While there was some mindlessly pompous chatter surrounding the heralded display of actual walls by Banksy at the Context fair, the sometimes vandal’s work was surprisingly unremarkable to most attendees, who glanced at it and kept walking. If anything, the security guards helped garner a little interest. It is illuminating to find that outside of the hyper-excited Street Art fandom bubble that we are often in, an actual Banksy work doesn’t have as much magnetism that you might expect.

The walls (or pieces of walls) that were on display are said to have been stolen and the artist is said to be angered about it, but no arrests have been made and no property seized. Since the majority of graffiti or Street Artists are not wont to ask for permission to do their thing, most understand that no “rules” are typically invoked to protect their work on the street, or off it. Now that Banksy’s work is so high profile and sells at auctions and is in museums, it’s like putting a luxury watch or crystal vase on a wall out in the public – its market value is just too tempting for certain individuals. While this is an unsavory outcome to some, it’s not likely to change much.

“I am not a fan of what Bankrobber did, but, presuming it’s not some elaborate collaboration, I’m amused by the fact that Banksy doesn’t control it, and how his work is being displayed: among people who apparently don’t care about it nor did they come to see it… where Banksy is not necessarily the center of attention,” says Hargadon, remarking that one piece is shown behind a velvet rope.

FIRST LOOK at Miami 2012: Walls, Street Art, Action!

Street Art is already smacking up Miami walls – an aerosol advance committee of art in the streets to welcome the bacchanal of collectors, performers, artists, fans, galleries, hoodlums, charlatans, thumping beats, and very famous and important celebrities you have never heard of are all here for Art Basel and related fairs.

Just for you, we have some of the first images of the walls as they are going up…

..from Martha Cooper, who is on the ground documenting all the walls going up for Wynwood Walls as she has done officially for them for a few years now, and she talks about the new OBEY tribute to Wynwood Walls founder Tony Goldman who passed away this autumn, and shows us DAZE in action.

We also have on-the-beat stuff from photographer and BSA contributor Geoff Hargadon – who has an insatiable thirst for clever spots and a keen eye for capturing them. We’ll be bringing more from him to you later this week too.

Finally the ever clever twins How & Nosm offer you images of their just completed Wynwood Wall mural, a collabo with VHILS.

“The biggest and maybe most interesting wall this year is the one by OBEY. They completely re-did their first Wynwood wall from 2009. That one was all wheat pasted. This time they used a technique similar to that of Sten & Lex. They lightly pasted pre-printed sheets on the wall and then cut out the black parts with X-Acto knives, making a stencil. After spraying, the paper was peeled away, leaving the paint” – Martha Cooper

Happy GLBT Pride Weekend New York

Celebrating the first anniversary of legalized marriage equality in the State of New York AND the 6 months since the repeal of the US military’s ban on GLBT officers serving openly, this weekends’ parties, celebrations will be punctuated by a march attended by 1.7 million people in the street. Keith Haring would have been proud.

Moody at Pandemic (BKLYN)

Go see for yourself why this artist has quickly become one of the most followed and admired Street Artists. Vues sur murs dans le cadre de La Louvière métropole culturelle 2012 du 26 mai au 2 septembre 2012

Depuis plus de 30 ans, des artistes investissent les murs des villes, leurs moyens de transport, leur mobilier sous couvert d’anonymat. Depuis ces inscriptions, plus connues sous le nom de graffitis, ce mouvement a pris aujourd’hui des formes multiples, rassemblées sous le nom d’art urbain ou street art. Les artistes varient leurs supports et leurs modes d’expression, offrant au passant des réalisations aux propos politiques, ludiques dans des emplacements parfois surprenants.

L’image en série, imprimée est également de la partie, sous la forme de pochoirs, d’affiches détournées ou d’autocollants.

Une dizaine d’artistes belges et internationaux ayant choisi l’espace urbain comme terrain d’expérimentation investiront les salles du musée et le centre ville de La Louvière par leurs créations éphémères, installations,… Gravures et affiches provenant de collections privées, pochoirs peints sur les murs des salles d’expo, installations créées pour l’occasion, telles seront les interventions visibles au Centre de la Gravure cet été.

C215, Denis Meyers, Doctor H, Evol, Jef Aérosol, Ludo, Muga, Obêtre, Sten & Lex, Invader, Swoon sont les artistes invités à l’occasion de cette manifestation. Des interventions dans le centre ville (collage, pochoirs, mosaïque) constituent la deuxième partie de l’exposition, pour une déambulation urbaine.

Shepard Fairey: “The Protester”

The Huffington Post ARTS interviews El Angelino Shepard Fairey on “The Protester”, his cover image for TIME Magazine’s issue Person of the Year.

“Time Magazine released its annual ‘Person of the Year’ issue, with ‘The Protestor’ earning the coveted title as well as the magazine cover.

The glory of the win is shared amongst protestors worldwide, including those involved in the Arab Spring, Russian election rallies and, of course, Occupy Wall Street. Activist street artist Shepard Fairey, of Obama’s HOPE poster fame, designed the cover image. Boston Street Art, and Swoon’s “Anthropocene” at ICA

Her name is unpronounceable, so people just call her Mrs. Bennett. One of the last aboriginal people in Australia, she sits atop a rolling line of four-eyed Tibetan demons with human faces who are sucking species into their mouths on this wall installation at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA). Traditionally these demons would be protective, but “Swoon really sees these as a representation of humanity’s need to devour, and in excess, to destroy“ explains Pedro Alonzo, curator of the show, as he gives guests a tour of “Anthropocene”, the two part installation by the Brooklyn Street Artist. The shows’ name refers to the current era, and according to Wikipedia, “The Anthropocene is a recent and informal geologic chronological term that serves to mark the evidence and extent of human activities that have had a significant global impact on the Earth’s ecosystems.”

Part two of the installation at this modern museum overlooking the Boston waterfront is the mini temple suspended from the ceiling in the entry hall to the galleries, best viewed from the glass central elevator that carries you from floor to floor. With joints hand-tied in a manner Swoon learned from Chinese scaffolding architecture, the 400 pound structure is made of bamboo, copper, and multiples of hand cut paper animals, species endangered or soon to be in this era of human destruction on Earth. “She built the structure in four parts, we assembled it and installed it (over 6 days), and she draped it with these materials, ” said Alonzo.

During the installation the main hall was reserved for work tables and a temporary print shop, where many assistants spent hours hand cutting the animals and shapes that adorn the works and the parade that swings from the ceiling connecting the two areas. Seahorses, frogs, beetles, and butterfies all create the chain of life in this intuitive biologic story of connective species and collective endangerment. Disappearing before they can become fossils, the animal world is memorialized in this most ephemeral of materials, an exhibition that will similarly be destroyed when the wall is sanded and painted. In this impermanent way, it best mimics the installations Swoon does on the street.

Then out to the streets of Boston we went, hitting a number of spots with the guidance of photographer, artist, and Street Art expert Geoff Hargadon, who began one of the city’s only organic walls for Street Art and graffiti art in 2007. A natural magnet for painters and wheat-pasters, the ever-changing dialogue of “The Wall” on display is periodically wiped clean for a new group installation. The outdoor gallery has provided an outlet for hundreds of local and visiting artists as well as a providing a backdrop to photo shoots, video, and television programs. On the day we were there, a dancer was set to perform her moves under bright lights in the alleyway. Below are images from that days tour.

“There were a few things that went into creating this photo and I will try to sum up my meanings and reasoning behind it.

I first off wanted to capture the sort of sideshow spectacle that goes along with a rat being stenciled on a building. Blek Le Rat probably would have been a lot more famous had the full boom of internet media been around during his stencil height.

Most people these days know of a stenciled rat as being a Banksy thing, that too could be blamed on the media in general. I too am a fan of Banksy’s work, back before you had to either stand in a line to get a print or pray you win the lottery that goes into acquiring one these days. The reason for all the people taking pictures is the hype that surrounds his pieces, most of these “photographers” would not even look twice at other graffiti that could accompany the wall, that could very well be a known graffiti legend. I tend to look at some of the photographers taking shots to say they have actually seen a piece in person and the other half are going to upload photos to create a new set of coffee mugs and mouse pads to be sold on Ebay. The “Guess Who?” on the wall was a comment on various headlines and such you constantly see. For every 10 articles of “OMG new Banksy on wall in such and such”, turns out only about 1 is real. Almost anything stenciled on a wall these days will have some amateur journalist drumming up web hits by just putting Banksy’s name in a title. That is my personal opinion and reason for the piece.” ~ Enomeks

As you scan the skies this weekend for bright lights at night you are likely to see a lot of new Street Art in NYC that has suddenly exploded.

At a steady march French Street Artist JR and company is taking over walls in New York during his campaign of installations culminating in multiples in the Bronx this weekend, bursting like the crescendo of fireworks at the end of a show. Similarly Shepard Fairey is in town for a few more days getting up with some new aesthetic and political stuff he’s been working on around the city. In time for this weekends celebrations and commemorations, Street Artist General Howe has put up a brand new hand carved print (his first?) of the skeletal remains of a soldier, expanding on his themes of war and Brooklyn’s historical connection to America’s bloody founding. If anyone thought that Spring had given us a deluge of Street Art in New York City, it looks like Summer 2011 is going to set some records, and not just on thermometers.
