Says Will Work For Good, “We worked with Eric Wareheim on the aesthetic direction for his video for Major Lazer’s “Pon De Floor” featuring some of NY’s raddest dagga dancers. We wanted to take them off the typical club floor and put them on more mundane floors in an imaginary neighborhood where they could go about their business in private. All of the home environments were created as large paintings which were then photographed and transformed into a bizarre real estate fly-through by the dudes at Fatal Farm. Additionally we created a series of vector patterns used for the “otherworlds” featured throughout the video. All in all a sick mix of low/high tech and Eric’s always awesome visions.”

Brooklyn Filmmaker Collective “Cinema Set Free” produced this great video about the celebration of Street Art in New York called “Street Crush”. Thank you Antonio, Lawrence, Melissa, and Demitri of “Cinema Set Free” for your talents.

BrooklynStreetArt.com and AlphaBeta Art Space hosted a fun street art show with 43 street artists, 4 burlesque performers, and a kissing booth.  Working around themes of “Love, Sex, and the Street”, well-known street artists alongside relative whipper-snappers dug deep for fresh takes on gritty street ardor.

Vinny Cornelli shoots Crosby Street in NYC

This week photographer Vinny Cornelli shows us a few images from one spot in Gotham that gets hit with some regularity, and then destroyed and re-hit – and always visited by street art followers.

It’s entertaining how abandoned places on the street turn into a “venue” over time. Then, like Elton John taking residency at Ceasars Palace, one or two street artists seem to gravitate to the same spot again and again, nonplussed by the destruction of their last piece.

This spot on Crosby street has been a regular showcase for Haculla, a tripped out pop culture commentator and comedian who weaves criticism with private stories in bold splashes of fluorescence, black and white photos of celebs re-doctored, and thick marker freehand characters.

Of course it all gets piled on by others as part of the “conversation of the street”, and in these layers you can see Matt Siren, Cake, Feral, among others.

Cornelli pumps up the saturation to give the chaos a campy quality and lets the decrepitude dazzle.

MF Gallery has been in the forefront of NYC’s Underground Pop Art Scene for the past six years. Artists / curators Martina Secondo Russo and Frank Russo opened the first MF Gallery in the L.E.S. in June 2003, when the neighborhood still had a bit of its underground flavor. MF Gallery quickly became a meeting point where all kinds of misfit artists, freaks, and art collectors could enjoy new art, with surprise appearances by Zombies, Monsters or Mega-Sized Robots playing Death Metal!

Five years later, due to space restrictions and increasing gentrification, MF Gallery closed the doors on its L.E.S. location. But Martina and Frank have kept busy in the meantime, curating shows in alternative spaces around the city, and even opening an MF Gallery overseas, in Martina’s hometown of Genoa, Italy. Now the duo are returning to the Big Apple with a  bigger and badder MF Gallery, (A.K.A. The “Mighty” Fortress MF) once again pioneering an up and coming neighborhood- this time the underground arts area of Gowanus, Brooklyn.

The first show in the new space will be MF Gallery’s Seventh Annual Halloween Art Show. With artwork that is dark and scary, while still maintaining a Pop Art sensibility, this is a yearly group show that MF Gallery has kept up since the very beginning. This year’s Halloween Themed Art was created by a group of International artists such as:  Joe Simko, Ed Repka, Sarah Sheil, Scott Holloway, The Death Head, Dennis McNett, Matt Siren, Nicole Steen, Mark Riddick, Aaron Tompkins, Mary Doyle, El-Rana, Martina Secondo Russo, Frank Russo, and others; many of whom will be present at the Opening.

The Opening Party / Halloween Costume Party will be on Saturday, October 24th from seven to ten PM. Admission is FREE and open to All Ages. Refreshments will be served to a punk rock / heavy metal soundtrack. All  guests who come dressed in a Halloween Costume will get FREE BEER all night!

MF Gallery is located at 213 Bond Street (between Butler and Baltic Streets) in Brooklyn, NY. The Gallery can be easily reached by Subway- Take the F or G trains to Bergen Street, (Exit at Bergen and Smith, walk 2 blocks east on Bergen street. Turn right on Bond street. Walk south on Bond street for 3 blocks.) the A to Hoyt/ Schermerhorn, (Exit at Schermerhorn and Bond. Walk South on Bond street for 8 blocks.) or take or take the R train to Union Street. (Exit at Union and 4th ave. Walk west on Union for 3 blocks. Turn Right on Bond street. Walk North on Bond street for 4 blocks.) The new MF Gallery itself will be an ongoing work of art. Murals by MF Gallery artists are planned for the hallways and a giant skull will be constructed to adorn the facade of the building. Mom and Popism Brings the Street to the Roof

Tuesday night the summer air was heavy and thick, after an “ozone alert” day in New York drove most sensible people inside corner delis to slide open the icecream case and stare at popsicles for a few minutes, cooling off in the process.  Thankfully there is always the roof!

Billi Kid led a cadre of 28 street and graffiti artists up the stairs above Gawker’s plush and well-appointed offices to host an unusual show called “Mom and Popism”. It was officially a press preview but there were about 150 people, cocktails, fancy snacks, a DJ, and even a few high-class prostitutes, but they came in with us.

Aside from the impressive list of participants, what makes this show remarkable is the use of Jim and Karla Murray’s photographs of New York “mom and pop” storefronts, blown up to nearly their original size, then carefully appointed with work of the artists in such an integrated way that it’s as if they brought the sidewalk up to the 4th floor.

One of the street artists, Royce Bannon, was on hand at the preview to talk about his experience;

BSA: How was it putting your piece up on a photograph of a storefront?
Royce: Uh, it was interesting. It was alright, it was fun, it was cool. I was in and out really fast.

BSA: Where you concerned that it wouldn’t really look like the street?
Royce: Actually I was concerned about what material they were going to use because I didn’t know what kind of paint to bring. I like Jim and Karla’s photography anyway so I would have done whatever they wanted.

BSA: Does this particular monster have a name?
Royce: Penny, because she’s got penny eyes. Like remember on PeeWee Herman, remember the Penny?

The night breeze was a relief, Jim and Karla were gamely signing copies of their book “Storefront: The Disappearing Face of New York”, artists were signing and creating pieces in each other’s copy of the book, and there was a fair amount of posing.  The guests standing in front the storefronts created more than one or two double-takes because you could easily be transported to the streetscape without realizing they were photographs.

There will be a public showing of the installation on the 15th and we’ll be talking to Jim and Karla and Billi the Kid in upcoming posts, but first here’s a quick slideshow of behind-the-scenes makeing of the show from Mr. Kidd.

Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York is a breathtaking visual guide to New York City’s cultural heritage, with special emphasis on the historic streets and ethnic shops that have defined its many neighborhoods. Meticulously photographed, its powerful images of time-worn institutions will be printed at close to life-size scale and installed on the Gawker Media roof, becoming canvases on which select graffiti and street artists are invited to leave their indelible marks. The result will be a unique impression of a New York City that seems to be fading with each passing day. Our cultural and economic landscape will be called into question, the role of art, particularly graffiti and street art, will be subject to reinterpretation.

Curated by Billi Kid, MOM & POPism brings together graffiti and street artists to create new artworks on top of the Murray’s photographs. The collaborating graffiti and street artists represent some of the most notable artists in the street art community and the media at large.  These include Blanco,  Buildmore, Cake,  Celso, Cern, Chris  (RWK), Crome, Cycle, David Cooper, Destroy & Rebuild, Enamel Kingdom, Goldenstash, Infinity, Kngee, Lady Pink, Matt Siren, Morgan Thomas, Peru Ana Ana Peru, Plasma Slugs, Royce  Bannon, Shai R. Dahan, Shiro, The Dude Company, Tikcy, Under Water Pirates, Veng (RWK), Zoltron and Billi Kid.

MOM & POPism will be open to public on Saturday, August 15th from noon to 4 p.m. Additional exhibition viewings are available by appointment throughout August.

Invader Covers the Beatles and the Clash

Technology has an integral effect on contemporary culture – and it’s changes continue to change us individually – the new stuff always sucks us in.  Remember radical new Friendster a few years ago and how your actual friend Clyde Fromage was nearly wetting himself because he had all these virtual friends on the computer and you thought he was raving mad and a shallow idiot? Did you just check Twitter twice during the previous sentence?

A lot of today’s street artists grew up with video games around and they have a romantic nostalgia for the 8-bit characters of the “early” age of joysticks and chords and 2-color screens. For example Matt Siren bases his ghost-girl on his formative years with Pac Man.

Reaching back to that same nostalgic simplicity, the street artist Invader references the 1978 Atari video game that featured Space Invaders.  The pointillism of his countryman Seurat a hundred years earlier was updated by Invader when he began putting mosaics up in the streets of Paris in the late 1990s. The irony lies in the unique choice of medium – the tile; as old as fire urns, at once mass-produced and hand-hewn, makes up the “bit”.
This month Invader will be showing his new work, and his choice of medium is again unusual, but not out of character.  The Rubik’s Cube was a mind-stumping 3-d mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 that became a “hot” toy for kids around the same time as the Space Invader video game.  You can see pretty quickly why this toy is a turn-on to an artist like Invader.  In the video below, Invader pays homage to famous covers of vinyl album, a technology that has since been digitized too.
