Like a lot of the artists crawling around Bushwick, Brooklyn today, Street Artist duo Skewville were once hustling to get a show in a gallery or “art space” – only to find out that few people showed up, understood their concept, and almost nobody bought it. A testament to youth and bravado and their persistence, they eventually wore us down.
Now as he’s rummaging through his crates and boxes of Skewville memorabilia, Ad Deville has a wry smile on his face. DeVille, along with his twin Droo, has made a lot of work since they first started throwing their screen printed jig-sawed shoes (dogs) up over electrical wires around New York and the world in the 90s. This week Ad’s a busy man again at Factory Fresh gallery as he’s preparing for their joint birthday party, because he’s dragging it all back out and nailing it to a wall.
“I feel nostalgic of course but at the same time as I pull old stuff out I realized how much initially people didn’t care, how much people didn’t get it. We hardly ever sold one piece at the first shows. Instead of feeling bad that made us work harder to come out with different ideas and make new stuff”
Their 80th Birthday Retro Retrospective Friday night will be an opportunity for you to tell Ad and Droo how much you totally “got it” from the very beginning. You’ll see things like a metal version of the dogs they once experimented with, a door slammed with stickers from the gallery he and Ali Ha had on Orchard Street on the Lower East Side, and examples of their newer hardware inspired sculptures.
As he’s pulling trunks, shopping carts, crates and boxes out of the basement and poking his head inside the walk-in freezer looking for “vintage” Skewville pieces, you can see that their output throughout the years has been prolific and the mess of creativity makes you feel overwhelmed with joy as well and alert to the need for hand sanitizer.
When we asked him how felt opening all of those boxes he remarks,”When I was 28 I felt old and bitter. Now that I’m older I feel like 28 but I’m not bitter. Being bitter is not productive.” So there you have it. He’s no longer bitter. Just really old.
Skewville
The boisterous Skewville Twins turn 80 years old combined and they are inviting you to come and celebrate with them at Factory Fresh in Bushwick for an evening of art, fun and mischief.
With great pleasure Factory Fresh presents Skewville’s 80th Birthday: A Retro Retrospective to celebrate the art and life of this duo. The Skewville twins has been making things since birth, from building club houses in the 70’s, graffiti in the 80’s, then on to commercial ventures in the 90’s. In the past 13 years, they have been making innovations on the street and in the art galleries with their stylized work and installations. Best known for their wooden sneaker mission ” When Dogs Fly” which continues to evolve and has grown to many new cities and editions.
This past year they returned from there final european show in the UK at High Roller Society and did a coast to coast tour showing at Pawn Works in Chicago, Black Book in Colorado & White Walls in San Francisco. They have also done a large scale murals for Brooklyn’s North Side Festival As well as Creating The Bushwick Art Park and making an outdoor Prototype at the New Museum. The Bushwick neighborhood summer favorite for 2011 was when Skewville painted an entire building to look like boombox.
As the largest collectors of their own work. Skewville will showcase past favorites such as the original giant “Hype” signs from Wooster Collective’s 11 Spring Street show in 2006. as well as the Skewville “Lawnmower Stamper” that prints out ” Keep on Grass” and The Secret Laboratory Book Shelf Door from Basement AIr Show in 2005. Also featuring their wooden sneaker archives from 1999 to present as well as recent artworks from the past few years will also be available and on display. Skewville’s 80th Birthday

As we start a new year, we say thank you for the last one.
And Thank You to the artists who shared their 11 Wishes for 2011 with Brooklyn Street Art; Conor Harrington, Eli Cook, Indigo, Gilf, Todd Mazer, Vasco Mucci, Kimberly Brooks, Rusty Rehl, Tip Toe, Samson, and Ludo. You each contributed a very cool gift to the BSA family, and we’re grateful.
We looked over the last year to take in all the great projects we were in and fascinating people we had the pleasure to work with. It was a helluva year, and please take a look at the highlights to get an idea what a rich cultural explosion we are all a part of at this moment.
The new year already has some amazing new opportunities to celebrate Street Art and artists. We are looking forward to meeting you and playing with you and working with you in 2011.

Tara McPherson New Cheap Print “Searching for Penguins”
That’s all you really have to say to get people excited these days. And today in London a new piece by the anonymous Darth Vader in a hoodie debuts at a group show called “Marks & Stencils”. It also features Greg Haberny, a very strong and prolific artist showing in Brooklyn for a few years now.

SACE Tribute on Houston Wall
“The ever-changing graffiti wall on East Houston Street took another turn Tuesday, with taggers covering the massive canvas with a tribute to a late Lower East Side artist.
Witnesses said a graffiti crew arrived at the wall, located at the corner of the Bowery, Tuesday morning and proceeded to cover the previous piece by street artist Barry McGee in large black letters spelling SACE — the tag name of artist Dash Snow, who died of an apparent drug overdose in 2009.”
The block party in Bushwick provided by Factory Fresh Gallery and the app called All City turned out a number of new Brooklyn Street Art pieces on a block long installation, complete with friends, fans, and a taco stand. Included in the offering was this surprise collab with Faile and Bast, auspiciously appearing the morning of the event like a pre-Christmas gift wrapped in razor wire. The news of the piece travelled fast and while Ad Deville couldn’t find his red carpet, he did post a velvet rope to hold back the crowd. That didn’t stop Futura from climbing on top of his car to get the perfect shot.
And here we move to a British invasion of sorts with Geishas and Primates from Hush and K-Guy respectively. XAM has been installing some pretty cool looking bird houses around town equipped with LED lights on their porches that illuminate when the sun sets. Infinity and VUDU’s pieces for the Showpaper box project adds to the conversation on the street with a beaming signal tower atop the box.
K-Guy’s recent “Primates” piece, including this one that appears to be pretty fresh, have been appearing around Brooklyn suddenly. Apparently its meaning is reference to the growing perception of hypocrisy in the Catholic church, particularly as pertains to pedophilia coverups, its position on contraception, gay rights, among other issues.
And finally the 800 pound pink gorilla in the group, Samson from Albany, began his audacious cityscape project directly beside his hero/shero Sten & Lex. The neighbor next door liked it so much Samson will be back to continue the piece – which is part of a much grander scale piece on urban decay, development, and renewal that he hopes to stage in the future.
“I’ve always been an artist in some form, or certainly always creative – it’s a lifestyle, I don’t think you choose art, its something you do, it is life. Well my life,” Hush explains to BSA. This week he’s been putting work up in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and tonight is his NYC solo exhibition debut at The Angel Orensanz Foundation For Contemporary Art. We’re not missing it.

Rae McGrath at Brooklynite Saturday: Unconventional Conviction
The gallery is completely re-painted and Rae is standing on his head waiting for it to dry. Unconventional is right – the last two years as a ringmaster and co-proprietor of Brooklynite Gallery have put him squarely in the middle of a tornado of punchy Street Art and a panoply of personalities – always with a very defined focus, high level of quality, and total conviction. As a curator, marketer, and host, this modern carny is a font of new ideas and angles, backed up with straight up elbow grease.
Now Rae is taking a minute or two to let people see what snaps his elastic mind when it comes to making art. You can see how the curator and the artist merge in this poppy geometric collection; Bast, Miss Bugs, Dain, Ana Peru Peru Ana, Various & Gould and others each have a shout out. It’s all here; the dense graphic punch, the vibrant blue collar reverence, the deliberate slicing and refracting off a funhouse mirror ball. Always a surprise and always a reward, artist Rae MaGrath’s debut is bound to be a funkadelic bootilicious jam.

James Brown was the Godfather of Soul, Aretha is the Queen of Soul, Michael was the King of Pop, and Jennifer Lopez is a judge on a TV talent show. Now we learn that one of New York’s first recognized street artists, having blanketed the L.E.S. with disconcerting shadow figures in the 1980s, is actually called “The Godfather of Street Art”. Thank Allah you don’t have to be the one in charge of handling these honorariums because you know that has got to be a thankless task. On the occasion of “Richard Hambleton New York”, The Dairy Gallery released this video.

Brooklyn Street Artists Paint 200 Foot Wall, Burning Candy Crew Debut Film at Bushwick Block Party
All City, the international street art and graffiti app, is partnering up with Factory Fresh gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn to open up 200 feet of wall and turn it over to Brooklyn street artists. Chris Stain, Gaia, Skewville, Imminent Disaster and several guests artists will be tackling the project. Tek33 and Dscreet of London’s Burning Candy crew will also be in town painting and premiering their film Dots.

This weekend isBushwick Open Studios — three days of on the street, in-your-face, participatory and community-minded art events located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The festival is hard to miss: there are more than 300 shows registered this year, and the weekend generally has a party vibe. Everyone’s out, using Arts in Bushwick’s maps to get from place to place and making friends with strangers, not to mention enjoying the snacks and drinks that studio visits can often provide. This is a great chance not only to see some new art, but also to meet the artists, who will be around for your conversation pleasure all weekend. It’s a street-wise adventure.

For a migratory performance experience, catch Lia McPherson’s Bushwick Mobile-Synchronized Cycling — a dance piece that takes place on what we’ve been promised are the “cutest little BMX bikes you’ll ever see.” The dancers will be outside of five BOS hub spaces over the course of the weekend. The brothers of Skewville change their work habits frequently, having worked long days on
unregulated shifts to maintain their status. As a result, in the last decade, the twin brothers
have created many projects on the streets and in galleries. Their aesthetic has been deemed
“Next levelism” in both arenas. Skewville’s newest body of artwork disrupts our visual perception of maintaining a routine and average lifestyle. Such a recurrent interruption of regular life patterns may result in stimulus overflow and excessive awareness.

While in town for his first solo show in NYC at Factory Fresh Gallery ROA has been busy getting up in Brooklyn. His new piece is nothing short of magic.In an unusual twist on a street art act usually considered a dis, ROAactually goes over himself — and transforms his gigantic hog into a dead rabbit..
Here is the original swine portrait, which ran for more than a year solidly without interruption (with some help from Noah Sparkes in the colorful background).
And here is the brand new rabbit pulled out of his imaginary animal kingdom. Following one of his themes, ROA reveals the inner skeletal structure of the animal – it’s bit educational for those who may be taxidermically inclined.
