Hell’o Monster and M-City at the Urban Art Biennale in Lille, France

The Biennale Internationale d’Art Mural de Lille from the Collectif Renart is underway in this northern French city of Lille. The international mural festival held every two years boasts artists primarily from the city and region with a handful of artists from other countries.

This years installations continue from May through September, giving a generous leisurely pace without pretense to this program that features myriad styles influenced by graffiti, modern bohemian, D.I.Y., and a variety of fine art practices currently flowing in the larger street art scene.

“The guys who organized this Biennale are really working hard with a sense of generosity,” says photographer and occasional street art writer Aline Mairet of the mood in Lille. She also shares with BSA readers today her photographs of two recent walls from Poland’s M-City and the Brussels collective of Hell’O Monsters.

As it turns out, it appears that both have mined the imaginary monsters that frequent the modern mind, here at large in wooded areas. The invincible M-City is diverging from the industrial-mechanical themes that typically distinguish his massive stencil murals, here going figurative with a light beaming boulder throwing woodland dweller.

The Hell’O Monsters collective of Jérôme Meynen, Antoine Detaille, and François Dieltiens create a scene of two, dipping into mystic-folk-cartoon practices of artful representation on the Hellemme métro station. In other words, we don’t know what is going on here but it is attractive, and possibly frightful.

We Love Paris In The Spring Time! New Shots of Street Art.

When Cole Porter wrote “I love Paris in the Springtime!” in 1953 he probably was thinking of showgirls and their suitors and the wickedness of the Montmartre dance halls in the 1890s, but when photographer Sandra Hoj was in Paris last week she was thinking of aerosol paintings and paste-ups, and her enthusiasm was equal or greater to Porters.

“Five full glorious days in one of my favorite cities,” she writes when talking about her excursions into the Paris Street Art scene, saying, “Noticing street art is a party, not a job. It’s time to dance.”

Now back in Copenhagen where she blogs and writes about infrastructure, urban planning, bike parking, and trees, Ms. Hoj happily shares her newest Paris findings with BSA readers, and we thank her for it!

“I miss Paris already,” she adds.

Paris Street Art Update : “Je Suis Charlie” and “Pochoirs à Vendre”

Street Artist Combo says he was beaten for his street art advocating religious tolerance and naturally there has been a series of Je Suis Charlie variants appearing in the streets of Paris since we last checked in with this hot spot on the Street Art scene, so you know that many newly appearing works are charged with socio-political relevance. In these new images you will also see some fresh ideas from new names as well as long-term players, so those are encouraging signs of a vibrant scene as well.

You may also note an increase in the professional/commercial quality of some of these pieces and murals and begin to question how long a free-wheeling organic Street Art scene can last before low level opportunists cash in on it and turn it into a sad strip mall selling tchotchkes or derivative works by anonymous artists like a machine. Ah, capitalism, of thee we all sing.

The London scene has elements of this, so do New York and Melbourne, but we didn’t see it so obviously until photographer Geoff Hargadon returned from Paris with these excellent photos for BSA readers and gave us his account of a store he wandered into.  Enjoy his account further along in this posting.

In the mean time, long live Paris and it’s many players on the street!

Geoff’s account of his discovery in a heavily trafficked area known for Street Art in Paris recently. “Rue Déyonez is an active street for street art, with de facto legal walls on each side showing work from the most prolific Parisian artists. So I was walking up Rue Déyonez and this door was half open. I would not say it was exactly inviting but somehow I wiggled my way in. This guy named Pedro was in there with a friend, drinking tea.”

“I looked around and saw that the room was completely filled with stenciled paintings of (mostly) American figures such as Warhol, Obama, Hendrix, Marilyn Monroe, and lots of Jimi Hendrix. The smell of aerosol was intense, and I quickly concluded my host had never worn a protective mask in his working life. Pedro probably set up camp to capitalize on the flow of visitors to this concentrated display of street art. I didn’t quite catch where he was from originally and I don’t think it was France. He was certainly cordial. I poked around his rooms full of literally hundreds of stencils while he allowed me to ignore the PAS DE PHOTOS sign on the pole. I left with a (overpriced) stencil on a Paris map.”

The Street To The Auction Hammer : Jim Prigoff Gets His Artcurial Catalogue

Fine art by urban artists continues to gain interest by collectors worldwide and auctions dedicated to it are becoming more common. Artcurial has a selection of just under 200 works by mainly European and American artists who have practiced at one time (or currently) in the street, whether they have called themselves Street Artists or graffiti writers or another variant. Long time documenter, celebrated author, and public speaker on the aerosol art and the related scenes since the 1980s (at least), James Prigoff received his ARTCURIAL catalogue in the mail this week and offers us his personal observations today on BSA

During the past few years we have seen an increase in interest in Graffiti based canvases, particularly from the early NYC writers. ARTCURIAL, in Paris, has had a number of auctions in recent years supported by printed catalogues.

Despite that, I wasn’t quite prepared for the very hefty 220 page catalogue that arrived today. I believe it is the first auction that I have seen entitled “Urban Art”. Not only are there many canvases by the early train writers solidly based in the Graff culture (1981-1983), but then offshoots from that and finally what today is labeled “Urban Art”. (Mostly 2010 to the present – Graff based and other).

The early eighties saw the train writers go to canvas as some major dealers like Tony Shafrazi took on writers like Futura, but the flame quickly burned out. In Europe, however, there was more interest and a collector named Henk Pijnenburg amassed a huge collection of the NYC output, particularly from BLADE. Yaki Kornblit in Amsterdam was one of the first to have sold out shows. When I visited with him, he was opening a show for Ramellzee. Before it even opened, every canvas was tagged SOLD. A few European Museums also bought in.

By 1991 nothing had happened to increase the canvas’s value and Henk organized the “Coming from the Subway” show at the Groninger Museum in Holland. The catalogue was huge and most of the writers attended. I went there. He hoped to ignite interest and promote his collection, but really outside of Basqiuat and Haring not much happened until the last five or so years.

Two years ago, Henk sold his entire collection to a Paris collector of the art form since 2009. Many of the canvases originally purchased by Henk were offered in this auction. His Dondi “Dark Continent”, an iconic piece, listed for $25/35 thousand Euros. ($1.13 dollars to $1 Euro).

Listed from other sources were Crash for $15/20 and $20/30. A Chaz for $18/25. Seen $12/15 and $25/30 and a 2007 for $30/40. Zephyr, Futura, Toxic all in the $15/30 range. (000)

Jon One 156, who left NYC years ago to live in Paris with three modern canvases from$12/15, $15/20 and $30/40. A large Conor Harrington (Irish) for $25/30. A J.R. photo on aluminum for $25/30 !!!!! Os/Gemeos for $25/30. Shepard Fairey anywhere from $25 to $50. Retna for $15/20 and hold onto your hat, a KAWS piece (the catalogue cover) 4.5 x 6 ‘ for $120/150. (000)

Going back to my early photography when there were mostly just T-Kid 170 type tags on the streets, who could have imagined what could happen to “Vandalism” now heralded as “URBAN ART”.

BSA Special Feature: ROME in the Street and the Gallery by Dioniso Punk

The punk rock connection to graffiti is as strong as any subculture’s – or of any people who feel marginalized in effect or practice by the dominant culture preventing their voice. The narrative that graffiti belongs exclusively to Hip Hop has been posited and disproved over time; as Jesus said, “Graffitti belongs to everyone.” *

Modern French academics and intellectuals have celebrated graffiti and Street Art by way of political protest at least since the late 1960s and early 70s, first with the Situationists and later with the aesthetics and artistry of people like Ernest Pignon-Ernest and Gérard Zlotykamien.

In “Street & Gallery” we see that the need for expression, illegal and otherwise, is as urgent as ever in the Street Art scene in Rome today and for many it is a means to express opinions and philosophies that they hope will in turn push greater society forward in some way. For others it is simply to fight the stagnation.

Billed as an “unofficial video” by Dioniso Punk, the short documentary takes you into the kitchen and studio and gallery and street as a variety of artists, academics, vegetable vendors and philosophers narrate the pragmatic and the existential. Call it activism, call it a yearning for freedom, call it being generally pissed off at institutional inertia – the spirit of graffiti and it’s multiple urban art corollaries will not die. Either will arena rock and roll, despite early punk’s best wishes.

Interesting to note that the globalization of capital has not globalized all banks accounts and has thrust the xenophobia of the Italian middle class into a harsh light here, as it has elsewhere in so-called developed countries. Here we see a modern Italy struggling with ideological self-beliefs about justice and equality and wondering how they apply to a new immigrant class who has no interest in their cogitations. Moving from the educated class studio environment, the trained artist suddenly finds a social/political role, and for the first time perhaps contemplates it. Meanwhile, many in the street have never seen the inside of a studio and have a slightly different take on the state of things. Let the conversation continue.

Hendrik Beikirch: East Harbor in the Netherlands

Hendrik Beikirch traveled to Heerlen in the Netherlands to paint a new mural over three and a half days. Organized by Heerlen Murals, the wizened, troubled subject adds to the series of images ECB has been creating across many walls in the last handful of years.

“Art As A Weapon” Trailer

From Breadtruck Films, the new documentary focuses on a school in Myanmar (Burma) that teaches street art as a form of non-violent struggle. Street Artists Shepard Fairey and JR figure into the story, as does the military, art as a weapon, and art as a tool for revolution.

BSA’s Piece on “Submerged Motherlands” Acclaimed for Year

BSA with Swoon at Brooklyn Museum Sited by Huff Post Editors as Proud Moment of 2014

We’re very pleased and thankful to be included in this short list chosen by the editors of Huffington Post Arts & Culture as a story they are most proud of publishing last year.

In her introduction to the list, editor Katherine Brooks writes:

“It turns out, 365 days is hard to summarize in anything but a laundry list of seemingly disparate phenomena, filled with the good — woman-centric street art, rising Detroit art scenes, spotlights on unseen American art– and the bad less than good — holiday butt plugs, punching bags by Monet, Koonsmania. But, as a New Year dawns, we found ourselves just wanting to focus on the things that made us beam with pride in 2014. So we made a list of those things, a list of the pieces we’re proud of.”

Describing why we thought this was an important story for us we wrote:

“We loved a lot of stories this year, but this hometown Brooklyn one about a street artist with humanity mounting her first solo major museum exhibition was a special turning point — and an astounding success. For us street art is a conversation, a continuum of expression, and Swoon is always a part of it. From following her street career to her transition to international fame to witnessing this exhibition coming to fruition in person in the months leading up to the Brooklyn Museum show, it is easy to understand why Swoon still remains a crucial part of the amazing street art scene and continues to set a standard.”

We asked photographers and curators from various perspectives of street culture to share a gem with all of us that means something to them. Urban explorer and Street Art photographer Alexis Masurelle caught our eye this year with his style that doesn’t heroicize, but poetically documents the underbelly, the decay, the left traces of our human folly and industry. We didn’t know what to think when we first saw his image from 2014 of a train bombed (in both senses of the word) but then we realized that it is a perfect marriage of his styles and interests in some way. The icon of a train painted (or bombed) is burned into the minds of generations of graffiti writers thanks to images of NYC trains from the 1970s and 80s, but because of an act of terrorism, this particular train has a far sadder memory in the minds of many Parisians.

“This image was shot in a train depot in September this year, nineteen years after it was bombed in Paris. The practice of street art is for most players an illegal activity punished by law. For graffiti artists the train is one of the most sought after, often guarded and difficult to access.

This historic RER (Réseau Express Régional (regional express train)) was the subject of an attack at the Saint Michel station. The historical significance is mainly owed ​​to the fact that this train is the trace – the proof – of this. Besides being a vestige of history, this model is nearly no longer in circulation, and so it is rare to see one.”

A new Street Art team is hitting cities around the globe this year and they have disturbed some while delighting others. The mostly French collective of photojournalists named DYSTURB are wheat-pasting large reproductions of their photographs on selected streets as a way to bring the news of the world directly to passersby. “We are photojournalists who have taken onto the walls of your city to highlight stories under-covered by mainstream media,” says the group. Today DYSTURB co-director Benjamin Girette, who shot images during the Arab Spring and made a name for himself with his Instagram images of the Kiev uprising, shares with us his favorite shot of the year from the streets of his hometown.

“I took this image this summer on July 19th, 2014 in Paris. It is a demonstration for Gaza that quickly turned in to clashes with the police forces. I have a strong memory of this moment because four of my friends and colleagues were hurt during these protests. They were wounded by angry protesters, not by the police. This is something that is on the rise with many of todays protests – media correspondents are more and more often targeted for doing their work.”

Icy & Sot on a European Street Art Tour

New York’s adopted Street Art brothers Icy & Sot have been spreading their wings in Brooklyn for a couple of years since we first interviewed them upon their arrival in the US from Iran. In that time they have continued to develop their personal style and voice, which is probably strongest when they use their work to address social issues and express opinion. To say that their New York experience has been a roller coaster of good and bad fortune for these two is an understatement, including having a solo show in Manhattan, being part of a supportive art community formed by ex-pats and street artists, and a horrifying shooting in their home that left three friends dead and Sot injured.

The intensity of the experience was fed by a media frenzy, and for a few months the brothers were in a surreal state of mind. The music and art community rallied to support them and they continued working and focused on more positive endeavors, like curating a cross cultural dual show between Brooklyn and Tehran in galleries in both cities this summer.

Now for the first time the brothers were free to travel this fall and they wasted no time hopping a plane to Norway for the Nuart Festival in September and continued their trip through Switzerland, France, and Germany to paint and meet friends and (gasp) collectors. Yes, these 20-somethings who work very closely together to  conceive of and produce their work have garnered a growing following of fans in a relatively short period of time. While Icy and Sot have no plans to return to Iran in the near future, the brothers were excited to see Europe for the first time and to experience the sometimes pronounced differences in acceptance of street art and graffiti in various cities they visited.

“It was our first time traveling and painting around Europe and it was a great experience,” says Sot of their various venues which included in-town interventions and a more intricate and contextual piece high in the mountains of Switzerland. They did some normal tourist stuff of course and Icy says, “From painting in a different environments and cultures to meeting artists, people and friends, we just loved it.” Aside from the many free-wheeling installations, including painting, stencil work, and bus shelter takeovers, they still are relishing the huge wall they did about homelessness in Stavanger, Norway they say. “We were so honored to be part of Nuart Festival,” says Sot, “which is our all time favorite festival.”

Could We Kill a Panda The Same Way We Kill a Bull? Michael Beerens in Paris

The Bullfight! The historic tradition! The glorious danger of a confused and raging bull ready to charge at his tormentor. The bulging manhood of the Matador as he proudly steps around the coliseum in his ornate and regal costumery!

And now ladies and gentlemen, the Pandafight! Watch as the athletic and handsome slayer taunts the raging Panda with a red flag and runs quickly away! See how he stabs with colorful blades into the panda’s back, thrusting his sword between the shoulder blades!

On a wall in Paris’ Chinatown (Belleville) Street Artist Michael Beerens re-imagines the national animal of China standing in the place of the traditional bull, ready to be killed slowly and publicly to entertain the assembled fans.

“I noticed that in the eyes of man, all animals do not have the same value,” says Bereens, who challenges an ingrained thought pattern that finds the cuddly cute photogenic ones more valuable in some cultures than others. “For example, crushing a spider is good but a ladybug is saved; rats are killed but we like squirrels and hamsters.”

To complete this wall, which he says he did not have permission for, Bereens simply showed up to it with a lot of equipment and paint cans.  He says some people stopped to thank him for putting color on the walls, and others stopped to take photos of the wall, of him, of themselves in front of the wall.  “It’s a free exchange,” he says, “I try to convey a human message but I have nothing to sell except my ideas.  I’m not trying to sell Coca Cola,” he explains.
