Tempeh is a soy product and meat substitute originally from Indonesia. Tempe is a city in Arizona that is hosting the 4th giant Sticker Phiends show tonight. Stickers continue to grow in influence in Street Art and in private collections in black books and refrigerator doors and this is a cool show that gives them away and sells them. They have limited edition “Sticker Phiends” tee-shirts designed by Brooklyn street art collective Robots Will Kill. Also cold beer. Possibly tempeh too because Chris RWK is a good veggie.

The streets are coming alive with sculpture-like objects this spring – repurposed household items and brand new houses for the avian set are suddenly popping up like yellow and purple crocuses on the toxic banks of the Gowanus Canal. Also you’ll notice a bit more nudity these days, some frankly frank, as spring and a young man’s/woman’s fancy are abloom.

Birdwatching in Central Park is one of the most popular naturalist activities, and Street Art watching is a favorite naturalist activity of cultural soothsayers here at BSA. You never know what kind of plummage or pattern you are going to see as you round the corner of an abandoned lot or rusted doorway. As the geological, political, and economic seasons shift, different birds can be seen in the urban brush – reappearing familiar ones, and new previously unseen. Like an avid birdwatcher, sometimes you can find the name in your guidebook, other times you just note the markings and hope for future clues.

Ellis G @ Mighty Tanaka Tonight in Brooklyn
There is only one Ellis G and he’s been banging out these hand-traced silhouettes across the city for a good run, now. With a deft hand the Brooklyn Street Artist literally draws your attention to shadow and light, using the cityscape and chalk. Over time his photos of his work have taking on a poignancy because they capture this truly temporary, almost ethereal shadowing of elongated, foreshortened, and otherwise curiously distorted urban structures – freezing them for a second before they fade into the gritty ethers. Tonight he’ll be performing live at his opening at Mighty Tanaka.

Area Grandmother Comes Forward As ‘Banksy’

“LONDON—At a press conference Tuesday, 89-year-old Rose Biggin, a grandmother from the Camden Town neighborhood of North London, announced that she was in fact the internationally renowned graffiti artist known only as Banksy. “Those drawings? Oh, yes, those are mine,” said the diminutive octogenarian, who admitted to scaling buildings and climbing fences in order to put up life-sized stenciled images that satirize modern society’s mores and its inherent political power structures. “It sure does help to pass the time.” Biggin then returned home, where along with some of her “dearest friends,” she sipped tea, sampled some nice ginger cake, and planned the necessary destruction of dominant capitalist paradigms.” Courtesy of The Onion
Damn, these people are so busy! I’m crawling around under the bed looking for a lost sock and Shepard’s over there on the left coast making art to address “the dialogue about power and control in society” and having an art show with the King of DEVO.
– It’s a paraphrase of the Christmas crabby New Yorker who relies on the tourists who pump money into Broadway and Times Square restaurants and FAO and who actually eat those hot dogs and pretzels on the street. In the case of Miami, Art Basel 2010 draws to a close now and one billion dollars are estimated to have been transacted. When you pair that figure with the estimated 2-3000 artists participating, it looks like the artists must have made out rather well, right?
Certainly there were more Street Artists than ever attending the events and transforming walls everywhere with their work and creativity – at least in the unofficially sanctioned areas. At the moment Miami is “The only city in the US where graffiti appreciates property value,” ironically says Mint and Serf, a Street Art collective visiting the tropical city from frigid New York. In an odd twist on the “broken window theory” and urban blight, artists who are normally looking over their shoulder can actually wave to and talk with police who are driving by in some run-down areas where they are given free reign over large swaths of walls. At this sunny moment in time various agendas are intertwined and one wonders how long this golden age lasts.
Street Art photographer and observer Geoff Hargadon took in the breadth of the week on the street and attended a number of the events over the past weeks’ art orgies. He captured many jewels and quick moments with his camera and his 6th sense, which are below. As various larger pieces are unfinished right now, we’ll be going back in a few weeks for a year-end overview.
In addition to an intuitive eye about the art trends happening that impact the scene, Geoff gives a commentary about what else he’s thinking about: “Here is the other thing that’s a trend: property owners have their hands over all these walls for artists to takeover, and then suddenly they are leased out to restaurants, coffee shops, and other businesses. It’s hard to know who’s playing whom here – maybe it’s a happy co-existence – but when does the property owner step up to support these guys in other ways? (Unless, of course, it’s already happening.) Either way, artists are playing a big role in the development of these neighborhoods, and whether they know it or not, as the area gets more developed and gentrified, they will eventually run themselves out of town. Whether they are getting paid or not, they are creating their own extinction in Miami.”
The British have such a funny sense of humor – or HUMOUR, that they call this new mega-street-art-show opening in London called “One Foot in the Grove”.

The “One Foot in the Grove” exhibition of street art by ‘Mutate Britain’ – I think this is the second year – is getting underway Friday, and preparations have begun IN EARNEST.
