The artist known as TRXTR, in his second solo show at Signal Gallery finds himself looking at a world gone mad with excess. For him the problem is that ‘in every way the Genie is out of the bottle and has become so bloated and addictive there is no way it will go back and our wishes are all used up’.
We are delighted to announce that Matthew Small and Fran Williams will be showing their work together for the first time in a two-man show at the gallery. The show called ‘The Way We Were’ finds the two artists in top form, producing powerful works in their distinctively intense styles. Both artists have largely concentrated on portraiture as their main stylistic medium. There is also an underlying melancholy and soulfulness in both their works, which sits very well together, even though the technical means of achieving this atmosphere is quite different.

2 + 2 = four very talented and contrasting artists and styles. Two being stencil artists alongside two more traditional painters. Also two of the group are well known to fans of the gallery, while the other two are new. As normal, we curate our group shows to demonstrate the range of work that we show, as well as breaking down the barriers between artistic labels such as ‘Urban,’ ‘Street,’ and ‘Fine’ art. We have given the artists a free reign to produce work that is currently exciting them and the result will be a dynamic mix of ideas, techniques and approaches.
Introducing the up and coming street artist RAE, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. This will be his first show in London. The artists says:
‘Nocturnal Trips’ means everything and nothing about how art relates to my existence. In a literal sense, it deals with the the “trips” I take to install the work I put up on the streets at night and how the city seems a lot different when your scheming as opposed to getting a latte.
Dale Grimshaw
Dale Grimshaw is a dynamic artist calling on powerful emotions and strongly held belief to fuel his creative output. This tumultuous energy has produced a marvelous series of paintings over the past five years – works that have often been highly personal, but because of their directness and honesty, have succeeded in resonating with very many people.
In his new show, ‘Moreish’ Dale is deeply concerned by the increasingly desperate dance of excess that he sees so many of us jig along to. As the artist says ‘It’s a case of enough is never enough. The ‘haves’ want more and the ‘have nots’ can pay for it. Once we get that acquisitive taste, we just want more and more’.
The response from the artist to this view of the world is ironically seductive. Succulent cakes, fruit, meat, chocolate and cream are piled on top of each other in an orgy of visual sensations. The works themselves have a disturbingly ‘Moreish’ appeal and despite the artist’s displeasure at a world where ‘some people don’t have a pot to piss in, while others are eating live octopus and filming the torture for youtube’, the images take on a Rubenesque lushness, full of symbolism and atmosphere.
Indeed much of the imagery references the increasingly overblown world of the baroque, a world that was on a collision course with the French Revolution. There is an underlying sadness, as if the artist is saying that this unsustainable behaviour will surely come to a crashing end at some point soon.
This will be Dale’s fifth solo show at Signal. His work has been seen in galleries across the world, notably in Paris, Rome, Berlin and in the USA. Dale is also getting recognition for his street art. He is now considered to be the leading street artists in the UK to use the woodcut print ‘paste up’ medium. He has also been invited to take part in a number of street art festivals across the UK and Europe, producing large mixed media works in his inimitable style.

Guy Denning
We are delighted to announce that we are showing the work of the much loved and respected Bristol artist, Guy Denning in his first London solo show for two years. It’s the final part of his trilogy of exhibitions interpreting Dante’s The Divine Comedy; PARADISO. Inferno and Purgatorio, which were shown in Bologna and New York, were a tremendous success and we think that the final part of the cycle will be equally so.
In PARADISO Denning has created a series of works that use highly individual visual imagery to depict the ecstatic route to a place of resolution and rest (for Dante the route to heaven). He is intrigued by how the moral ambiguities of the world we live in; with it’s emphasis on glorifying the here and now, finds resonances with the unshakeable medieval belief in the existence of life after death. Like Dante, Denning draws on contemporary political concerns to illustrate his vision.
Part of the exhibition is inspired by Beatrice, Dante’s long dead love, who is the central figure in the poem and who symbolises feminine purity and vulnerability. To represent this aspect of PARADISO Denning has painted a series of delicate portraits of famous women from the recent past, who died young and who have found immortality in their enduring youth.
Denning has been an artist all his adult life and in 2007, he moved from Bristol to rural Brittany to concentrate fulltime on his painting. The artistic freedom this move has given him has contributed greatly to the intense and consistently beautiful work that he has produced in this period; quite simply it has raised his art to a whole new level.
His belief in the importance of drawing skills is the foundation of all his work. He uses traditional painting methods of building up work from underlying sketches, mostly from life and often using his friends as models. Guy’s painting, mainly oil on canvas, is approached with an intellectual rigour, which is always directed towards a truthful interpretation of the world as he sees it. He is a unique artist in his technique, manner and choice of subject matter and this is at its best in his modern representation of Dante’s 14th century world.

In NYC there are certain rites of Summer that mark the onset of the new season. The beaches get cleaned of condoms and medical waste every year just in time for Memorial Day Weekend for example. Children playing in spraying fire hydrants on hot days – always splendid.
Water related activities remind us of another favorite Summer rite of hormones; Wet T-shirt contests! Also, saucy libertinas with short, fresh sun dresses going up or coming down the subways’ stairs on a windy platform without knickers, that’s always a pruient plus. And shirtless boys showing off by doing tricks on bikes, skateboards, or anything really – generally making fools of themselves- another Summer tradition.
And of course Bushwick Open Studios. This is the 6th Edition and we have loved every one.
Someone told us there are 500 open studios this year;
a. Bushwick has arrived, but you knew that
b. Artists can’t do math so don’t trust any numbers you hear for the next two days. Or is that three days?
Naturally, there will be plenty of Street Art as the scene continues to flourish and here are our recommendations …

Pandamonium
Over the years, it appears that several of our artists have become inspired by the iconic image of the Panda. In whatever form they emerge, whether as the bear itself or a human figure sporting an animal mask, these works always seem to be a sure-fire hit. So we thought… why don’t we ask a large group of artists to pay homage to the Panda and produce an entire exhibition dedicated to the cuddly creatures, resulting in a sell-out, recession-proof show?
The fabulous group of artists who are taking part in the show so far include: C215, Dale Grimshaw, Jef Aerosol, Elinor Evans, Byroglyphics (Russ Mills), SPQR, TRXTR, David Le Fleming, Gaye Black, Frank Rannou, Joram Roukes and newcomers to Signal; Lora Zombie, Chris Bell and Jane Price.

TRXTR
The artist known as Trxtr has been building himself a very strong reputation on the Urban Art scene over the past five years, the evidence for this success being some recent notable auction results. He has shown his work in around the Bristol area and also in group shows in London and Los Angeles. This will be his first solo show in London
Trxtr believes that in using a wide variety of techniques, he can create the effect of spontaneity and freedom that he is aiming for. His own (incomplete) list of techniques used ‘Chemical, digital and Polaroid photography, high resolution scans, large format archival printing, collage, painting, drawing’ says a lot about where he is coming from. This is not an artist who is wedded to any particular medium, but for him a rather more Machiavellian ‘ends justifies the means’ approach is favoured. He sees purist attitudes to techniques and mediums as ‘Ludditism’.
The work Trxtr has produced for the ‘Pretty Lethal’ show at Signal is the culmination of this period of experimentation and creative self-discovery. The works will show us as an eclectic mix of atmospheres and emotions, as the techniques he uses to produce them. Their overall effect is disturbing and alluring in equal measure. Concerns about exploitation, globalization and corruption appear over and over again, but the tone is ambivalent. He is not preaching to us, but reproducing some of the sickly sweet images of commercialism in a way that it is genuinely hard to tell if he is celebrating them or railing against them. This interesting and unsettling approach has something of effect of Jeff Koons work.
The works Trxtr has produced for the ‘Pretty Lethal’ will make a very strong introduction to his work for London audiences. Like Koons, we may find that audiences are split, between those who can and those who can’t see beyond the surface seductiveness of the work.

“Drawn Towards the Present”
The exhibition consists of an installation made out of monumental charcoal drawings on rice paper. The imagery represented in the drawings is based on a collection of press-clippings, which have been reworked and juxtaposed to create a labyrinth of fragments from contemporary history, standing as a tragic prologue to our future hopes and fears.
