“Marvelous Color” Show and Royce Bannon’s Interview

Comics and comic books have had a great influence on the artistic development of many graffiti and street artists and right now there is a cool show going on in Manhattan that explores some of the dopest.

Known for his devious and comical monsters in his own work, New York street artist Royce Bannon explores the monstrous paucity of African American Superheroes in comics in a new interview with a curator in Source Mag.

Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, curator of the Marvelous Color show, talks about the process of bringing the African-American super hero to the masses in NYC.

When did the idea to exhibit Marvels Black super heroes happen?

Somos Arte had the privilege of producing the first solo art show for Marvel’s Editor in Chief, Joe Quesada (www.santerians.com). After the success of his exhibit, we took some time to develop our next show. We wanted to do a new show that gave us the opportunity to highlight the many amazing renditions of these six African/African-American superheroes that are so culturally impactful to audiences regardless of race. They are multidimensional characters who have been developed and portrayed over 40 years. Marvelous Color allowed us curate an exhibition that displayed how different artists rendered and interpreted these characters over the decades. See more images and read more at THE SOURCE

The show, runs through February 26 at African Diaspora Institute on 58th Street called The Marvelous Color, featuring 27 artists, among whom are The Black Panther, Storm, Luke Cage, The Falcon, Blade and War Machine.

Says Will Work For Good, “We worked with Eric Wareheim on the aesthetic direction for his video for Major Lazer’s “Pon De Floor” featuring some of NY’s raddest dagga dancers. We wanted to take them off the typical club floor and put them on more mundane floors in an imaginary neighborhood where they could go about their business in private. All of the home environments were created as large paintings which were then photographed and transformed into a bizarre real estate fly-through by the dudes at Fatal Farm. Additionally we created a series of vector patterns used for the “otherworlds” featured throughout the video. All in all a sick mix of low/high tech and Eric’s always awesome visions.”

Brooklyn Filmmaker Collective “Cinema Set Free” produced this great video about the celebration of Street Art in New York called “Street Crush”. Thank you Antonio, Lawrence, Melissa, and Demitri of “Cinema Set Free” for your talents.

BrooklynStreetArt.com and AlphaBeta Art Space hosted a fun street art show with 43 street artists, 4 burlesque performers, and a kissing booth.  Working around themes of “Love, Sex, and the Street”, well-known street artists alongside relative whipper-snappers dug deep for fresh takes on gritty street ardor.

AD HOC hurtles BKMIA to Miami right on Time!

When your van breaks down and dies en route to Florida from New York, you might get a little cranky and freaked out because you have 40 people’s art in the back and are somewhat behind schedule.

You haven’t met the Buxtons.

Brooklyn gallerists Garrison and Alison from AdHoc found themselves at a U-Haul truck rental agency when it was obvious that fixing their jalopy wasn’t going to happen anytime soon.

“Yeah we’re definitely making some tangy lemonade out of the lemons we’ve been collecting,” says he.

With a show to mount and open in 2 days (Today) in Miami, they asked for a 14 foot or 18 foot truck but U-Haul was out of that size. So they upgraded to the 26 foot, which made the whole process of moving art a lot easier, and together they steered the MIGHTY BKMIA SHIP southward.

“We just got another beautiful space today”, says Garrison, now that they’ve arrived with a truck of Brooklyn Street Art in the land of orange groves and mobs of art-hungry models in stilettos.  They are spreading out into their new giant space on 4141 Northeast 2nd Avenue, which is right across the street from their original space. They had a lot of people’s work with them, “Yeah there was no way it all was going to fit in the original space we had”

And the art itself?  One of the first things to be unpacked was this badass sculpture.

This is an interactive kinetic piece by Ryan Doyle and UFO of 907 crew.

According to the artists, it’s made of found objects and crafted using caveman spaceship technology. Amazingly similar to the squidlike image in the photo below, this sculpture is mechanized with two worm head, gear drive electric wheelchair motors, and is fully operational with a joystick. And yes, Martha, he does look like a writer (check out the fat marker in his tentacle).

Ad Hoc is partnering with Brooklyn neighbor Eastern District in a conceptual gallery called AE District to show off some of Brooklyn’s finest street artists, graff writers, and related contemporary artists in a 40+ name show. Names you might know like London Police and Gaia and Morning Breath will be joining talented newbies like NohJColey and Mario Brothers.

It’s Getting Hot Down There: ART BURN MIAMI

Eartburner-mpresario and street artist Celso has a sense of humor about most things, and street art in particular.

Without reading too much into it, it’s easy to understand how some of the hype surrounding the humongus Art Basel in Miami this week does tend to turn off the hot-headed anti-capitalist anti-consumerist anti-consumption anti-homogenization-of-everything-in-our culture-types in our midst.

Not that any of these artists are in that category, but it is pretty funny to learn that this one-day only art show ends with all the art being burned, and none of it added to your burgeoning street-art collection.

New York, NY – November 24, 2009 – Mighty Tanaka (http://www.mightytanaka.com) is proud to announce Hybridism, the premier show within its new DUMBO project/gallery space, opening with a reception on December 3, 2009 through January 7, 2010. There’s a growing creative movement that we’ve dubbedHybridism: a blend of both street art and fine art – a hybrid – as the raw meets the refined. It is the juxtaposition of genres, which both compliments and conflicts; the balance between these otherwise artistic opposites. Hybridism, the show, captures a collection of both twisted fine art and underground street art in a span of mediums: vivid photography, collage, and rich oil & acrylic paintings on everything from canvas to found wood.

From classic oil paintings of alcohol-blurred nightlife, a squirrel riding a two-headed goat, and a trippy diorama of the industrialization age, to street-style satanic mummies, tribal paintings on book covers, and graffiti-influenced silkscreens on newspapers – Hybridism displays the atypical and the urban within one space.

“I always look to accentuate the idea of hybridism, and of pairing opposites together; this will be common thread in all of my shows, despite their varied themes,” says Mighty Tanaka owner and curator, Alex Emmart. “My goal? To bring this burgeoning and exciting artistic movement to the next level.”

QUICK LOOK – MID WAY THRU A RAINY MBP URBAN ARTS FEST

In to each festival a little rain must fall.  Drat!

That’s okay, a loose posse of people pulled off some work before the deluge.  And now the rain is over and the air is clean and crisp and the darkness falls and the dancefloor is being created before our eyes and hung with lights so the dance party can start in earnest!

A lot of Bushwick artists only awakened 3 hours ago and are on their second cup of coffee anyway, so by 9 p.m. there should be a steady throng of beer-guzzling peeps streaming in for the fresh smell of aerosol and Quicksilver. Organizers estimated 800 people have come through the doors and bobbed in and out of the multiple galleries, store spaces and checked out the bands, DJs and painters, stencilers, wheatpasters. Not bad for the first time MBP!

Street Artist Royce Bannon has been doing some writing at the Source magazine, and his first bi-monthly installment is below. In his first article he draws attention to the socio-political messages that mural makers convey, and their salience in an image soaked mediascape.
