Street Artist Phlegm from Sheffield (GB) was passing through New York this week and took a little time to add his character to a wall that Know Hope from Tel-Aviv painted in early March in NYC. Says Phlegm, “I couldn’t pass the opportunity to add one of my characters giving his a helping hand.”  Our geography skills aren’t too strong but this work connects 3 continents, doesn’t it? Color, Geometry and Pattern On The Streets

Art from the streets has been heralding a new eye-popping geometric disorder that can now fairly be called a movement. With roots in recent art history and the rhythms of the street, artists are giving themselves over to pungent color, pattern, grid inspired line, and a sharp edged abstraction. No one can say what has moved the conversation toward this aesthetic – it all mimics the repetitive patterns that are found in nature as well as the cool symmetries programmed by human industry. These modern alchemists from across the globe are somehow pumping the Street Art scene with an oxygen-rich supply of lifeblood and a variety of possible directions to explore.

An uncanny blending of the cans, both the graffiti tradition and the Street Art practice each find common ground to be a place where tagging and Pop irony all dissolve together into form and shape. On walls around cities where these two practices were once polarized, we’re seeing that everybody can drop their guard and just paint, bro.

In these images collected by photographer Jaime Rojo over the last couple of years, you can see elements of mid 20th century modernism, sci-fi fantasy, retro-futurism, imperfect folk patterning, and the distinct echoes of Wild Style. The common thread in this new discovery of graphic geometry is not just what it is, but as it pertains to art on the street, also what it’s not.

XCIA “Street Artist Unite” (NYC)

Photographer Hank O’Neal AKA XCIA opened a solo show “Street Artists Unite” this week in the East Village at The Dorian Gray Gallery. Of particular interest are the collaborations: Hank’s photos of Street Artists stretched across a frame and painted on by some of the current crop. Be sure to check out the one of a Richard Hambleton piece on the street that has been re-faced by Jean-Michel Basquiat and now accompanied by Chris from Robots Will Kill. Gives you a sweet brain freeze to contemplate it. The show is meant to highlight the photographic work of XCIA on the street and accompanies this springs roll-out of his book XCIA’s STREET ART PROJECT: The First Four Decades.

“Letters From America” at Black Rat (London)

Yesterday’s US Supreme Court ruling on the health care legislation that BIG MONEY has fought tooth and nail against in the US highlights the relevance of this show opening on July 4th at Black Rat Gallery. Street Artists/Graffiti Artists RISK, Ron English, SABER, and TrustoCorp participate in this show with SABER leading the way with 3 canvasses, including “The Flag Of The National Health Service”, shown here.  The graffiti artist knows of what he speaks – the current US corrupted for-profit healthcare system has deemed the artist “uninsurable”, epilepsy be damned.

“The Crest Hardware Art Show” 2012 Edition (Brooklyn)

And this is the time of the year where the intersection of hardware and art comes in to play the right way (not that hardware, Nick). Joe Franquinha and Co. know how to put on a party for all ages and creeds. Come out this Saturday from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm to Williamsburg and enjoy an art show in his family’s hardware store: “The Crest Hardware Art Show”. This art show should be taken as a model for all small family owned business that want to give back to the community and make art part of the everyday experience. In addition to the art show, Joe brings in bands and food in the courtyard and all proceeds go to help a local little museum, The City Reliquary Museum.

Bob Bar Presents: Pamela Castro AKA Anarkia Boladona “The Myth” A Solo Exhibition (Manhattan, NYC)

Inspired by the classic existentialist text The Second Sex (Le Deuxième Sexe) by French feminist scholar Simone de Beauvoir, Brazilian graffiti artist Anarkia Boladona’s exhibition The Myth interprets the various stereotypes mythologizing the female “other.” Focusing on the relationship between sexuality and gender, Boladona depicts recognizable religious figures (such as Eve), and then counters, complicates, and compliments them with empowering mythological figures of her own creation.

Panmela Castro is an activist artist whose social policy work, primarily focused on gender equality, provides the core inspiration for the content of her provocative paintings. With her work, Castro challenges patriarchal notions of public space as related to sexism, sexuality, subjectivity, and power relations. She has a BFA from the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and is currently in the Master of Arts program at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. She has received numerous awards including the Hutúz Prize for Graffiti Artist of the Decade, the 2012 Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation Award for Extraordinary Women, and the Vital Voices Global Leadership Human Rights Award. In 2012, Newsweek Magazine nominated Panmela, alongisde Brazilian President Dilma Roussef, as one of the “150 Women Shaking the World.” With years of experience writing graffiti and fighting for women’s rights, Panmela has been invited to paint in cities across the globe, including but not limited to: Berlin, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Paris, Prague, New York, and Toronto. www.panmelacastro.com. Rede Nami seeks to promote human rights whilst, and by, strengthening the artistic, intellectual, and professional skills of women living in favelas. Nick Walker Loves NY

I don’t want to say that New Yorkers are blasé, but you pretty much have to flip over backwards and walk like a spider while juggling watermelons and singing “God Save the Queen” in a clown suit before most people even turn their heads, let alone break their gait. Bristol based and globally known Street Artist Nick Walker spent hours on New York’s streets last week putting up some new stencils in his signature style and as usual, New Yorkers took it all in stride.

It’s frickin’ Nick Walker, people!  And he loves New York and the never ending parade of oddness and drop dead gorgeousness that you encounter just hanging on the sidewalk. With his loyal guard and court jester Stu on hand to hold down a stencil and to chat with the ladies and entertain the kids, Nick sprayed his way around Chelsea and the Lower East Side with some new characters, along with one familiar bowler-hatted fella.

And truthfully, there were many people stopping to chat and kids especially want to get the low-down on how all this stencil stuff takes place. They want details. Once again, expression of the creative spirit on the street provides a common ground for the exchange of ideas, opinions, and sideways glances.

Images of the Week 06.03.12

Summer jumped off with fires ablaze this week as Street Artists and all other manner of related plastic arts activity began flaring all over the place. It helps that finally the epicenter of Street Art has officially relocated to Bushwick years after Ad Hoc Gallery announced it’s arrival. Of course it’s also in Red Hook and Greenpoint and LIC and Ridgewood and Bed Stuy and even, dare we say it, Williamsburg.

But hot damn if we didn’t have more fun this week in Williamsburg watching a couple of leggily mincing models down by the waterfront kicking their shapely gams into the air and grasping the entire island of Manhattan between their feet (check out the coda photo at the end for a lick). It was extra fun because only 10 years ago this location was a garbage strewn dump where people went to get high and have sex in the wild brush and watch tall-bike sparring matches and the City didn’t even care about it. On a hot day you might find two portly Polish women in their 60s wearing wire bras and sunning themselves on plastic chaise loungers – in fact we used to call it the Polish Riviera. Now this is a public park created for shiny NYU students to play sports in and get ripped abs and clever “location scouts” have “discovered” it so it was especially fun to find this fashion shoot happening here and have one of the overheated stylist queens march over and try to shoo us away while snapping the free shoe show. Try.
