The brightest international talent emerging from street art takes over both The Outsiders galleries simultaneously this November for a tour de force exhibition, Unslung Heroes.
For his all-new show, Anthony Lister – consistently described as “Australia’s best contemporary artist” – has used his sketchbook featuring portraits of hip hedonistic revellers, drawn at revels he’s attended, for inspiration. The elegant and sophisticated figures in the paintings – also dubbed the ‘Party Life Series’ – may be a contrast to the obnoxiously intoxicated international youth of today. But this is exemplary of the artist’s most consistent theme: “I try to combine the highbrow and lowbrow,” says Lister, “creating analogies which allow the viewer to feel comfortable with subjects that maybe they’ve made snap judgements on before.”
On a surface level the content of Unslung Heroes marks a departure for Lister. The artist’s past trademark has been paintings of super-powered ‘grey paladin’ characters indulging in louche behaviour, more inclined to shoot laser beams from their sexual organs than their eyes or gauntlets. “The super-heroes I always described as ‘mis- guiding role models’. Well, the characters in Unslung Heroes are the products of those bad role models. Also this whole show is about people without super-powers who influence us. Super-heroes are just people in costumes after all.”
Red, black and white dictate the palette of the entire show. Across both galleries the exhibition features several large canvases at 180cm square and a wide range of mid- sized canvases at 90cm square. These are painted using charcoal, acrylic, spray paint and oils. The rare grey shades employ the neutral ‘buffing’ paste used to delete graffiti by local authorities, “stolen from the council out of necessity” says Lister. The canvases are supplemented by miniature drawings on lined notepaper using felt pen and Tippex correction fluid. “When I started making the sketches, red and black pens – plus Tippex, which I’ve always worked with – were all I had to hand. A lot of the time when I’m travelling I’ll be alone and I’ll have to meet people. Sketching them helps for that. Plus it stops me drawing all over the tables and walls.”
Sculptural installations made on site will provide an immersive experience, including a grand piano in the style of a Picasso painting, a statue of Lister’s great-grandfather cut from packing foam using hot wire, and a bronze bust of his errant uncle. “My references to my family are also on the theme of role models,” says Lister. “You can choose your role models but you can’t choose your family. Apparently my great-grandfather was respected and established. My uncle though, he’s not right. It’s about detachment and influence. I imagine all these people in the paintings have uncles… and great- grandfathers.”
This is the first time both Outsiders exhibition spaces have been given over to one artist since David Choe’s UK debut in 2008. Get under the influence of Anthony Lister’s intoxicating artwork at Unslung Heroes this autumn.
About the artist
33 year-old Anthony Lister is hailed as the most compelling artistic talent coming out of Australia today. He has exhibited internationally to considerable acclaim, and been featured in Art Collector’s 50 Most Collectable Australian Artists. His 2007 painting Spider Woman recently sold at Lawson-Menzies auction house for just under AU$20,000, a personal record.
Anthony began his artistic career painting “awful” (in his own words) graffiti graduating to abstract landscapes on electricity junction boxes. A prolific worker he exhibits several times a year, consistently at Miami’s Art Basle festival. His most recent show in his home country took over an abandoned brothel, and an eponymous show earlier in 2012 in California featured ballerinas in group sex with dingoes.
The Outsiders Newcastle invite you to join us on the evening of Thursday 23rd August at the opening party for ‘Walls Are Two-Sided‘, the new solo exhibition by young American artist BORF. The event takes place from 6 ’til 9pm in the gallery at 77 Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The most critically lauded young talent in urban art, BORF (AKA John Tsombikos) returns to The Outsiders Newcastle gallery. An exhibition exploring conflict, serenity and contradiction, Walls are Two-Sided features ten large canvases. All feature the artist’s charm, sensitivity and humour underlaid with yearning idealism and quiet but passionate anger. Five of the paintings are detailed close-ups of derelict houses in the artist’s resident town of Detroit, and a further five feature “old school” graffiti overlaid with colour fields in the style of late abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko.
“Rothko talked about wrestling with opposing and competing elements to eventually discover an equilibrium, what he called a pocket of silence” says BORF. “For this show I was fighting through layers of ambivalence and opposites: graffiti as youth expression and Rothko as adult expression; the art market and property rights; education and improvisation, youth and adulthood.”

Logan is recognised throughout the art world as a pioneer in stencil art, creating photorealistic paintings of urban landscapes in meticulous detail, from layers upon layers of painstakingly cut stencils. Logan states the concept behind his work focusing on city architecture, is his fascination with the idea that hidden between city walls and alleyways are millions of stories and secrets from all the people who have lived and walked these areas before, “my work reflects on the events that have come before me”.
In addition to the stencil works in the exhibition, Logan will be showing a body of photographs taken over the past 5 years, giving the viewer an rare insight into life beneath cities of America and Europe!

This July The Outsiders Newcastle will host the first ever solo exhibition by distinctive Los Angeles street artist Morley, ‘I Don’t Make Sense Without You’.
Morley’s touching, inspirational and sometimes romantic slogan art has cheered up LA’s notoriously jaded population for almost two years now. His first major gallery exhibition will feature canvases, mixed media and sculptural works inspired by his most popular slogans, three-dimensional pieces in the form of elaborate ‘keepsake boxes’ made from found materials, and affordable, low-edition prints.
A “dreamer” originally from the quiet US state of Iowa, Morley began vandalising while at college in New York. “It wasn’t until I moved to New York that I got my first taste of street art,” he says. “While I was familiar with traditional graffiti, deep down I think I felt like a middle class white kid from the Iowa wouldn’t be able to muster the street cred needed to appreciate it. Street art seemed a bit more inclusive, had fewer established rules and aimed its messages at a more mainstream audience. Finding myself surrounded daily by a sea of anonymous strangers, each seeming to carry their own unique burden, left me with a desire to communicate some sort of message of hope. I started silk screening what I would later identify as ‘slogans’ onto Contact paper and sticking them around subway stations.
“Moving to Los Angeles made my mission a little more personal. Like most college graduates, I found myself confronted by the harsh reality that perhaps the future I had planned for myself wouldn’t stick to the blueprints.
“Los Angeles has an interesting populace. Dreamers, waiting patiently for their big break mingle with struggling immigrants, directionless children of privilege, and those too burnt out to remember why they moved out here in the first place. For me, the difference between LA and New York was that now I was truly one of them, not just observing from behind the protective shield of higher education.
“I also began including drawings of me because I wanted my audience to know who it was that was writing to them. Rather than a disembodied voice, I wanted them to see the words as coming from a kindred spirit and a comrade in arms. It took a while for me to convince myself that my words might have value as street art. Later I discovered that it was precisely what I was insecure about that set me apart from other artists. At first, black and white words on a page seemed too simple to be of any real value to anyone. What I had forgotten was that from a car driving 30 miles-an-hour down a city street, it’s difficult to retain much else.”
Post-postmodernism for the people, Morley’s work is touching, empowering and very refreshing. ‘I Don’t Make Sense Without You’ is the feel good show of the Summer.

The Outsiders Newcastle invite you to join us on the evening of Thursday 20th October to celebrate the opening of ‘See Something, Say Something‘, the debut UK solo exhibition from young American artist BORF. The event takes place in the gallery at 77 Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, from 6 ’til 9pm.
BORF is one of the brightest young talents in art. Heʼs an angry young man in the finest tradition but his refreshing work makes insurrection delectable.
Formerly a notorious Washington DC graffiti artist, 24 year-old BORF gracefully dodges street art clichés in his gallery shows. He favours watercolours, oil sticks, drawings, sculpture, photography and film over stencils and spray paint. Whereas BORFʼs subject matter is pitiful and angry, his manner is melancholic and idealistic. Rebellion has a romance once more.
‘See Something, Say Something‘ continues the theme of impassioned revolution against a crumbling status quo. In the city we find abstracted commuters opposite transgressive kids: the former are trying to make a living, the latter trying to live.
