Maya Hayuk at Cooper Cole (Toronto)

Street Artist, Fine Artist and Brooklyn resident Maya Hayuk has a solo show at the Cooper Cole Gallery in Toronto, Canada is now open to the general public. Ms. Hayuk paintings are saturated with color, catching the prism from the crystal and permuting it into a multitude of geometrically inspired patterns and shapes, realize on canvas and walls across the land. Crisply precise, or improvised and free wheeling, Hayuk let’s her mind and her palette run with enthusiasm for the raw creative spirit.

Brooklyn Busts Open Studio Doors for “GO” Courtesy Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum continues to plug into community and show love for the blossomed artists neighborhoods that are transforming Brooklyn into the true creative powerhouse rivaling Manhattan, which is looking so “last century” across the river. BAM is a loved museum that regularly gets “it” by bringing community in, thanks to the efforts of many, including the talented curatorial team headed by Sharon Matt Atkins who opens the conversation and knows how to listen to the beat on the street and make a huge institution relevant to a new generation.

This time Ms. Atkins and the museum’s Chief of Technology, Shelley Bernstein are taking  inspiration from the thousands of artists who work and live in Brooklyn, creating the largest open studios event we’ve heard of in DUMBO, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Greenpoint, Gowanus, and Red Hook this weekend. You can vote for your favorites by nominating three artists for inclusion in an exhibition at the museum. The museum’s curators then will visit the ten artists who received the most nominations and they will select two or more artists to have their work shown at the Brooklyn Museum for and Exhibition opening on December 1.

1735 artists have responded to this call. How many can you visit? You have this Saturday and Sunday to GO AND SEE ART.

Agnès b. is pleased to announce the opening of Public Display, a group exhibition curated by New York-based artistic team ASVP. The exhibition will feature printed works by nine international street artists; D*Face (London, UK), Faile (Brooklyn), Gaia (Baltimore), Hellbent (Brooklyn), Invader (Paris, FR), Miss Bugs (Bristol, UK), ND’A (Brooklyn), QRST (Brooklyn), and ASVP (New York).

Inspired by graffiti and street art, agnès b. has been taking pictures of artworks in the streets of her native Paris, Manhattan and Brooklyn for many years. This is how she first noticed works by ASVP and was intrigued and compelled to work with the duo. The exhibition will feature some well known names from the Street Art world as well as a number of up-and-coming artists that are showing strong promise with collectors and critics alike.

ASVP began working together in 2007. Since then, the team of two has created paintings, murals and poster art that has been displayed in major cities worldwide including: London, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Zürich, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Varanasi India, Florence Italy, Istanbul as well as New York City. The duo’s work often marries eastern and western imagery from multiple influences including retro advertising, pop and comic book culture, often mixed with bold typographic elements. The team’s dramatic multi-layered compositions regularly include bright tones of pop inspired color. In addition to curating Public Display, ASVP is currently collaborating with Agnès B. on an number of projects scheduled to release in 2013. ASVP was recently selected as one of only two emerging artists to be included in Doyle New York’s Inagural Street Art Auction scheduled for October 16th, 2012.

D*Face a.k.a Dean Stockton, grew up in London and had a childhood interest in graffiti. He credits this to Hanry Chalfant’s coverage of New York subway graffiti in Spraycan Art and Subway Art. His humorous and nihilistic work brings together the generation who don’t give a fuck. It fuses both traditional and contemporary graffiti, independent comic book art and good old-fashioned vandalism. D*Face is best-known for putting up hundreds of provocatively ‘defaced’ ten and twenty pound notes. Working with a variety of mediums and techniques, D*Face uses a family of dysfunctional characters to satirize and hold to ransom all that falls into their grasp a welcome jolt of subversion in today’s media-saturated environment. D*Face held his first major London solo exhibition, Death & Glory, at the Stolenspace gallery, followed by an exhibition at Eyecons, at O Contemporary in Brighton. In 2010, he collaborated with Christina Aguilera, on her album cover of Bionic.

FAILE is a Brooklyn-based artistic collaboration between Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller. Since its inception in 1999, FAILE is known for their pioneering use of wheatpasting and stenciling in the increasingly established arena of street art, and for their explorations of duality through a fragmented style of appropriation and collage. FAILE adapted its signature mass culture-driven iconography to a wide array of media. Their work has been included in numerous exhibitions around the world at the Museum Hetdomein, Sittard, Netherlands, TATE Modern, London, UK, Break Beat Science Showroom, Tokyo, Japan, NeurotitamHausSchwarzenberg, Berlin, Germany. Their works were also featured in numerous solo exhibitions at Perry Rubenstein Gallery, New York, NY, LilianBaylis School-Lazarides Gallery, London, UK, to name only a few.

Gaia currently lives in Baltimore and was born in 1988 in New York City. His name derives from the Greek designation for ‘earth
goddess’. He uses animal imagery to underscore his interest in bringing nature to the urban landscapes. A rising star in the street art community, his work can be found pasted from Brooklyn to Europe and back. According to the artist himself, much of his early work was inspired by a sense of looming environmental calamity. In 2011, he stated; “I want to express this strange un-locatable feeling of fear about the end of the world –
my generation’s zeitgeist of global warming.” He uses a very large scale to depict his subjects and always captures delicate emotion.

Hellbent is a Brooklyn based artist whose work has appeared on the streets of New York for over 7 years. His work has also appeared in major cities across the US and Europe. Although he works in various media (wheat paste, straight spray paint, rollers and stencils) he is predominately known for his hand carved drawings on panels of jawbones, skulls, and various animals ranging from attacking snakes and dogs to serene hummingbirds affixed to any wooden surface. These “plaques” as he calls them always include his signature stenciled floral backgrounds.

Invader is a French street artist who pastes characters from and inspired by the Space Invaders video game, made up of small colored square tiles that form a mosaic. He does this in cities across the world, then documents this as an “Invasion”, with books and maps of where to find each invader. Invader started this project in 1998 with the invasion of Paris – the city where he lives and the most invaded city to date – and then spread the invasion to 31 other cities in France. Cities around the globe now invaded with his colorful characters in mosaic tiles. Since 2000 Invader has shown in many galleries, art centers and museums, from the 6th Lyon contemporary art biennale (2001), the MAMA Gallery in Rotterdam (2002), at the Paris based Magda Danysz Gallery (2003), at the Borusan Center for Culture and Arts in Istanbul, Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles (2004).
In 2010, he was one of the featured artists in the Banksy film Exit Through the Gift Shop. In 2011, he took part in the exhibition “Art in the Streets” at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA curated by Jeffrey Deitch.

Miss Bugs is a creative U.K. street art partnership from Bristol. Formed in 2007, the duo is a working collaboration between Missum and Bug. Their part-photo collage, part-art statements are big, graphic and visually inspiring artworks and stunning limited edition prints, each hand finished by Miss Bugs with a wide range of materials including gold leaf, ink, aerosol and even magazine cuttings. Miss Bugs prints include dark and humorous themes, mixing religion with pornography and taking a swipe at the established art world (most recently Damien Hirst). They use iconic symbols such as Bugs Bunny, He-Man, Wonder Woman or King Kong re-mixed to represent a personal idea or cultural stance. Miss Bugs is well known within the street art scene and with recent exhibitions in New York at the Brooklyn Nite Gallery in 2011 and at ink-d Gallery in Brighton, UK they are a creative force turning street art on it’s head.

ND’A is a Portland native turned NYC illustrator hit the streets running with a strong and unique style. His heavy-handed brush work and comical characters nestle within many of the forgotten grooves of Brooklyn. Unlike the typical graffiti characters found on the street, his work is like a troubled second cousin. One can’t help but be fascinated and slightly repulsed. Not to say they are grotesque but that they are grotesque, as the word was originally intended to be used.

QRST creates oil paintings and hand-made prints depicting the strange environments and subjects he imagines, and while working out his ideas,
he often makes wheatpastes to further inspire himself and share his process with the public. QRST’s public work often includes unusual hand-drawn illustrations of playfully tussling rat fights, wide eyed cats, and frumpy birds along with his series of everyday people (sometimes with wings).

“See No Evil” in Bristol Brings Thousands to the Streets

Basking in the warm glow of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, the “See No Evil” festival unabashedly celebrated Street Art in Bristol with thousands of fans thronging through the street while London was scurrying to deal with the threat of the unofficial Street Art of the Olympic kind.

In its second year, the one-week festival invited about 40 Street Artists from around the globe to hit up the walls of one long street while visitors traveled great distances to watch. In yet another sign of the full emergence of this first global art form, people witnessed live painting day and night, took photos, visited pop up galleries, attended graffiti workshops, danced to live music on six stages, and ate huge mountains of food at what organizers called a “New York Style” block party.

On the map for the Street Art scene since the early 1980s, Bristol was known for its own style then, eventually giving rise to some of todays’ better known names. With this expansive celebration initiated by locally raised graffiti star Inkie, many styles from the worldwide scenes of graffiti and Street Art exist alongside one another in this grand thoroughfare. Notably only 3 of last years 72 or so works survived into this year (by Nick Walker, Aryz and El Mac), suggesting a very slim chance that many of these new pieces will last for long, but few seemed to mind this month.

The 2012 crop includes painters from Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Poland, Austria, and across the UK who used an estimated 3,500 cans of aerosol to collectively create a massive gallery of public art. With roots in what was once strictly illegal, it’s mind-bending to imagine how occasionally even a police officer or mayor has been photographed proudly adding to the artworks at festivals like these. Within the space of one small decade or so, the appreciation for this form of expression has skyrocketed and in fact this month thousands in Bristol are seeing no evil in it.

Lazarides Gallery Presents: “Klimt Illustrated” (London, UK)

Klimt Illustrated

Nine internationally-renowned street artists will produce Klimt-inspired masterpieces in front of a live audience in London’s Grosvenor Gardens, on Tuesday 21st August.

Situated upon plinths, the artists will create new works resonant with the influence of Klimt in the square format,as part of the Vienna Tourist Board’s campaign to celebrate the 150th birthday of the famous Viennese artist. Inspired by Vienna’s rich cultural diversity, the unique celebration aims to showcase the city’s modern art scene and imperial heritage.

The completed works work will be displayed in the famous Lazarides Gallery in Soho as a public exhibition, ‘Klimt Illustrated’.

The exhibition at the Lazarides Gallery will be free and open to the general public from 24th August to 1st September, Tuesday to Saturday 11am – 7pm.

The Vienna Tourist Board has worked with the Lazarides Gallery and curator, Sydney Ogidan of BLK River, to secure the nine artists, who are: Mode 2 www.mode2.org; Lucy McLauchlan www.beat13.co.uk; Vhils www.alexandrefarto.com; Ron English www.popaganda.com; Christian Eisenberger www.van.at/see/eisen; Bastardilla www.bastardilla.org; Know Hope www.thisislimbo.com; Marlene Hausegger www.mmhhh.com; Work will also be on display from Shepard Fairey www.obeygiant.com, the famous American contemporary street artist and illustrator.

Graffitimundo is proud to present “The Talking Walls of Buenos Aires”. Opening September 6th at Londonewcastle Project Space, the exhibition explores Argentina’s unique culture of urban art.

Urban art in Buenos Aires reflects the city’s turbulent history and rich cultural heritage. Throughout the last century the city walls have been extensively painted, by artists, activists, political groups and the public, making the city walls of Buenos Aires an established and dynamic channel for expression.

During the last two decades several different artistic styles have developed. The devastating Argentine economic crisis of 2001 created a generation of young artists determined to take to the streets and reclaim their city. As they collaborated in a spirit of solidarity a new and distinctive visual language began to emerge.

“The Talking Walls of Buenos Aires” features mural art and original artworks from leading Argentine artists and art collectives, as well as video works and historical and contemporary photography portraying the urban landscape of Buenos Aires and seminal moments in the country’s history.

The exhibition celebrates a form of expression rooted in activism and a desire to transform public space, and in the process challenges conventional views on what graffiti is, what street art represents, who creates it, and why.

Five of the paintings are detailed close-ups of derelict houses in the artist’s resident town of Detroit, and a further five feature “old school” graffiti overlaid with colour fields in the style of late abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko.

“Rothko talked about wrestling with opposing and competing elements to eventually discover an equilibrium, what he called a pocket of silence” says BORF. “For this show I was fighting through layers of ambivalence and opposites: graffiti as youth expression and Rothko as adult expression; the art market and property rights; education and improvisation, youth and adulthood.”

Détournement, Carlo McCormick at Jonathan Levine (NYC)

Carlo McCormick, Paper Magazine Senior Editor and NYC cultural intuitor, is guest curator at the Jonathan Levine Gallery with a show titled “Détournement: Signs of the Times” Carlo has assembled an interesting list of artists to tell his story with the works of AIKO, Dan Witz, David Wojnarowicz, Dylan Egon, Eine, Ilona Granet, Jack Pierson, John Law (Jack Napier), Leo Fitzpatrick, Mark Flood, Martin Wong, Max Rippon (RIPO), Mike Osterhout, Posterboy, Ron English, Shepard Fairey + Jamie Reid, Steve Powers (ESPO), TrustoCorp, Will Boone and Zevs.

Mining a vein that has been here in front of us all the time, the composition of the selected works reveals a powerful undertone about how we engage and communicate with our artwork, and hi-jack the messaging of others. Says McCormick, “We do not need to follow these signs, we need to make our own so as to find a way out of the mess we are in.”

It’s also one of the few shows that seamlessly blends Street Art and non-street art practices without needing to draw a distinction for its own sake. This show is now open to the public.

Chris Stain and Joe Iurato at Mighty Tanaka (BKLN)

Tonight at Mighty Tanaka Gallery in DUMBO the inevitable pairing of Street Artists Chris Stain and Joe Iurato finally takes place. With a show titled “Deep in the Cut” these two stencil artists will bring the knives out for the love of art and the perfection of their craft. Style and mannerism distinguish the differences between these two, and Stain has been at it much longer with a lot of work on the street, but metaphor and empathy to the human condition is the overlap in these guys work. Grab the F train to DUMBO and come see what new common ground emerges from this combination.

Peeta Solo at ArTicks (Amsterdam)

Italian Graffiti and Fine Artist Peeta has been writing his tag on walls, trains and many other surfaces since 1993. Like a few of his generation who have been stretching graff style past it’s outer limits and morphing it with abstraction, his work has slowing gelled into it’s own distinctive style. He focuses his lettering and his tag by feeding it through Chinese and Islamic calligraphy as a departure from the traditional Latin and Greek lettering. A collaborator of New Yorks RWK collective, he resides in Venice and tonight opens his solo show in Amsterdam at the ArTicks Gallery.

“You & Me” – Low Brow’s Second Group Show (BKLN)

The Low Brow Artique Gallery in Brooklyn has decided to enter the matchmaking business and Saturday their second show titled “You & Me” artfully combines the work of two at a time. While many of these artists have worked collaboratively on the street in the past, crossing freely between sanctioned and unsanctioned Street Art and graffiti, the results of merging their styles and techniques always creates new creatures with the combined DNA. Sometimes it’s a mutt, and sometimes it is purebred brilliance. Artistic couplings here include: Cash4 & Smells, Chris & Veng (RWK), EKG & Dark Clouds, Matt Siren & Fenix, OCMC & This Is Awkward, Royce Bannon & Russell King, and Veng & Sofia Maldonado.

Miss Van at Copro Gallery “Wild at Heart” (Santa Monica)

Miss Van, the French Street Artist and fine artist has a new solo show “Wild at Heart” in Santa Monica, California this Saturday at the Copro Gallery and the ladies are again strutting their stuff across her rich canvasses. Painting since the age of 18 Miss Van has chosen her appearances carefully while being very active within the smaller pool of female Street Artists, maintaining a continous presence with her unique doll-characters, a rich color palette and plenty of erotica.

Master Graffiti Artist and fine artist Leonard “FUTURA” is touring the country to promote this project with a spirit maker and this Friday he will stop in Richmond, Virgina where he will paint live on a canvas inside the ABC Store located at 101 North Thompson Street. Red Gallery Presents: Part2ism “New Horizons & Future Love Songs” (London, UK)

Red Gallery proudly present Part2ism’s first solo exhibition in London since Artillery for Pleasure 2009. This new body of work is perhaps his most outlandish work in a quartz-century journey using aerosol and a vast range of different media. New Horizons and Future Love Songs explores the relationship of sight and sound as one medium. In his series of polychromatic sculptural reliefs entitled ‘Architect-sonics’, wooden planes of color appear to slice through time placing our idea of transit art in another realm. Further works on show investigate aerosol paint as a raw medium exploring vectors as pure line and color but also the use of spatialization and surface data to interpret visual noise over large sheets of canvas. An exhibition that strips away the non essential elements and at the same time takes fundamental ideas to the absolute pinnacle.
“A syncretist at heart and now a synaesthesiac in practice, Part2ism is a multi-talented creator, exploring where his interests and instincts lead him. Beyond all the “isms’ that can be applied to his work over the past twenty eight years, whether of his own invention or culled from art history, Part2ism has always aligned himself with his own visions first. As an artist, he subsumes all categories and at the same time defies them. More importantly than these post-creation categories that can be applied to his body of work, the underlying and unifying threads in Part2ism’s history are DIY individualism, a revolutionary mentality and a consistent exploration of mind-challenging aesthetics. His timbre, his voice, his style is a constantly mutating, gene-splicing hybridism embodying rebellion and progression.
With this cross pollination throughout the full spectrum of his creative output, Part2ism has reached an apex of compression and connection of his lifetime of aesthetic explorations in different disciplines, utilizing everything that he has accomplished over the past twenty-eight years, in a sensurround of synaesthesia and synchronicity”. “In 1991, three intoxicated and disgruntled teenagers went out to take on the biggest graffiti crew in Copenhagen. Adopting the name MOA (Monsters of Art) the aim was to become the most recognized graffiti crew in the world…”
Now, over twenty years later, MOA is one of the most notorious graffiti crews and still hold the top spot for train ‘bombing’ in Denmark. Forever growing and expanding the fight for MOA global domination is far from over. This one-off exhibition will explore the crew’s unique codes and conducts that have, over the years, set them world’s apart from all other graffiti crews. Many crews have challenged their position but none have succeeded, proving that MOA really are the kings of unparalled artistry and skill. Since their arrival onto the scene MOA has been off-limits, only giving selected interviews and infrequent comments to certain publications. We are delighted and highly privileged to show a one-off exhibition looking back at MOA’s 21-year rein on the graffiti world.The exhibition will include original works, screenprints and photographic documentation.

OS Gemeos Solo at ICA Boston

The first USA solo exhibition of Os Gemeos enjoys it’s first opening weekend at ICA Boston and you can see the first piece before you even enter the museum because they have just completed a large outdoor piece on a ventilation building over the Big Dig. The Brazilian Twins began their artistic career since 1987 doing graffiti and and have been painting all manner of imaginative pieces and murals non-stop on the streets of the world ever since. Along the way they have garnered the respect of their peers and thousands of art fans across all continents.

Portraitist Faring Purth spent a year or so traveling from city to city last year finding abandoned places to mount giant faces, full of character. “I will be sharing a body of work I’ve been preparing since my return from that insane journey last year and I will be taking over their entire space with pieces scaling from 10′ x 12′ to 3 “x 5”.

“This Snow Rising” opens at the Anno Domini Gallery San Jose today.

In December 2010 a group of artists got together to embark on a project painting London’s skyline, with the aim of inspiring people and reminding them of their voice. At a time where communities across the country feel increasingly neglected and let down by the system they decided to use the roofs of the many council blocks scattered across the city as a platform to communicate with people in the form of painted eyes and up-lifting slogans that beamed down on to the streets below. Their work was to serve as a reminder to the public that they still have control over their surroundings and although we live in the most surveyed city on the planet, where peoples liberties are often compromised for financial gain and control, there is still room to take risks, think outside the box and change the world around you.

This exhibition will see the launch of a limited edition hand bound artist book from ATG. Each book will be signed and numbered with a hand screen printed cover.

The exhibition will also feature limited edition screen prints, originals and photographic work. .
