Looks like the Yankees could have used Joe Biden last night. “Who is this grandpa man?”, said my homey Ikbar behind the counter at the news stand, irritated that the Vice President has to hog half the cover of the New York Post from Derek Jeter. Guess the Scranton Slugger was knocking them out of the wrong park for some New Yorkers last night.

Also, anybody know why there are 10 TV vans with their saucers rotating on top and kleig lights at the end of their extended electronic probes blinding innocent semi-sleeping commuters walking by the Marcy projects in Brooklyn this morning? Saw Blondy McBlonderwig with perfect teeth and fishbowl eyes shrieking in a trench coat in front of the camera on the way to the M train, safely behind all the “crime scene” tape.  Think the news has decided to do a story on the class war?

Bedlam in London

If you are in London this weekend and are feeling spooky and wild, nevermind that tame Madame Tussard – turn your GPS to “BEDLAM”, Lazarides new group exhibition underground in the Old Vic Tunnels. With artists including Antony Micallef, Artists Anonymous, ATMA, Conor Harrington, Dan Witz, Doug Foster, Ian Francis, Karim Zeriahen, Kelsey Brookes, Klaus Weiskopf, Lucy McLauchlan, Michael Najjar, Nachev, Tessa Farmer, Tina Tsang, Tobias Klein, War Boutique and 3D all of them working on the theme of pandemonium. Inspired by the infamous mental hospital, we were expecting to see Boris Karloff popping around the corner while appreciating scary art that experiments on your brain. Welcome.

Jaye Moon Breaks the Code (NYC)

She’s been constructing on the streets for a year or two, but her main tricks have been in the gallery for about a decade. Street and Fine Artist Jaye Moon has a new solo show titled “Breaking the Code” at the Newman Popiashvili Gallery in Manhattan so you can see where some of this Lego madness came from. Study the numbers and the text and break the code. And don’t forget to hit up Red Hook Brooklyn because Jaye Moon is also an artist in GEOMETRICKS currently on view at Gallery Brooklyn.

Moniker 2012 (London)

MONIKER ART FAIR is in full swing and open for business until this Sunday. Take a trip to The Village Underground in Shoreditch if you are interested on seeing original works of art by some Street Artists who are moving the conversation on the streets right now. Remi Rough, Penny, Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman, Ludo, Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada, Hush, C215, Ben Slow are all represented with installations and new works of art.

John Breiner at Mighty Tanaka (Brooklyn)

Not a Street Artist but seemingly always in the street mix – maybe he has a lot of Street Art friends or something because Jon Breiner has been at a lot of events over the last couple of years and we’ve had the opportunity to see his studio work evolve so here’s a shout out. Breiner might be one of those definitely underrated fine artists that you don’t pay much attention to and then BAM!, where the hell did this kid come from? A curator of shows and DJ, Breiner goes deep below still waters; Fastidious in his craft Mr. Breiner’s work gets close and personal, meticulously drawn and painted, portaits with weight intricately real and occasional surreal little stories with plots that are off center. His new show titled “Sooner or Later We All Make the Little Flowers Grow” opens tonight at the Mighty Tanaka Gallery in DUMBO.

“Street Art Live” in Da Bronx All Day Sunday

This Sunday the Sermon is at The Bronx and the Minister is SinXero.

Showing brotherly love New York style, a group of Street Artists including Army of One/JC2, Fumero, ADAM DARE, TONE TANK, Elle Deadsex, ENX, Choice Royce, Royce Bannon, See One & Danielle Mastrion, VEXTA, Mike Die, KID Lew, & ZIMAD, as well as, SinXero (SX) & colleague Bayoan will gather at Graffiti Universe for “Street Art Live”. An event to honor Iranian brothers and Street Srtists Icy & Sot.

It’s a Sunrise Service so just stay up Saturday night >> The event begins at 5:00 am until the whole block at Graffiti Universe is completely painted.

Faile Surprise : New Painting Direction at Lazarides Show Tonight

JUST ANNOUNCED: FAILE UNVEILS BOLD NEW STUFF

A new gallery show from the Brooklyn art collective Faile has just been announced at Lazarides in London and even though they say it’s not a radical departure from their recent work, we feel like it is.

Yes there will be the blocked paintings, and other quilt-like piecing together of familiar fragments of pulp and pop imagery, but the show actually features straight ahead painting. The series of faceless fashion plates of female figures on canvas and found objects bring to mind the bold patterning and mix and match style of Other and maybe the couture insouciance of Miss Buggs but it’s a raw hand-rendered warmth and the combined snippets from their established graphic vocabulary that make it solidly Faile. It’s a fresh stripped down approach and a departure from these guys who just finished the Houston Wall in Manhattan, and it already wins.

Lazarides is delighted to announce Botulism, the first solo exhibition of Brooklyn’s infamous collagist Bäst at the Rathbone Gallery. Bäst will present a collection of new works, developing past preoccupations in an exciting new direction.

Bäst’s work is inspired by the early punk flyers of London and New York, playing with a variety of 21st Century icons and appropriating imagery from a variety of media. From advertising to comic book characters, Bäst subverts the familiar and recognisable into distorted counterparts. His collages, wheat-pasted posters and paintings morph Mickey Mouse, Pinocchio and Papa Smurf into multi-eyed sexually charged portraits of their former selves. Food packaging, 50’s newspaper clippings and brand logo’s all feature as the backdrop to his vibrant, brilliantly coloured works.

Whether appearing in the doorways of downtown New York or on the walls of a gallery, Bäst’s graphic language translates into prints, paintings, collages and mixed media sculptures. His latest acrylic paintings on wood have developed the colourful repetitive patterns so often present in his collages. For Botulism expect myriad unprecedented works with that classic Bäst flavour.

Bäst recently exhibited with longtime collaborators Faile in the Greek Street gallery space, the acclaimed Deluxx Fluxx Arcade showcasing a groundbreaking display of customised arcade games pasted with a collage of the artists’ unique imagery and paired with tunes composed by post-punk art rock band Les Savy Fav.

Bäst has been an intricate part of the street art scene for the past 10 years throughout New York and Europe gaining cult status and recognition from fellow street artists. Hailing from Brooklyn, Bäst is an elusive character whose work centralizes around the art of collage.

Little is known of his work outside of what the public sees throughout New York’s urban environment but since 2003 his work has evolved and been exhibited in various exhibitions: Faile Bast Deluxx Fluxx Arcade at Lazarides, London (2010), Graffiti at Galerie du Jour – Agnes B, Paris (2009), Beach Blanket Bingo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery, New York (2009), This is China at BLVD Gallery, Seattle (2008), Ridiculousnessofitallshow at New Image Art, Los Angeles (2005) and Fancy Faile and Bast at Galerie Neurotitan, Berlin (2003).

Apart from showing in Japan, LA, Colorado, New York, London, Paris and Berlin, he’s also released a limited edition book, Revolucion De Papel, the only publication to bring his many works on the streets of New York together.

Lazarides

Working outside conventional practice and the contemporary art system, Lazarides welcomes a broad audience to an extensive exhibition programme, off-site projects and online exhibitions and collectives. Lazarides supports and develops the work of a group of artists who collectively, defy categorization.

Founded in 2006 by Steve Lazarides, Lazarides represents some of the most exciting and innovative artists working today including Antony Micallef, David Choe, JR, Vhils, Faile, Jonathan Yeo, Charlie Isoe, Conor Harrington, Ian Francis, Stanley Donwood, 3D, Invader, Kelsey Brookes, Mode 2, Todd James /Reas, Blu, Paul Insect and BAST.

The exhibition programme runs across spaces in London and Newcastle: Lazarides Rathbone, presents seven solo and group exhibitions each year, while The Dungeon on Greek Street, Soho and The Kitchen in Newcastle provide a platform for emerging talent and experimental projects by Lazarides artists.

Recently launched in July 2010, THE OUTSIDERS will become the home of publications, limited edition prints and collectable artistic ephemera as well as smaller presentations and screenings. Incorporating the online shop and the spaces on Greek Street and in Newcastle, THE OUTSIDERS will continue to welcome over ten thousand visitors annually and provide a one-stop-shop for all things outsider.

Lazarides LA is proud to introduce, EuroTrash: a stellar line up of some of the hottest European artists around.

Hailing from France, JR will bring his unique vision to Beverly Hills. Immersing himself within cultures where struggle and conflict are rife, he presents his monochromatic photographs and installations.

Renovating the urban environment much like JR, is the innovative Portugese artist Alexandre Farto aka Vhils. He manipulates a variety of surfaces to create his extraordinary vision. From the brick facade of buildings to peeling off layered flyposters, he reveals images that explore the sub-cultures and dynamism of a city.

Cork born painter Conor Harrington explores the illusion of power and the emotional side of masculinity in his large-scale paintings. Combing the fast pace of grafitti art with traditional oil painting, resulting in energetic murals of soldiers and conquerors existing within a chaotic abstracted landscape.

Antony Micallef returns to LA with his distinctive style of painting. Drawing on icons of contemporary society which both celebrate and condemn modern day living. His most recent works are built upon a profound belief in the act of brushstrokes and animals and humans merge in the happy accident of the artist’s extreme stream of consciousness.

Immortalising the individual in monumental proportions is what these exciting artist do best. Using the overlooked, misunderstood and mundane elements of our everyday, each artist captures our attention with their distinctive style and alternative approach.
