Our weekly focus on the moving image and art in the streets. And other oddities.

1. Icy & Sot “Art Pollution”
2. Stikki Peaches and Fashionable Storm Troopers
3. Shift & Shine. How to pimp your ride in Barcelona
4. Japanther x Droid “DO IT (don’t try it)”
4b. “Subterranean Homesick Blues” Bob Dylan
5. Alice Pasquini in Tuffelo, Rome

BSA Special Feature: Icy & Sot “Art Pollution”

A short lively exposure to the brothers who have been cutting stencils and hopping roofs around the neighborhood lately, this new video follows Icy & Sot as they explore new and well run territory and put their own stamp on this moment.

Stikki Peaches and Fashionable Storm Troopers

A one minute short of Stikki Peaches wheatpasting the helmeted and fashionable storm troopers that you are now beginning to associate with the name.

Shift & Shine. How to pimp your ride in Barcelona

A D.I.Y. take on giving your bike a facelift with stuff bought at a flea market. Upgrade!

Japanther x Droid “DO IT (don’t try it)”

To promote the upcoming release by Japanther, it looks like Droid had a hand at multiple sticker slaps. Sort of recalls Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues. This one features live hand drawing of all the lyrics on stickers that are then taken out into the street. See all the proper credits for this fine work on the Vimeo page.

Possibly the very first rap video, here’s Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues” from 1965 with camera work by Bob Neuwirth and directed by D.A. Pennebaker. (Alan Ginsberg hangs out in the back)

Alice Pasquini in Tuffelo, Rome

Ever wonder what street life is like when you are painting your piece? It’s not quiet, if that is what you imagined. Every Tomazio, Shanequa, and Akim seems to come out of the woodwork to ask questions, discuss, and as you can see here, offer opinions. We always say that Street Art and public art and graffiti are all part of a conversation in the street, and here’s some evidence of that in Rome.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2014

Our piece on the visiting guests from Afghanistan got a lot of attention this week, as well as the Kiev sculpture by Roti, perhaps because of the ongoing powder keg in Ukraine. It is as if global interest in the power of art to affect change is in the air — we feel like we can sense a new sort of activism afoot. Or should we say #ACTIVISM ?

Meanwhile the small idiosyncratic hand-made pieces are starting to show up again in New York after a relative quiet that was enforced by the cold and snow, which both have melted. Oh, wait, another storm is coming tonight. (!) If we find that ground hog he is going to get a smack.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Ainac, DOA, EC13, Geppetto, Lambros, Mr. Toll, Olek, Richard Serra, and Tripel.

As admirers of this modern master sculptor we were treated to this sight on Manhattan streets. Usually you can only appreciate his work under heavy scrutiny from security guards, and probably no photos are allowed. So to see these sculptures on the streets and in transportation was what you call a New York Minute. Not exactly Street Art but definitely art on the street. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

SpiderTag, Nails, and Abstract Geometry in Madrid (VIDEO)

SpiderTag, Nails, and Abstract Geometry in Madrid (VIDEO)

Madrid-based Street Artist Spidertag is one of the new crop of young artists using yarn in their work; a genuine departure from aerosol and wheatpaste that once was an anomaly is now widespread enough to call a trend. Let’s call it New Folk Street Art – at least until next week when someone coins another term.

He’s done his share of aerosol bombing, but perhaps because one of his first loves was sculpture, Spidertag was looking for a new way to do interventions back in 2008. Coupled with an interest in abstract and geometrical design he began to experiment with materials that he could physically manipulate to sharpen shapes… and to interact with.

Pounding nails into walls of abandoned buildings (and many other surfaces) was very satisfying and he began constructing and defining spaces with yarn around the iron post constellations. It was a good way to study in geometry and space and one that he continues to experiment with . After discovering the abstract geometrics and symbol-based work of fellow Street Artist and urban interventionist EC13, Spidertag knew he had found a kindred spirit to work with to call out, create and define spacial and planular dimensions in the man-made and natural environment.

Today we look at community garden space Spidertag was drawn strongly to in downtown Madrid in the neighborhood of Lavapies, and the squatted garden called Solarpiés. “This is an abandoned place in the city center that was squatted by local people. Like many empty lots I saw in New York, people in my area have converted it into a free urban garden,” he says.

Brooklyn Street Art: You have done installations in abandoned places with nails and yarn previously. What characteristics are you looking for when selecting your next wall?
Spidertag: The location is almost everything to me. I look for special places that inspire me. That´s what I think Street Art is all about.

Brooklyn Street Art: You speak about a new minimalism in your work – Does this refer to the amount of empty space that complements the occupied space?
Spidertag: More or less, yes. It´s about being more simple in the creation and composition. With this artwork, I think that I have started a new era for my work. What I´m doing now is more like the red parts of my piece; less of the green….

Brooklyn Street Art: Who are some of your favorite artists whose work influences this direction for you?
Spidertag: More than being influenced by other artists I would say I was more influenced by my collaborations with other street artists, especially EC13 that have brought me to this place.

The Golden Age of Street Art in Barcelona – now on FB

The Golden Age of Street Art in Barcelona – now on FB

Every Street Art scene has what it calls its “Golden Age” – that time when artists are just popping up new pieces every week and you can sense a real evolution in style and substance is happening before your eyes. For Barcelona many will tell you that they had a golden age during the first four years of the century when it felt like walls all over some areas of the city became a vibrant unbridled gallery and the Spanish city became a tourist destination for artists and fans alike. While there is still a scene there now, much of the areas have been developed for commercial and shopping escapades for visitors rather than urban exploration.

“BCN Walls Project” is the brainchild of Daniel Narváez, who recently contacted us to tell us about his project of posting images from 2000 to 2007 during his golden age of graffiti in Barcelona.  We took a look at the Facebook page and were pleased to see some images of artwork that recall our own beginnings recording the turn of the century Street Art explosion that began in Brooklyn and New York at large at that time. No telling how his page will develop, but its worth a look to see what else Narváez will be pulling out of his archives.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2014

Great week in NYC with the new mayor shaking hands for hours in the cold outside City Hall with all New Yorkers last Sunday, then we got smacked with the devastating cold, then sleet, then high winds. Next up, ice locusts! Also, if your Christmas tree is still up, don’t plug it in because that puppy will go up in 25 seconds of flaming glory. Wait until it is safely on the street before igniting.

This week we also featured not one but two yarn artists, which has gotta be a first for us – London Kaye and the Olek. Yarn on the street isn’t exactly a trend, but it is sort of a trend.

– In a related story, Olek is now reporting that the piece we documented her installing in 4 degree temperatures has mysteriously disappeared. Street Art vanishes all the time but the size of this piece was gargantuan and it was a complicated install and it was hung in a very heavily traversed part of Little Italy. Says Olek in her FB/Twitter all-points-bulletin “Alert: 376 square feet of #crochet art stolen.” Keep your eye on Grandma, also Aunt Betty. ‘Cause you know, knitters sometimes get competitive, that’s all I’m saying.

And here we are with our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Beau Stanton, EC13, Etnik, Haculla, Icy & Sot, Miron Milic, Olek, Pyramid Oracle, Rene Gagnon, Seville, Sexer, Steep, Swoon, Team Low Brow, Team Mishka, and Zimad.

Alice Pasquini on the Streets of Madrid

As December rolls into a slow coast toward the New Year, street artist Alice Pasquini met some new fans in the small and quiet neighborhoods and in one commercial district of this Spanish city last week. No festivals, no curated installations, no gallery openings – just the opportunity to bring to life a wall that you previously walked by without notice.

“I was just in Madrid these past few days to visit with old friends and paint,” she says. Somehow she managed to not be distracted the 6,000 Santa Claus runners in the street Saturday.

It’s December yo! The tree is getting lit this week for the tourists and New York art folk are headed to Miami for the ever-more-air-kissed Basel. We’re still recovering from Thanksgivikkuh and looking on the street to find the latest pieces that went up before winter descended.  Right now we’re tallying up the list of best real street art images of 2013 – feel free to write us with your favorite pieces.

Here is our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Blu Key, Elbow-Toe, Pastey Whyte, Phuze, Rones, Swoon, Ting Tong Chang, and WishBe.

“The Manila Galleons were the Spanish trading ships that sailed once or twice per year between Europe, New Spain (Mexico), the Spanish East Indies (Philippines), and China. The trading route was inaugurated in 1565 with the establishment of the ocean passage with the Far East, and continued until the Mexico War of independence in 1815. The 250 years of galleon trade constructed a world map of early globalization, where Europe, America and Asia were linked with silver, slavery, piracy and luxury goods.

Taking the trading route as a point of departure, my intention is to create a series of street art in several locations: Spain, England and China. These images will create a narrative about globalization. Last month, I had been to Spain and carried out the first part of this project.”  Ting Tong Chang

ROA Gets Up With New Animals In Tow

ROA Gets Up With New Animals In Tow

BSA travels with ROA to Austria, Canada, Great Britain, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the US.

Today we visit with Street Artist, urban naturalist, and globe trotter ROA to see what walls he has been climbing since we last checked in with him and his traveling curious circus of animals. Alternating between the cuddly and the killing, the endoskelton and the excrement, the pugnacious, playful and the putrefying, this Belgian world citizen is no romantic with his subjects and he isn’t asking for you to be either necessarily.

If you consider the brutal natural and man-made world that animals have to survive in and the ruthless depravity of humans throughout the ages (including right now), perhaps ROA’s depictions of these regionally based creatures are a healthy counterbalance to the fictional storytelling we customarily see in large public depictions of animals. Rotting Big Bird, anyone?

ROA. Lagos, Portugal 2013. (photo © Roa)

In one instructive example, a local town meeting in Chichester in Great Britain erupted into a heated debate this spring and a vote was called over whether to remove one of ROA’s fresh paintings from public view. The aerosoled portrait  featured a rotting badger lying belly up and pock-marked across the front of a neglected building.

“It’s not appropriate, it’s grotesque and I hope it will be removed,” said the district and parish councilor who was outraged at the factual representation of a dying animal, according to a local website. The article does not mention if she was equally outraged at the culling of badgers locally, which ROA was drawing attention to, or if she would call the culling of undesirable animals “grotesque”.

You wouldn’t cheapen the spray-painted monochromatic realism of ROAs work as activism per se, or even moralizing. Sometimes a bear is just a bear.

But sometimes the poses and positions and selectively illustrated details are more pronounced than one may see in nature, so clearly his desire is to draw attention to them. And why not try to give a voice to them? Otters don’t do email and bison hooves are too clunky for texting and nary a narwhal has his own Facebook page. If they have been displaced, marginalized, or are suffering, you won’t see a cluster of clamoring squirrels arrayed before a bank of microphones and cameras issuing a press conference.

But slowly and gradually and almost systematically the former graffiti artist has been raising the awareness of even the dullest among us bipedal primates that the animals we are sharing the world with are plausibly pissed about that whole “dominion over nature” clause that pious Pulcinellas spout when justifying treating some animals like trash even while their blue-blooded poodles are having pedicures. Now that you think of it, this may not be exclusively about the animal kingdom.

Certainly we have all learned from ROAs travels that nature isn’t pretty – and can possibly be very alarming – and he won’t likely let you forget it.

So start trotting, galloping, swimming, scurrying, slithering, and scurrying! We have a lot of catching up to do with ROA as this year he’s been in Austria, Canada, Great Britain, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the US.

This wall was featured in our coverage this summer of the MURAL festival, where we wrote;

“For his first visit to Montreal, the Belgian Street Artist named ROA says that he had a great time creating this ‘still life’ with a bison and a bear. When talking about his inspiration, ROA says that he was impressed with the history of the so-called American bison, which was incredibly abundant in the early 19th century, numbering more than 40 million. After being hunted almost into extinction with a population of 200 a century later, the bison slowly have reestablished their numbers in Canada to 700,000. He decided to add a bear laying on top because it tells a similar story of a native mammal in the region.”

“This is the first time I actually painted a narwhal,” says ROA about the curiously speared whale that lives year-round in the Arctic.

“Their tusks make them a unique example of a species; in a way the narwhal is a mythical sea creature; The unicorns of the sea,” explains ROA about this Swedish piece.  “The young male narwal that I painted here is unfortunately caught in a fishing line. I wanted to draw attention to how they and many other species become a victim of hunting and pollution.”

Here is the painting referred to above that upset a number of people in Chichester and called for a vote to take it down (it was 50/50 so they’ve left it up).

Regarding the Badger Cull 2013

“After several emails from Louise Matthews about the upcoming badger cull in GB, I painted a badger to support their efforts to save the badgers,” says ROA. The controversial practice in Britain has gained a number of very adamant foes, including Brian May from the rock group Queen.

Regarding the dog above, ROA says :

” It took me a detailed search into the Dulwich Picture Gallery to find an animal expression that was involved with the daily life of the time and express on it’s own a fragment of the ordinary life. My eye was caught by a pooping dog in a large scale hunting scene; I found that an interesting detail. The people of the museum told me they have more hunting scenes with this same curious detail, but those were currently not exhibited.”

JC2 “City of Ether”

From Spain Jeice2 has just completed a ghostly painting on the side of an abandoned and damaged building and he sends us some images of it, including a cleverly photoshopped obscuring of himself in the lower corner.  In the face of usually bold and saturated graphic Street Art that one often sees today, this one nearly fades into the mottled and worn facade of the weathered building it is on. The disembodied head looks down, perhaps from a mountain, at the metropolis down below in a valley; a “City of Ether” that is as ephemeral as the painting itself.
