Feliz Cinco De Mayo to all the Mexicanos/Mexicanas in the NYC today! Actually it’s more of a beer company sponsored holiday for los gringos but What the Infierno, it’s a big Spanglish Sunday in our multicultural city. Yo, speaking of spanish, check out José Parlá above rocking the installation he did with JR on a wall in Chelsea.  And speaking of JR, the Times Square excitement continues till Friday so head on over to tourist central and be a part of it and a volunteer will help you get your mug turned into a piece of street art. Also keep your eyes open for news of his trip this week to Rikers Island. Bro, we weren’t there, we’re too scared to even think of it.  But we did get to hang out with visiting Tunisian/Parisian calligraphic Street Artist El Seed this week while he was hitting up a wall and we’ll show you that action soon.

HUSH.  “Hush revisited this old piece in Newcastle, UK on Friday. The original piece in the same place was damaged by a huge rain storm,” says his studio manager, who described how he incorporated the damaged piece into the new one. Now it looks like the damage is going to influence his new show in LA. It turns out to be an interesting study in how work on the street can affect work in the studio.  (photo © HUSH)

Her Spice Angels portraits are part Manga, part bandes desinées, and part fashion illustration presented with all the lurid and enthralling fantasy of feminist novelist Angela Carter. These large, ambitious canvases in beguiling bright pastels will bring a balmy dollop of sunshine to The Outsiders Newcastle this January.

The brightest international talent emerging from street art takes over both The Outsiders galleries simultaneously this November for a tour de force exhibition, Unslung Heroes.

For his all-new show, Anthony Lister – consistently described as “Australia’s best contemporary artist” – has used his sketchbook featuring portraits of hip hedonistic revellers, drawn at revels he’s attended, for inspiration. The elegant and sophisticated figures in the paintings – also dubbed the ‘Party Life Series’ – may be a contrast to the obnoxiously intoxicated international youth of today. But this is exemplary of the artist’s most consistent theme: “I try to combine the highbrow and lowbrow,” says Lister, “creating analogies which allow the viewer to feel comfortable with subjects that maybe they’ve made snap judgements on before.”

On a surface level the content of Unslung Heroes marks a departure for Lister. The artist’s past trademark has been paintings of super-powered ‘grey paladin’ characters indulging in louche behaviour, more inclined to shoot laser beams from their sexual organs than their eyes or gauntlets. “The super-heroes I always described as ‘mis- guiding role models’. Well, the characters in Unslung Heroes are the products of those bad role models. Also this whole show is about people without super-powers who influence us. Super-heroes are just people in costumes after all.”

Red, black and white dictate the palette of the entire show. Across both galleries the exhibition features several large canvases at 180cm square and a wide range of mid- sized canvases at 90cm square. These are painted using charcoal, acrylic, spray paint and oils. The rare grey shades employ the neutral ‘buffing’ paste used to delete graffiti by local authorities, “stolen from the council out of necessity” says Lister. The canvases are supplemented by miniature drawings on lined notepaper using felt pen and Tippex correction fluid. “When I started making the sketches, red and black pens – plus Tippex, which I’ve always worked with – were all I had to hand. A lot of the time when I’m travelling I’ll be alone and I’ll have to meet people. Sketching them helps for that. Plus it stops me drawing all over the tables and walls.”

Sculptural installations made on site will provide an immersive experience, including a grand piano in the style of a Picasso painting, a statue of Lister’s great-grandfather cut from packing foam using hot wire, and a bronze bust of his errant uncle. “My references to my family are also on the theme of role models,” says Lister. “You can choose your role models but you can’t choose your family. Apparently my great-grandfather was respected and established. My uncle though, he’s not right. It’s about detachment and influence. I imagine all these people in the paintings have uncles… and great- grandfathers.”

This is the first time both Outsiders exhibition spaces have been given over to one artist since David Choe’s UK debut in 2008. Get under the influence of Anthony Lister’s intoxicating artwork at Unslung Heroes this autumn.

About the artist

33 year-old Anthony Lister is hailed as the most compelling artistic talent coming out of Australia today. He has exhibited internationally to considerable acclaim, and been featured in Art Collector’s 50 Most Collectable Australian Artists. His 2007 painting Spider Woman recently sold at Lawson-Menzies auction house for just under AU$20,000, a personal record.

Anthony began his artistic career painting “awful” (in his own words) graffiti graduating to abstract landscapes on electricity junction boxes. A prolific worker he exhibits several times a year, consistently at Miami’s Art Basle festival. His most recent show in his home country took over an abandoned brothel, and an eponymous show earlier in 2012 in California featured ballerinas in group sex with dingoes.

Stormie Mills in Melbourne

Stormie Mills has a solo show “Peoples and Places 2012” at the Metro Gallery in Melbourne, Australia that’s open to everybody and Mr. Mills will delight you with his funny, industrious little characters done mostly in monochrome palette. Also, it was snowing at the opening Wednesday. Kind of stormy.

ROA at StolenSpace “Hypnagogia” (London)

With his current show, now on view at the StolenSpace Gallery in London, ROA will demonstrate how you can be asleep and awake at the same time. His solo show “Hypnagogia” opens today to the general public and offers a dissected view of ROA’s fantastic world of animals and beasts. Herakut “Loving the Exiled” at 941 Geary (San Francisco)

Herakut, the indefatigable German collective are a busy duo with an impressive craft and a mastery of the can and paint brushes. Never compromising their artistic output regardless of their environment or medium they set their collaborative standards high with an output rich in earthy colors. Their palette of ores, reds, grays, oranges, blues, browns and yellows give birth to a universe of characters that are  fantastic and mysterious and in pursuit of you, the spectator. In San Francisco at 941 Geary Gallery Saturday the reception will be open for the artists and you at “Loving the Exiled”.

The Outsiders, the emerging art gallery from curator-director Steve Lazarides, presents ʻWaiting 101ʼ a solo exhibition featuring the newest works from Brett Amoryʼs internationally acclaimed ʻWaitingʼ series.

American contemporary painter Brett Amory is widely considered one of the breakthrough artistic talents of the past year. He is best known for his Waiting paintings, a body of work that has spanned the last decade documenting figures and landscapes in the Bay Area. The new collection ʻWaiting 101ʼ debuts at Outsiders Gallery in Newcastle, UK on April 19th 2012.

The compositions in the exhibition focus on Amoryʼs newfound relationship with technology, and the implicit freedom it allows in his work. Delving into documentation methods which new modes of ambulatory technology offer, Amory experienced a metamorphosis in his painting preparation and application. With intimate, firsthand knowledge of the many ways that technology can affect the lives of those it touches, Amory explores the avenues itʼs opened up for him as an artist in ʻWaiting 101ʼ.

Photography applications with sophisticated software (such as Instagram) have allowed Amory to expand the scope of his series. Heʼs now able to capture critical moments that strike him as they unfold. “With my iPhone, I always have a camera on hand. Iʼm able to capture what I experience day in day out,” he says. “Every morning I wake up and walk to the café for a cup of coffee. On the way I see the same people following their own routines. New technology allows me to document these people as they go about their lives. Capturing the people I see in my neighbourhood on film and later on canvas, is really a documentation of what I do and see on a daily basis. This body of work aims to give the viewer a look into my own experience. Hopefully it opens up a deeper personal exchange between myself and the viewer.”

Inspiration has never been so easy to manipulate and document. Amory expertly wields the tools available to him, with the intent of maintaining and evolving the series that has garnered him international acclaim. Prior to Amoryʼs use of the camera phone, his process involved painstaking research and meticulous stake-outs at chosen locations. This was always with the hope of capturing a moment and individual suitable to his artistic vision. With the modern software now in his employ, Amory has the world at his fingertips _ as evidenced in ʻWaiting 101ʼ. His compositions show a radical departure from his historical works in their obvious spontaneity, yet remain true to his unequivocally distinct technique.

The Outsiders Gallery Presents: BORF “See Something, Say Something” (Newcastle, UK)

The Outsiders Newcastle invite you to join us on the evening of Thursday 20th October to celebrate the opening of ‘See Something, Say Something‘, the debut UK solo exhibition from young American artist BORF. The event takes place in the gallery at 77 Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, from 6 ’til 9pm.

BORF is one of the brightest young talents in art. Heʼs an angry young man in the finest tradition but his refreshing work makes insurrection delectable.

Formerly a notorious Washington DC graffiti artist, 24 year-old BORF gracefully dodges street art clichés in his gallery shows. He favours watercolours, oil sticks, drawings, sculpture, photography and film over stencils and spray paint. Whereas BORFʼs subject matter is pitiful and angry, his manner is melancholic and idealistic. Rebellion has a romance once more.

‘See Something, Say Something‘ continues the theme of impassioned revolution against a crumbling status quo. In the city we find abstracted commuters opposite transgressive kids: the former are trying to make a living, the latter trying to live.
