Images of the Week 09.18.11, during Living Walls : Albany

For the last 10 months this initiative to bring Street Art and public art to the forefront of the conversation in New York’s capital has been a boon to discourse, unusual during a period of retrenchment and an ongoing financial crises that is rocking every segment of society in the US. After years of incremental cuts to arts programming in public schools and cultural institutions at every level, it is a perfect opportunity for artists to re-assert their voices as this Street Art movement continues to evolve and develop in an organic way. Ironically this scene with roots in graffiti has shape-shifted and its emergence looks like a democratic movement, messily yet constructively filling a creative void for this new generation while the budgetary axes continue to fall around them.

As Street Artists have been installing their new works on walls around Albany these past 10 days or so, the common story one witnesses is the level of engagement of adults and kids stopping on the sidewalk, in their cars, watching the process, photographing and discussing the art, and exploring the creative process. Some folks have even become assistants to the artists, creating a sense of ownership, and yes, community. There is obviously more to this evolving story, and we’ll continue to track it.

Below are photos from photographer Jaime Rojo to give you an idea of the wealth of creativity that is alive in Albany at the moment. And we commence with our weekly interview with the street this week featuring Broken Crow, Chris Stain, Gaia, How and Nosm, Joe Iurato, LNY, Nanook, ND’A, NohJColey, OverUnder, Radical! ROA, Shin Shin, and Wing.  First, we go to church with Joe Iurato.

With Marketplace Gallery transformed into what is best classified as a sleep away art camp — complete with scattered sleeping arrangements, wheat pastes hung up on the gallery walls ready to greet the outside world, in progress portraits of some of the participating artists by White Cocoa and a healthy buzz of street art-fueled conversations late into the night — the past couple of days and nights have blurred together leading up to the debut of the Living Walls project in Albany, officially launching this weekend.

Away from the hustle and creation taking place both in the street, at the gallery and St. Joseph’s church, a conductor of sorts sits under a bridge in Rensselaer at the Art Park, overlooking Albany. The piece, as created by Clown Soldier, puts a figure in command of the happenings of the city from a detached control station. One can’t help but picture the happenings in Albany in relation to the Living Walls as beneath the futuristic bubble Clown Soldier created. The tag line that organically manifested surrounding the Living Walls in Albany — “This Is Happening In Your City” — is setting in.

Kitty corner to the Clown Soldier piece is another Living Wall where Shin Shin and Wing collaborated under the massive support of the bridge in Rensselaer. The pair got to work using a bright palate environmentally fitting for the open industrial space, creating a natural and whimsical balance on the surface of the bridge’s support.

NohJColey, Depoe and N’DA also got down in Rensselaer, working over the course of several days on large-scale pieces, bordering existing (and aging) public murals, while also bouncing in between St. Joe’s church, where Living Walls installations are coming into form from a multitude of artists, local and beyond.

Street Art Summer Hospitality in NYC – OverUnder, Irgh, N’DA, Veng & Chris (RWK)

Somebody Brought Moonshine to this Picnic

You get a chance to go out to the park this weekend and sit under a tree or throw a frisbee? It’s not that far to walk really and its good to reacquaint oneself with nature and barking dogs and deviled eggs and other weird salad creations that Aunt Majiminy always forces you to try – even though you didn’t like it the last time she forced you to try it.

But we don’t know what has been in that jug of punch at these little picnics that Overunder, ND’A and Chris and Veng from RWK have been throwing this summer. The characters, the proportions, and the mixing of elements are ever more stretched and eccentric and colorful. These kids are seriously playing with their food – mixing the olives with the jello ambrosia and spreading it on a grilled hamburger and crumbling some ranch potato chips on top.

A distant Street Art relative from Berlin named IRGH is in town this summer and these Brooklyn based artists have put down the gingham table cloth and a wicker basket of aerosol cans in multiple locations to welcome their cousin and put him to work…painting walls. We’ve been chasing them around town in Brooklyn and Manhattan and here’s the wackiness we found:

Erik Burke Captures Nick Spilling The Beans (and sweeping them up)

These days when things can seem so difficult, it’s good to remember that creative folk like you are also struggling with demons, and everybody has occasional victory.

In this brand-spanking new film, “Nick The Amazing”, artist ND’A and director Erik Burke follows a Street Artist around Brooklyn, camera in hand, and catches the manic thinker and worrier as he goes about making art, frantically talking and painting and cutting and pasting and performing verbal and physical stunts. The resulting urban pastiche is a welcome poem on the inner and outer life of an artist and by extension, a filmmaker. Or, as Erik says,  “A manic portrait of Brooklyn based artist ND’A that follows him as he creates artwork in the streets and spills the beans at work, literally.”

We looked over the last year to take in all the great projects we were in and fascinating people we had the pleasure to work with. It was a helluva year, and please take a look at the highlights to get an idea what a rich cultural explosion we are all a part of at this moment.

The new year already has some amazing new opportunities to celebrate Street Art and artists. We are looking forward to meeting you and playing with you and working with you in 2011.

Mid Summer Fun With Overunder, Labrona, White Cocoa, Gawd and ND’A

Remember the lazy days of summer when we were kids, running around in August with our pack of friends making up sh*t to avoid boredom and to look busy so our parents wouldn’t make us do chores?

The excitement of July has passed and August will last forever.

All the stickball, hide-n-seek, and doctor games have gone a little old, like the garbage piled on the curb. The days of August require more creativity to keep us entertained: we insist on building bigger bike ramps, staging grander battles, concocting more complicated schemes that border on true mischief. Those thoughts came rushing back when we discovered the amazing art-fest that Overunder, ND’A, White Cocoa, Gawd and Labrona just smacked up.  Imaginations are running wild.

Like a rambunctious pack of happy sweaty kids they are darting around behind trees and corners, counting to 20 and announcing, “Here I come!”.  We want to be in the Secret Club of art making – where’s the tree house? Or is it a tepee? Or just somebodies older sister’s bedroom, covered with posters of Katy Perry and Young Jeezy?  This new output is generous and inspiring. In a recent interview with Overunder he said “collaborations allow me to drop the draw-bridge and open up the work to new concepts, aesthetics, even accidents.” This stuff show how the draw-bridge has dropped and the concepts are skipping forth.

On the Street Art Continuum He’s Overunder.

In Jonathan Swifts Letter to a Young Poet the satirist writes at length about the daily exigencies and the less obvious qualities that will be necessary to pursue a life of letters and creativity.

“..it is to me a plain account why our present set of poets are, and hold themselves obliged to be, free thinkers.”

Outside the rigors of academia and the confines of the white box, our street artists continually challenge all of us to be free thinkers.  Of course, we’re not all going to be free. Maybe because thinking is only one route to understanding.

Among Street Artists who can suspend their limiting thoughts and embrace an inner discovery of the creative spirit, Overunder is fluid enough to explore and discover before your eyes without concern about matters that may hinder his peers. To him, process trumps product, and exploring may produce an  expertise previously unfound. The act of collaboration colors the experience in ways he could not possibly have accessed singularly. His roots in graffiti are not reason for stylistic rigidity, rather a route to other paths that may include Street Art and fine art, abstraction, absurdity, symbolism, signage.

In a grueling journey by bicycle with street artist OTHER this spring, Overunder traveled by bicycle through 7 countries in Europe with little more than a backpack and sketchbook. He stopped in small towns and hamlets after exhaustive hours of plumbing an inner world he accessed on mind-numbing rhythmic rides in silence for hours. Somewhere along the way Overunder pierced the veil of his conventional thought and opened a portal for his creativity. Since returning to New York, he’s discovered brand new work that is flowing without judgment, and he is reveling it it’s direction without questioning it. A free thinker yes, and a free spirit too.

Brooklyn Street Art: You recently returned from a trip across Europe. For seven weeks you pedaled your way through seven countries in your bike. Was that trip the inspiration for your new art?
Overunder:
The trip definitely exposed me to a new way of working and inspired me but I can’t quite pinpoint where these new figurative works came from. On the surface it makes sense where these pieces came from. I mean I’m on this crazy bike ride with OTHER, a guy that has mastered portraiture and creates phenomenal situations where life-like characters are decked out in beautifully crafted patterns and goofy demeanors but, to me, my new works are more connected to graffiti.

The new pieces on paper are actually letter studies in the guise of nudes. I use traditional graffiti and signage as my muse to paint these spontaneous and dirty translations that take on human form. I’ve never been one into nudes or figurative work but these pieces came out of somewhere inside of me and I’m the type of person that believes in chance, serendipity, and all the hogwash of following where the wind blows you; such as biking across Europe with a sleeping bag and a mean streak.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-Quote-OverUnder-mother-loverBSA: You are now drawing and painting males and females nudes. Do you use a live model or are you painting from your imagination?
Overunder: All the new work is not from live models or photos or even really my imagination but my hand. I don’t know if that makes too much sense but what I’m getting at is a looser, gestural, non-overworked or over-thought process.

Painting should be fun so I try to treat it playfully. The pieces are excuses to loosen up and laugh at myself. Coming from a graffiti background will tighten ones’ bolt, most likely strip most of ’em, so what I love about these new wheat pastes is that they balance my two worlds while giving me incentive to get up.

BSA: With the colorful head portraits you are collaborating with ND’A. Many artists shy away from collabs. You seem to thrive doing them. Why?
Overunder: I think collaborations are important for artists, and people in general, to understand themselves. When I work by myself I may tend to have a higher output and tailor the work to exactly how I see it in my mind but the work is more closed. It’s like working behind a castle wall. For me, collaborations allow me to drop the draw-bridge and open up the work to new concepts, aesthetics, even accidents. The pieces with ND’A are testament to that and we bounce a lot of ideas off of each other. I’m excited to see where he takes his work in the next year and it’s a pleasure to merge our styles.  In some ways each collaboration is an extension of oneself, almost more like a separate personality, that you can let run its course or its mouth.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-Quote-OverUnder-residencyBSA: You lived briefly in San Francisco. What’s the difference, at this time in your life as an artist from living in SF and living in NYC?
Overunder: I can’t really speak generally about the difference but for me personally SF is a dead city. I grew up in Reno and would go to SF in the early 90’s when it was crushed. There were abandoned buildings, foundations, tunnels, you name it. It was all up for grabs and it was a graffiti writer’s paradise. That city erased its graff-cosmetics and replaced it with an urban-tummy tuck and facelift. You can still find good work there but I believe that a city has a responsibility to an artist. A city needs to nurture a person like a mother or a lover. It needs to inspire them and afford them places to explore, run wild, and f*ck sh*t up a little. You can do that a bit in SF but it will be a one-course meal and you’ll still be hungry when you’re through. At least that’s my take on it after moving to NYC. I think NYC is the best unadvertised residency program an artist could ever have. It’s got a constant flow of new work on the streets, visiting artists, and resident artists. Rent is affordable when you get out a bit and the further out you get, the more it forces you to explore the city. SF was just too expensive, obsessed with food, and like the try-hard little brother of NY. The big apple has fermented and is intoxicating with absurd realness.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-Quote-OverUnder-LickBSA: Are you being inspired by other artists now or by music to do your work?
Overunder: There are so many artists that inspire me but just the other day I was walking through Brooklyn and thinking that my favorite artists are my close friends. CASH4 inspires me with his work ethic, bluntness, and invented visual language. OTHER inspires me with his proclivity to travel, storytelling, and use of the word “wicked” in most sentences, ha! READ MORE inspires me with his typography and lifestyle. Adriana Valdez Young influences my drive to have fun while being smart about it. The list is long but the ones on the top are buZ blurr, Matthias Wermke, ADAMS, Broken Crow, JoinsOne, NohJColey, and Specter. As far as music I’m on a kick of Reno bands like Bindle Stiffs, Molesters, and the Frontiersmen.

BSA: How important is it for an artist to take risks?
Overunder: If art was baking, risks are like the eggs and flour of art-making. Now I’m not trying to make some Vegan cupcakes or some bullsh*t like that; I’m talking about fried-chicken-and-waffles-at-5a.m.-art. For me personally, I wouldn’t have a lick of work to show for if I didn’t take risks.  It’s not something one should really discuss or think about, it just is part of the whole picture.

People take shits, artists take risks.
