Happy Friday Peepuls. Now before we all set our sights on Friday art parties and dancing and getting crazy and writing on people’s foreheads with markers, it’s time for us to get Debatified so we are all ready to vote. Obama is ahead in New York by like a hundred and five percent but apparently there are some states in the imperfect union where it is still a toss-up and people are just not sure who’s better. Moderator Candy Crowley scoured all of New York’s Long Island Tuesday and came up with only 82 people who still don’t know who they’re voting for – 12 of them polled just before airtime were also not sure who is on the one dollar bill, so there’s a clue for ya right there. Here’s a capsulized version of what went down.

Urban Folk Art® Studios is proud to re- present the work of Mark Bode, Dr.Revolt, and Stan 153. The first ‘It’s Alive ‘ Show in March of 2010 was the 2nd gallery opening UFA® studios presented, and has stood as the most well received. The show will include new works from Dr. Revolt, Mark Bode, Stan 153. Lets recap if anyone hasn’t been doing their graffiti history homework, Dr Revolt is one of the founding members of The Rolling Thunder Writers (RTW) and is infamous for taking over the 1 subway line with his signature graffiti style (and creator of the ‘Yo MTV Raps’ logo). Stan 153, who got his start on the corner of 153rd Street and Eight Avenue defined the landscape of Harlem in the dawn of graffiti history, the 1970’s. He has been documented in The Faith of Graffiti by Norman Mailer. Mark Bode, son of the legendary comic book artist Vaughn Bode, has developed a worldwide following for taking his family legacy and applying it to the comic and tattoo industries, and has currently been showing art, painting murals (tributes to his own and his father’s notorious comic characters such as Cheech Wizard), and keeping his bloodline’s legacy alive worldwide.

The show opens Oct 19th and will be up Through Nov 19th. Urban Folk Art® Gallery is located at 101 Smith Street in South Brooklyn

Urban Folk Art© is proud to present at their first anniversary celebration, the collected work of the gallery’s head curator and founder of the Urban Folk Art© Collective.
 

Adam Suerte, Founder of Urban Folk Art© Studios and the UFA© Gallery, as well as co founder of Brooklyn Tattoo® will show painting, printmaking, illustration, and some mixed media, and artfacts from his 11 year tattoo career. Most of Suerte’s work consists of urban styled imagery often directly depicting the surrounding neighborhoods he grew up in. Adam was born and raised in South Brooklyn in the late 60’s and 70’s. He wrote graffiti as a teenager, attended Music and Art High School, and earned a BFA in Illustration at Rhode Island School Of Design. He returned to Brooklyn in the early 90’s and co-founded the artist collective Urban Folk Art©. In the late 90’s he apprenticed tattooing as tattooing became legal in NY in ’97. By 2001 he co-founded Brooklyn Tattoo® with his current business partner Willie Paredes. In Jan 2011 they set up the most current physical manifestation of the collective next door to the Tattoo studio. This show celebrates the first year of Urban Folk Art© gallery’s effort to  bring emerging, established and legendary artists of all mediums and backgrounds into view through their venue. There will be a limited edition ‘year in review’ gallery guide to the past years artshows available the night of the opening as well as other tshirts and merch adam suerte has been known to create.

Urban Folk Art© Gallery is pleased to present the the art installation and book release celebration for Martha Cooper’s latest book ‘Tokyo Tattoo 1970’ by Dokument Press.
 
Martha Cooper will be exhibiting photos from her book, and Aiko, internationally renowned stencil artist will be displaying work inspired by Martha’s work directly related to the book. Martha Cooper is an American photographer best known for documenting the New York graffiti scene in the 70’s and 80’s. She started getting noticed for her personal work while working at the NY Post in the 70’s. The landmark book Subway Art published in 1984 which Cooper co-authored with Henry Chalfant is frequently credited as the catalyst and foundation for aerosol art movements worldwide. In the 70’s She was living in Tokyo with her anthropologist husband and became interested in Japanese tattooing after seeing a tattoo on display at a festival. She documented the tattoo Master Horibun I at work on clients as well as others involved in the tattooing scene there. She tried to publish these photos in the early 70’s but found that tattoong back then had an unsavory reputation, and no one was interested.
 
An original member of the art collective Faile, Aiko has been making art that has been shown and recognized internationally for many years. Aiko and Martha met in 2006,  and since then have traveled to Japan, Amsterdam and Berlin together on various projects, Aiko helped install Martha’s photos at the MOCA ‘Art in the Streets’ exhibit, as well as participated in the Carmichael gallery’s show “Remix” where artists made work inspired by Martha’s photos. Aiko’s piece was inspired by one of the photos in ‘Tokyo Tattoo 1970’. www.ladyaiko.com
 
In 2004 Martha met the guys at Dokument Press. Their magazine ‘Underground Productions’ was one of the first graffiti magazines in Europe. In 2008 Dokument press published Cooper’s ‘Tag Town’. Martha says: “Dokument has always been interested in publishing work about underground cultures, so the tattoo photos were a good fit for them.”

On choosing Urban Folk Art© Gallery for her book release, Martha says, “Aiko and I attended the Atlantic Avenue Art Walk last year and I was surprised to see a tattoo studio (Brooklyn Tattoo) and gallery with the name ‘Urban Folk Art©’ on the event map. So first of all, the name attracted me and I wanted to see what the place was. When I found out that there was a graffiti connection, I thought it would be the perfect place to launch my tattoo book”.

Urban Folk Art© Gallery presents “The Usual Suspects 2” an old school Graffiti Group Art Show

Brooklyn, NY- Urban Folk Art Gallery is pleased to announce their August show “the Usual Suspects 2”. Opening August 5th at 7pm, it will show a collection of Graffiti art created by artists who got their start writing graffiti in the 70’s and 80’s.

In an age where Graffiti is a widely accepted art form, used in everything from advertising to high fine art, most of the 13 artists showing began their artistic journeys in Brooklyn decades ago when Graffiti was an underground art movement started by disenfranchised youth. The artists include locally known as well as widely celebrated artists such as DANCE, REBEL, NEST, REK, SNATCH, KEO, POET, JAMES TOP, MOS ONE, BASIC, CHIEF, AND KC. These artists who began their Graffiti careers so long ago continue to help mold the contemporary Graffiti scene today. Some of the artists have been continuing to exhibit work far and wide, use their abilites for commercial and charitable ventures, and most of them continue to paint murals legal and otherwise. The First Usual Suspects show was held nearby a year ago, while the NYPD Vandal Squad was parked outside due to the notorious artists showing within.

Curated by Anthony Jehamy and Adam Suerte. Anthony and Adam grew up in the same South Brooklyn neighborhood, and began writing Graffiti as teenagers in the early 80’s. Anthony is still painting murals, curating Graffiti art shows, and working in photography. Adam is co owner of Brooklyn Tattoo®, and Urban Folk Art© studios/gallery where he tattoos, paints, curates, and works in many mediums and art realms.
Urban Folk Art© Gallery was opened in January, 2011, and shows many different disciplines, as well as different levels of undiscovered, emerging, and established artists. The type of work shown will be anything from comtemporary painting, drawing, printmaking and photography, to comic art, legendary Graffiti artists, and contemporary illustration.

“ The Usual Suspects 2” Art Show will take place at the Urban Folk Art© Gallery, 101 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201, and will be up until the end of August.
