Streets at the Table for Artists Ball at Brooklyn Museum

Five years into it, The Brooklyn Artists Ball has become a glittering spectacle that speaks to the traditional, the contemporary, and the beat on the street. This years greatest hits collection not only features new elaborate installations by three of Brooklyn’s celebrated Street Artists of this century, Swoon, Olek, and Faile, the custom created environments from equally charged modern thinkers like Jennifer Catron & Paul Outlaw, Fernando Mastrangelo, Duke Riley, SITU Studio, Dustin Yellin and Pioneer Works all speak to the undeniable emergence of the Brooklyn influence on the contemporary art scene.

The sky-lit Beaux-Arts Court hosts the dinner that serves as fundraiser, exhibition, and aesthetic theme park, with each artist or collective given tables to adorn and transform. With the guests touring the tables, meeting the artists, watching the awards ceremony and placing bids on the live auction, some guests may forget to eat. This crescendo of course is a celebratory tribute to the museums’ retiring director Arnold Lehman, who effectively has opened the doors to wider audiences and welcomed participation and collaboration during his nearly 20-year tenure – boldly taking risks and diplomatically shepherding the enormous institution into a contemporary relevance envied by some and which now routinely makes guests and patrons enthusiastic, engaged, and dare we say it, proud.

Here are some behind the scenes preparations for the dinner that will honor Lehman and artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Takashi Murakami, and Kiki Smith. In addition to the dinner there is a temporary exhibition of 125 exceptional works of art collected during Lehman’s tenure and a full-on dance party with more installations and which is curated by Fool’s Gold, the independent record label based in Brooklyn. We visited the museum early in the week to catch up with the artists as they were creating their tables – below are shots of the works in progress. None of the tables were completed yet so the images reflect the tables in process.

People dining at this Swoon table will see maquettes of the three boats she sailed with merry Brooklyn anarchists across the Adriatic to triumphantly arrive at the 2009 Venice Biennale.

Brooklyn’s Faile illuminate: Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller have a concept for their tables that includes turning them into giant light boxes where patrons are going to dine while looking at iconic film from their silk screen work. Street art followers will recognize many of these images from their work on the street.

Capturing Energy and the Figurative Cosmos Acording To Dustin Yellin

Capturing Energy and the Figurative Cosmos Acording To Dustin Yellin

Countless elements pulling together into one form, directed by will, energy.

Science tells us that we are matter, theologians say that we are spirit. Today we accept that humans are energy. Some innate ordered intelligence allows this energy to direct the laws of attraction/repulsion, commanding quarks and gluons to pull with and against; adding, arranging, discarding elements to the mass of distinct particles and facets that comprise us.

At any moment the inventory of our composition is not what it was yesterday, particular from what it will be tomorrow, always in motion, within it a record of our history. Energy is what dancers summon by their will – then command, allow, direct, capture, release – their collections of atoms electric, a magnetic pulling and propelling together as one, as many, with nuance.

Here in February these forms and their energy are frozen in layers of glass, arranged on enormous slides, their components visible without microscope. Dustin Yellin neatly spaces the stacked slices of stilled movement across the cosmos of this great minimalist hall at Lincoln Center and hits them with focused beams of light.

And what do they reveal? A myriad of found objects, clippings, images, textures, mirrors, gestures, memories, imaginings, emotions. The forms and their components blast apart and swirl and swarm and realign. All are in motion, and all are stilled, better seen when you exert your command of motion, your willful direction of energy.

Dustin Yellin Suspends Dance in Glass for New NYC Ballet/Art Series

Dustin Yellin Suspends Dance in Glass for New NYC Ballet/Art Series

First it was the Street Art duo Faile. Then the photographer/scene maker JR. This spring it’s back to Brooklyn for ballet inspiration and cross-discipline-generation-pollination as Dustin Yellin will bring his sculptural paintings to the New York City Ballet and its Manhattan winter performances.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-copyright-NYCBallet-Dustin-Yellin-Screen-Shot-2015-01-11-at-6.10

We’ve been right behind each one of these choices as a powerful partnership between the D.I.Y. street influenced art scene of New York today and the time honored expression of the ballet art form. This particular pairing isolates a dream most people have when witnessing the power and grace of dance – the ironic desire to suspend the dancers in movement – even if just for a minute – to more fully appreciate them.

With Dustin Yellin you may have that just that sort of opportunity because his detailed imagery and three dimensional collage will be available for anyone to see as he exhibit 15 new works created as part of an ongoing project of large-scale glass and mixed-media sculptures, each weighing more than 3,000 pounds. His multi-dimensional humans, or “psychogeographies”, will map out people in suspended animation.

“I make window sandwiches,” says Yellin as a simple distillation of his creation method and his project, which will eventually grow to 100 works in the next half-decade. To hear him speak of the layers of complexity captured at once, you hear that it is a way to capture many concepts as well – cellular memory, the atomization of our physicality, the human as the sum of all our experiences and history. Yellin would like to give you an opportunity to see through and within these humans, possibly grasping dreams, aspirations, humanity.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-copyright-NYCBallet-Dustin-Yellin-Screen-Shot-2015-01-11-at-6.07

Starting January 20 the new works will be unveiled and on view throughout the 2015 Winter Season until March 1 – with special hours open to the public (below). As was the case with Faile and JR, 3 selected performances in February are prices within reach of most students and art fans of a number of income levels – and you get to bring something home with you as well.
