Robots Spraying Out the Window – Jeff Soto

This car manufacturer placed robots in a car to spray the walls to give their product some street cred. While they are busy patting themselves on the back we’re reminded of many street art autonomous innovators who have done this kind of work on the streets before, like Mudlevel, who created the Robo-Rainbow three years ago (below). Self-funded experimenters have jerry-rigged bikes, scooters, contraptions, machines, even drones to spray paint onto walls over the last decade so this brand hasn’t pioneered anything new necessarily. Possibly they just saw the Alexander McQueen robots spraying a dress in 1999.

Cool project nonetheless and props to artist Jeff Soto for his continued good work.

Augmented reality continues to grow into the consumer world and this app will help you to replace those pesky print messages foisted into the public space with, oh, art.

Perhaps soon when you scan one of those hideous new all-car subway advertising campaigns it will trigger a full car piece by Lee Quinones! Now that’s an idea worth pursuing!

Edoardi Tresoldi “Pensieri” For street art festival “OLTRE IL MURO” in Sapri, Italy

A permanent installation of electro-welded net for Oltre il Muro festival, in Sapri, Italy, bends perception depending on the angle it is seen from, especially when shot by drone.

In their second collaboration, this Street Art and graffiti duo offer up their latest experiment combining their interests and skills and feeding them through a series of texturing. “This is what happens when new-school meets old-school, when technology collides with the primal. Real life distortion of spray tags & letter styles merged with animated gifs & overlay filters.”

The film opens on the politically charged Burma border at the first school teaching Sreet Art as a form of non-violent struggle. Under the threat of imprisonment and torture, the students use stencils, spray paint and wheatpaste to engage the public and question authority. 8200 miles away artist, Shepard Fairey is painting a 30’ mural of a Burmese monk for the same reasons and to support the struggle for Democracy in Burma.” from Breadtruck Films.

Neighborhood Love in Brooklyn

A new film by Serringe that celebrates the magical mix of sun and aerosol and a group of artists/writers/graff dudes all getting up in the neighborhood. The flows are nice, the movements a little hypnotic, the soundtrack allows you to travel, the love is there. Fall in.

Isaac Cordal: The Family

Street Artist Issac Cordal has been installing his small cement sculptures in staged scenes ever since Spain began suffering the brunt of the global financial crisis and he saw his country as having been dragged into an an economic, environmental and socialized purgatory. This new gallery show installation caught on video imprisons the organizational man and the entrepreneurial exec alike in much the same way as animals in our factory farms, with similar lighting but more room.  A conceptualist by nature, his message is heavier than cinder blocks some times, yet you won’t deny the devastating effect that his installations can have on your psyche as the camera pans and you see the effects of socialization on a mass level, evocative of cubicled offices and prisons, and may even cause a viewer to question things. Till the next video.

 

The Lurkers go to Bulgaria for Summer Fun

A self-described “movement” that makes urban exploration a spectator tagging sport, Lurkers may be a small club of skinny London boys in their 20s who like to spraycation through tunnels and abandoned monuments with their model girlfriends, discovering the hidden pockets that time forgot. Or Lurkers may be a well-positioned semi-chaotic lifestyle brand that is accumulating original content to help move product once you are hooked. One can envision the anonymity that these hilarious cartoon heads allow also being a way to extend a franchise once these rascals get old or get bored and need to be replaced. Either way, some of the sequences in their newly begun video series are alternately mundane, raw, soaring, or smartly sly.

It’s so difficult these days when true counterculture is swallowed whole by lifestyle brands and you can’t tell the real thing from the Coca-cola intervention but this is sort of Vice meets Monty Python meets reality show meets Polo with aerosol cans. The touchstones of rebelliousness and tomfoolery appear in a cheerfully non-political context but just as we we start to think that, we learn about world history on this trip, don’t we kids?  What really is lurking beneath the surface? Stop worrying and start adventuring.

Um, We Need a New Dance Craze

French Street Artist LUDO’s sculpture “The Cacktus”

Now, is that nice? Don’t want to read too much into the possible symbolism here, but LUDO may have some anger issues he’s working out in this new sculpture project.

Street Art Shows Its Softer Side in Canarsie, BK

Yo, we know ya’ll are hard beeaatches because you are STREET, right? Don’t front. And yet, Abe Lincoln Jr. shares this project with the BSA fam that makes everybody think you may not be the ostracized marginalized feral cats you pose as – Curated by the Love Movement, a handful of mostly New York Street Artists got together and painted big pieces to be permanently installed in a high school in the Carnarsie section of Brooklyn. Participating artists who gave of their creative juices freely include Leon Reid, Michael Defeo, Skewville, TooFly, Thundercut, Morning Breath, and Abe Lincoln Jr.

JMR Somewhere in Texas, “Here is Now”

It’s Getting Hot Out Here…. I know it was 97 degrees in NYC yesterday and it’s only June. At least here you literally CAN take off ALL of your clothes if you want.

Yes, Texas. Where they fry eggs on the street for breakfast, it’s so hot. That’s where Street Artist JMR has a show called “Here is Now”. Right now we are here, but congrats to Jim.
