Welcome to BSA Images of the Week!

It’s great to see new pieces appearing on the streets this week, including numerous tributes to our patron renegade Eurasian eagle-owl, the famous Flaco, who escaped from the zoo and spent much time exploring Manhattan in the last year. His fine-feathered life tragically cut down when he flew into a building, it is surmised, Flaco’s life is nonetheless celebrated for his badass breakout in search of freedom. Another famously plumed New Yorker, Iris Apfel, the wealthy showy fashion icon who had wild taste and outstanding clothes, died at 102. You can check out a documentary made about her a few years ago here.

We start with some tributes to Flaco on the street and follow with some other bon mots for you to see.

Here is our weekly conversation with the street, this week including Gane, Calicho Art, Phoebe New York, Beltr, and BAK.

Just as we leave for Madrid’s Urvanity we thought you’d like a look at New York’s current scene on the street. Or a portion of it.

We start off the new collection with Andy Warhol, who looks fresh on the street – and who’s work is on exhibit at on display currently at the Whitney.

Also he is in an ad campaign for Burger King – that old footage of him eating one of those mystery meat sandwiches is now wholly appropriated to actually sell their products instead of mock them. It’s from Jørgen Leth’s 1982 documentary 66 Scenes From America. According to folklore, Andy didn’t even like BK – preferred McDonalds. What a jokester, that Mr. Warhol. #fastdeathfood

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this time featuring Antennae, City Kitty, Combo-CK, DPM Crew, Fuck Cats, Invader, Matt Siren, Phoebe New York, Seed, The Postman Art, and William Wegman.

Yes we know. This is an ad for junk food. But that’s besides the point. Most of you who were glued to the TV during the Superbowl got to see the actual video of Andy eating the hamburger…vintage pop if not art…

Let’s move to kittens. These two are showing serious PDA. Fuck Cats. (photo © Jaime Rojo)

New York, New York, in the thick of summer. The heat is heavy with humidity, smells of hotdogs, marijuana, perfume, piss. The flat screen sunglasses now on every sweet face hide the glances and stares of the voracious, the vacuous, the visionary, the vexed, and those voluntarily enraptured by romance.  Again we take refuge under a tree, on a bench, in the grass with our dog, in the frozen food section with our kids, on the sunbaked and garbage strewn sand in Coney Island, on the fire escape with our swollen-lipped and rosy cheeked lover. And everywhere is art and architecture and stoop sales and thumping music and jackhammers and the swooping yell of “gooooooooaaaaaaaalllll!” from a nearby sports bar during this month of the World Cup.

Here’s our weekly interview with the streets, this week featuring Alex Proba, Arkane, Blanco, City Kitty, David Hollier, Invader, Irak, Jason Naylor, LMNOPI, Mowcka, Phoebe New York, Renee Caoulette, Rubin 415, Staino, and Stikman.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2015

You did it! First week of 2016 DONE! Congratulations sis we still have a few blocks to go. Exciting new gallery shows already this weekend with Esteban Del Valle in LA and Dalek / Interezni Kazki in NYC and a home-baked hard nut trio of El Sol 25, Specter, and Russell Murphy “Putting It In” in Brooklyn this week. Actually the latter would like to further the dialogue with you about what is the current rightful state of illegal work among all the pretty murals going up now on the streets.

“Today the lines between legal and illegal works on the streets have been blurred by social media and the overcommercialization of the graffiti and street art aesthetic and although many of the artists working currently to create legal murals have helped the art form gain international recognition and acceptance, many of the artists strictly creating illegal works have not had opportunities to separate themselves from the growing roster of legal muralists,” says the press release.

Meanwhile this week the stock market was its worst since 2011, Obama readied his last State of the Union, El Chapo was thinking of vacationing north of the border, Hong Kong Street Art was asking people about 5 missing booksellers, the Lotto jackpot broke records and a Queen Victoria statue was “Vaj-ed” in Bristol.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Apples on Pictures, Billi Kid, Brolga, Felix Semper, Honschar, Hot Tea, Kai, Keith Haring, Kerry James Marshall, Lunge Box, Mgr Mors, Otto “Osch” Schade, Phoebe New York, Scoutpines, Specter, Thiago Goms, and War Buck$.

Keith Haring (1958-1990) painted these two murals on the same handball wall verso and reverso in a park on Harlem River Drive and E 128 Street in 1986. The murals were restored last year. Keith donated the art work to the city of New York. We heard his name mentioned in conversation as we were riding the subway and wanted to share these art works with you as a reminder of his art and his influence on today’s Street Art world.

BSA-Images-Week-Jan2015

This is the harvest season when all the fruits of Street Artists labor are on display for everyone to admire – and just before the frost transforms all the leaves and turns the grass brown and your cheeks red, it is time for you to go outside with your camera. There is a new talented crop of artists on the street that has been maturing these last few seasons and of course there are the perennials on display as well. New York in the autumn is always dramatic; the perfect stage to unveil new productions, new art shows, new movies, new musical compositions, and new standards being set. If the pickings for this weeks BSA Images of the Week are an indication, Autumn is at full peak right now, pure splendor.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Billi Kid, City Kitty, City Rabbit, Danielle Mastrion, Dee Dee, Elbow-Toe, Ernest Zacharevic, Hiss, Kai, Myth, Olek, Phoebe New York, Pixote, Sean9Lugo, Spider Tag, Tom Fruin, Tony De Pew, WK Interact, and You Go Girl!

You can feel it rippling through the streets, the impact of one strong piece after another beguiling and besting your expectations. And that’s just the organic free-range un-permissioned stuff.

The LoMan Festival is enjoying its first official edition, continuing today so you may want to head to Little Italy to see the Secret Walls battle in the lot and Cosbe surfing across a tidal wave of stickers that he and the 200-strong sticker club have procured. The festival itself is a zany mix of music, comedy, street art, murals, and live performance – you’ll probably dig it.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Apple on Pictures, Dasic, Faith47, Gold Luxe, Hunt, JR, Mint & Serf, Mr. Toll, Olek, Phoebe New York, Sean9Lugo, Solus, The Dingle Lane, and Urban Fish.

Summertiiiiiiiiiiimmme, and the living is eaaaaassssssyyyyy. Yessir, today is the first day of Summer here in New York and the longest day of the year – which means you can take a nap under a tree in the park or on your towel at the beach and still have plenty of time to play when you wake up. There are abandoned buildings to explore, murals to paint, wheat-pastes to stick, interventions to engineer, stencils to cut, selfies to snapchat, potato chips to eat, beer to swig. That couch by the window is calling me even now, the big temptress, as she does so often on these languorous days, induced by the heat. But I will not heed her siren song.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring Bezt, Buff Monster, Dain, Dee Dee, Faile, Fra. Biancoshock, Free Humanity, Gold Loxe, Li-Hill, Natalia Rak, Okuda, Old Broads, Phoebe, Sophia Hirsch and Johannes Mundinger, and Simon Vazquez and Sebastien Waknine.

If only we would stop paying lip service to the foundational importance of motherhood; if millions of mothers would know that tomorrow they will have food to feed their children, that they could live without fear of violence, could take off time from work to care for their families, were paid a living wage equal to a that of a man, could feel loved, protected, supported, respected and cherished.

Let’s all work to make sure that more mothers experience love and a peace of mind. Even if your mother is not alive and here with us today, we can support someone’s who is.

Here’s our weekly interview with the street, this week featuring $howta, Anthony Lister, Brolga, City Rabbit, Gualicho, Hot Tea, JR, M*Code, Mr. Volpe, Nina Kunan, No More Lies, Pablo Harymbat, Phoebe New York, Pyramid Oracle, Swil, Tristan Eaton, and Willow.

The phrase in Tristan’s new mural inspired by the Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five song from 1983, “New York, New York”.

New York, New York
Big City of Dreams
and every thing in New York
ain’t always what it seems.
