Images of the Week 10.14.12

October 14, 2012

This week we saw pumpkins piled at the corner deli, the Yanks pushing on toward the series, Streisand returning at 70 to sing again in Brooklyn, that Rasta MC goin’ hard over his stack of speakers outside the barbershop on a sunny cool day, Christopher Columbus as a giant  sculpture in somebody’s living room, and we can confirm that underground art parties are now moving to Bed Stuy, bypassing Bushwick.  Stranger things will undoubtedly keep happening because Halloween is on Wednesday this year; pretty much guaranteeing a solid week of sexy horror on the street because people won’t know when to party, and you’re going to see at least 3 mock boxing fights between two guys dressed up as Obama and Romney with gloves because the Presidential election is 11/6. The actual 2nd match-up of the candidates is this Tuesday in Long Island to debate. Are the Yankees playing that night?

So here’s our weekly interview with the street, an eclectic trip that takes us to Brooklyn, Paris, Baltimore, and Russia with Cern, Overunder, Philippe HÉRARD,  Lili Luciole,  Concrete Jungle,  Hot Tea,  Love Child, Dain, Sorta,  and Cynthia von Buhler.  We start of with this faux neighborhood painted by Concrete Jungle on a building in Vladivostok.

Images of the Week 04.29.12

It’s all hot chicks and fast space shuttles this week on BSA’s Images of the Week as Street Art duo Faile’s new surprise mini-show ties both themes together quite powerfully. In a sudden burst of sexy serendipity the streets have been popping up with Street Art depictions of poised and purty dames and Faile’s quickie opening Thursday night had some of the same ladies in their artworks, gazed upon by the real thing in attendance. As one of the Patricks talked about their new tiled project down the street and the reoccurring imagery of the Space Shuttle “Challenger” in their canvasses, we could not have imagined the throngs of New Yorkers running to the Hudson River the following morning to watch the real Space Shuttle Enterprise fly across our sky, piggy-backing a 747.

The shuttle “Enterprise” will be at the Air and Space Museum, most of these Faile pieces will go to happy homes, and with any luck we’ll all have these pretty women on the streets all summer.

We’ve been learning cool stuff like Specter and friends Russell and Peter getting up in the JCC center , imagining who on earth might create a Street Art piece lionizing Ron Paul, seeing the spanky new Aiko and Bast reunited wall, and reading impressive 2 page email press releases for Street Artists who apparently get up in NYC but we never actually see and no one talks about.  It’s a weird fun life and we’re totally okay with it.

It’s been an excellent year for Street Art all over the world and we’ve had the pleasure of seeing a lot of great stuff from big names to the anonymous. Eye popping, brain-teasing, challenging, entertaining, aspirational and inspirational – it’s all happening at once.  We’ve been walking the streets, meeting the artists, going to shows, curating shows, speaking to audiences, providing walls, and asking questions. It ebbs and flows but never stays the same. With the rise of the Occupy movement this autumn, we’re already seeing an uptick in the number of people taking their messages to the street with a renewed intensity.

Let’s take a look at some of our favorite shots, whether from a rooftop in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a block-long wall in Miami, or the “Art in the Streets” show at LA MoCA. As you sample this eye-candy platter, dig the staccato soundtrack made of sounds culled from Brooklyn’s streets by electro duo Javelin, who spent a day in the Red Hook neighborhood collecting sounds and then mixed them in the back of their car. This is the kind of D.I.Y. ingenuity that is fueling the fire in artists neighborhoods all over the world, with people taking their stories and skills directly to the streets. Images of the Week 12.11.11

Thank you for all the excellent and splendid and wacky and warm submissions to the BSA Holiday Giveaway this week. BSA just has the smartest, knowledgeable, talented  and most badass readers! Our panel of judges will be casting their votes for the five winners soon and we’ll be revealing the winners during “12 Wishes for ’12” at the end of the month. A sincere “Thank You” to everybody (from everywhere!) who took the time and made the effort to share their personal wish and image. We value each and every one.

The bachanal of Street Art known as Art Basel washed like a typhoon over walls of Miami last weekend and more Street Artists than ever put up work before heading home to locations around the globe. By all accounts it was an overwhelming experience for many and artists, fans, photographers, and promoters are taking a little time to consider the experience and think about the ramifications for Street Arts’ direction. You may have seen a couple of postings we had as the work was going up last weekend here and here.

This week we show you a handful of somewhat reflective shots from the streets of Miami (and some from New York too). With time for consideration and after letting the aerosol settle, BSA will give you a huge overview of the whole Miami Street Art scene as it stands on January 2nd.
