Pandemic Breaks Out Inaugural Show Featuring Epic EKG Piece

It’s baaaaaack.  And not a minute too soon.

Pandemic Gallery re-opens tonight in the Navy Yard area in Brooklyn with a bigger more commodious location for freethinkers unconcerned with the white box. Rooted in the graffiti and Street Art scene, proprietors and co-curating artists Robin Drysdale and Keely Brandon apply their vision of what they love about the street in its rawest form in a way that will never require the bloviating self-appointed art “critics” to know their value.

EKG, the down-by-law all-city heartbeat with an orange china marker is the inaugural symbol signifying script writer on the walls of Pandemic tonight – a fitting tribute to the mark making traditions of NYC that predate the modern, communicating and capturing the ions and lightwaves and innerworkings that flicker through his mind. EKG is steeped in history and theory and swimming in a unique diagrammatic flow chart that envelopes his universe and he shares it with guests tonight across “the 528 square foot schematic drawing that I’ve been working on,” he says.

At the end of the show, the mammoth EKG installation will then be deconstructed and sold off in pieces like the former industrial artist neighborhood of Williamsburg that eventually became too expensive for the artists who brought it to life, and galleries like Pandemic.

Included at the opening will be an EKG print release and head rocking performances by Fake Hooker and Unstoppable Death Machines. Also, says EKG, “lots of exclamation points!!!” !!!!!!

Pandemonium on the Walls at Pandemic

Brooklyns’ Pandemic Gallery recently invited a sort of painted pandemonium to fill all the walls of their space for a summer art party. Shoulder to hip and head to toe, this mixture of artists is actually emblematic of this moment in Brooklyn history and representing the raucous variety of styles that are mashing and mixing on the graffiti/street art/fine art continuum throughout the world.

But no one likes to be labelled and if you ask them and probably each of these artists would prefer not to be called graffiti artists or street artists or fine artists because each title has too many limitations or insulting inferences. One thing everybody agrees on is they like to paint on walls and while we have seen our share of bring-all-your-friends wall smashing that somehow goes awry, this indoor installation is one of the most cogent mashup derby style groupings you are likely to see this year.

KingBrown Group Show at Klughaus (NYC)

Mike Giant is in New York and he brought some juicy markers with him. The New Show at Klughaus Gallery in Manhattan’s Chinatown hosted him yesterday with folks from Kingbrown Magazine to mark the release of their issue #8. The group show of small pieces in the gallery is smartly, densely packed with names you’ll like and  is now open to the public after last nights hot and sticky grand opening that ended with Mother nature blowing exhibition skateboarders sideways with sudden summer storm high winds and pounding rain. The show was presented along with the dudes from Fountain Arts Fair.

Quel Beast Solo Reception at Gallery Bar (NYC)

The Gallery Bar on the Lower East Side of Manhattan hosts the opening reception today of Quel Beast’s solo show of portraits full of emotion as he continues in the journey of self-study. In a short career on the street that has depicted everything from anguish to rage to frustration, it is good to report that there is now an occasional smile.

Klub7 from Berlin to Brooklyn (VIDEO)

July 5, 2012

The best way to enjoy New York is to plunge in! Holding back is for amateurs. Just try to see and taste and hear and touch as much of the ever-churning smorgasbord as you can. This spring members of the Berlin Street Art collective KLUB7 helped themselves to the New York buffet and exhausted themselves with artmaking as the rode their bikes through most of Brooklyn’s neighborhoods and a few in Manhattan too, delving directly into the street life and meeting its people. The centerpiece was a lively and entertaining show at Brooklyn’s Pandemic gallery and while they prepared for it they also managed to squeeze in as much adventure outside as possible.

Happy Friday Everybody!  Sometimes we like to start Friday off with a dance and for those of you born after the Queen of Disco roooooled the dance floors in New York, you may not realize the impact that Donna Summer had on propelling the dance music genre in the late 70s and 80s here and around the world.  Sadly Mrs. Summer passed yesterday and our sincere condolences to her family. But Donna always encouraged her fans to dance! So let’s do it and celebrate her talent!

Check out the undulating gorgeous robotic dancing she does at about the 2 minute marker here. She was a smash, a brave and beautiful woman who was not afraid to experiment and discover. Everybody hands in the air!

Hold Up! Don’t Sit Down Yet! We gotta do a tribute to the God Father of Go-Go – Mr. Chuck Brown, who also passed this week on Wednesday. Rest in Peace Mr. Brown.  Here is a favorite summer Jam by Chuck Brown- As long as the beat keep poppin’, Chuck Brown keep on rockin!

Doze Green at Jonathan Levine Saturday (Manhattan)

Tomorrow, the Jonathan Levine Gallery in Manhattan bring us the Graffiti legend Doze Green with a new body of work in an exhibition titled “Luminosity In The Dark Rift”. Doze Green’s illustrious career spans decades in NYC since the late 70’s and as one of the original b-boy members of the Rock Steady Crew he was involved in the hip-hop/graffiti movement of the city and his work has influenced generations of new writers and Street Artists working today.

ArtPad (San Francisco)

Art fairs are popping up like pimples on your cousin Josh’s 13 year old face. For that matter, so are film festivals , beauty pageants and food trucks. It seems that there is a new one being inaugurated every month in different cities around the world. But not all Art Fairs are created equal and this weekend the micro-fair ArtPadSF takes place in San Francisco. It’s a smaller fair for emerging and contemporary art with a reputation for distinguishing itself from the rest.

Whatever it is that makes ArtPadSF unique they have one thing in common with the rest: Dealers and artists gather together under one roof to sell their merch. Bring your wallet or not and try to enjoy the art.

KLUB7 ART COLLECTIVE

The Berlin, Germany based art collective KLUB7 is creating art on various surfaces, making murals, customizations and illustrations throughout the world. Together they developed a collective trademark style that combines the diverse backgrounds of the six members. KLUB7 has been around for more than 10 years. Born out of the graffiti scene in the east of Germany, this collective has undergone an amazing transformation. Since the group’s inception, all five men and its one female member have entered their 30s and developed a very diverse range of activities, that leaves the collective creation of graffiti art behind, although they have not completely renounced those roots. From the subculture of urban art to projects under legal conditions KLUB7 has progressively and continuously expanded its network. Alongside, Berlin as a melting pot and a centre for contemporary art has become their home – and it demands as much as it supports.
The fact that KLUB7 uses chalk, appear to be a tricky consequence on unfriendly experiences. Increased surveillance, fines and numerous campaigns against tagging and other media, including posters, stickers and stencils, have seen a real boom in developed countries. Official advertizing campaigns trying to avoid juristic debates or even punishment with using chalk spray. This should feel and look like rebellion without being subject to criminal charges. KLUB7 is motivated for other reasons in using chalk. They work on walls and the ground. First of all, this simple drawing and painting material is easy available and seems particularly fit for spontaneous artistic interactions. Most often, their activities involve children as well as the adult public in a sort of “jam session” that expands the view of graffiti art to an acceptable public act.

“This exhibition shows you how much fun New York City used to be” – Mare 139

Opening to the public today Keith Haring: 1978-1982 at the Brooklyn Museum and while Mare 139 has a point, we contend that Brooklyn is still tons of fun, if Manhattan has lost much of it’s edge. Regarding this exhibit, GO! Exquisitely curated, it welcomes the viewer to Mr. Haring’s early days in NYC when the “downtown” scene was the scene.

The curators have included pieces rarely or never before viewed including an amazing slide show of images taken by Kwong Chi showing the artist illegally putting work in the subways. Combined with some of Harings journals, his Cipher chart, videos and 155 works mostly on paper, it is informative, accessible and fun to see.

Stikman “20” at Pandemic

One of the most prolific and hermetic Street Artists working today on the streets of New York, sometimes literally melted into the street, Stikman has a gentle legend to his name. His solo show “20” opens today at Pandemic Gallery today, offering a rare glimpse into his world of secrecy and continuous invention. The little stick character he’s been leaving for two decades is synonymous with the symbol-based tagging of graff writers and the re-inventive practice of a fine artist continuously exploring new techniques of expression.

Mexican Street Artist SANER has been impressing Street Art and graff fans in the last couple of years with his near magic interpretations, incredibly rendered. Chris Stain “Long Story Short” at Wooster Social Club

At the crowded opening for Chris Stain’s new show and book launch Wednesday, the vibe was a testament to his working class roots and real people charm, with Billy Mode on the turntables and Ray Cross from Bushwick Print Lab screen-printing some fresh Occupy Wall Street posters for people to take to the streets. It’s the the kind of kindred community that fostered “Long Story Short”, his new monogram on Drago, and the kind of environment that makes Stains work resonant in these times where the working person feels like they have a boot to his/her neck. Stop by The Wooster Social Club anytime to see Mr. Stain’s new body of work and catch an intimate look into his influences both as an artist and as a person.

What more can be said about the mysterious artist known only as “Stikman” that hasn’t been uttered hundreds of times by passersby all over the city? His work is sneaky, incredibly thought provoking and uncommonly satisfying to come across, and if you have been living on the east coast or, well, basically anywhere in the states you no doubt have discovered it in some aspect. It could be in the form of 3D men made of small sticks to figures hidden in iconic imagery pasted to doors, or literally under your feet, smashed into the concrete. The range of mediums used and the calculated creativity given to each piece is overshadowed only by the sheer amount of work he has affixed to our cities surfaces. Tireless efforts aside, his stick formed character remains one of the most recognizable images in urban art culture. So, on that note we are proud and excited to announce the first solo exhibition of our favorite and New York’s most elusive street artist: Stikman.

from the artist:

It was the summer of 1992 that I deployed my first stikman in the East Village. In the early years the sticks were not painted, It took me much longer to make them at the time because I was always changing the way they were constructed. In the first year I don’t think I made more than 50 of them, they were between 5 and 6 inches tall and made of basswood. By 1996 I had started painting them and begun producing many more per year.

Once I started painting the 3-D stikmen I also started to paint stickers. Combining the 2 dimensional graphic element expanded my view of the ever changing stikman form, and the project took off in unforeseen directions. I was finding many different materials and processes with which to explore the realm of stikman.  Over the years I have affixed and painted the stikman on numerous LP record covers, prints, book pages, cut paper paste-ups, hollow core doors and a variety of metal, wood, cloth and plastic objects. Some of my favorite pieces include stenciling images on ping pong balls, bricks, tiny slide viewers, and playing cards. And of course there were always little wooden men made of sticks.

My pieces start their lives as static objects, but they come to life when I place them in a public place where they are subject to the forces of time, interactions with humans and climate. I share this transient form of art to connect with a viewer whom I will never meet, in hopes that the joy of finding the unexpected has altered their consciousness. It finds an indigenous space in our surroundings like a flower escaping from the crack in a sidewalk. Continuously altered by time and circumstance.

To celebrate twenty years of playing in the street with sticks I have created a special battalion of twenty figures to send out into the world with the hope that the friends of stikman will take him along on new journeys to places he has not yet been. I have also created twenty works on paper to commemorate the paper element associated with stikman.Ten of these are PAINTBLAST, which is a form of automatic painting that occurs when I paint the wood figures.
