A visually compelling show formed solely from text and pattern based pieces, Write and Repeat is a modern exploration of the two much celebrated forms.
Patterns are all around us. The repetition of shapes and colours form our environment, our natural and manmade landscapes. Even the landscape of our minds are built upon patterns and repetition; the habits and rituals, the ‘rites’ that we perpetuate.
The use of text in art has drastically evolved over time, and has been used as a purely visual element, as a more direct form of artistic expression, a political tool, and as an art form in its own right. From blatant slogans to seemingly meaningless shapes, text in art offers a unique opportunity for expression.
By combining the two exclusively, we hope to create a visually and mentally captivating collection for January 2013.

The RAMMELLZEE Galaxseum (NYC)
The Childrens Museum of the Arts is a good place to go to see the innerworkings of the visionary graffiti writer who turned his imagination into a galaxy. This kind of art-making gives inspiration to adults and kids because he fashioned toys and warships and costumes from everyday objects that were not expensive, and his output of mythic Gothic Futurism gods, heros, villains and storylines over three decades lays bare your excuse for not being creative.
It’s about the same price as a movie but the comprehensive collection of the artists work and the self-esteem mission of the museum is priceless. The Rammellzee Galaxseum is a great place to visit for an afternoon with the kids in your tribe and explore free expression – inside where it’s warm and your imagination can fly.
VINZ “Batalla” (Chelsea)
The VINZ solo show “Batalla” opens Saturday night at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in Manhattan. This Spanish Street Artist plays with the realities of humans, using his own photographs of nude models and animals to construct hybrids by playfully merging their bodies with striking results.

Street Art collective CYRCLE couldn’t agree more, and they invite you to take chaos as a hands-on personal challenge.
Organizing multiple mediums to convey a sense of coherence is an additional talent for the creative and the porous among us in this time of social, political, science and information tidal waves. While largely conceptual in process, the physical manifestation of CYRCLE’s work in these last few years is evidence of how pulling techniques and mediums together can create a sense of order, while divining a greater message.
Even their own existence as a collective has been recently rocked – Following a handful of years as a three-member collective, CYRCLE is now a duo; Rabī and Davey. After their third member, Devin, departed a couple of months ago in what is described as an entirely amicable way, this internal earthquake may be the immediate one that the two remaining members are addressing at the moment. As they buzz around the studio in preparation for their new show, Rabī is reassuring, “Order and Chaos is a huge cornerstone concept we work with, and it’s one of our favorite examples of duality in life. It’s also a huge part of the way we work together.”
Emblematic of the omnivorian approach that many of today’s new crop of Street Artists are taking to mixed media in public spaces, CYRCLE isn’t being too precious, limiting the show to one medium or plane. Looking at the pieces and installation plans as they come together, one can see that the guys are creating interactive, participatory experiences for visitors. For those who routinely put work on the streets, the concept of an ongoing conversation between viewer and artwork is a given. Coupled with the discomfort of mounting your work inside a typical gallery show environment, CYRCLE wants to keep this conversation alive.
Rabī says that collaboration is one way he and other artists find clarity in the chaos that can arise during the creative process. Describing the process of coming up with new work with Davey, he says the end product is something larger than the sum of its participants, “We have different points of view on everything from design to relationships… to food. Once we reach a point where the aesthetic marries the concept, the execution reveals a work that neither of us would have been able to create without the other. We rejoice, then Davey tells me to grow up, and I tell him to grow down,” he laughs, “which is just one example of our differing approaches to life.”
Using the metaphor of the beehive and the flower and the resulting nectar for “Organized Chaos”, their Los Angeles show that opens this week, CYRCLE clearly relies on interconnectivity. Additionally, the image of a puzzle reappears in many of the works and we see that the implied solution to chaos may be more orderly than you originally imagined.
“Puzzles generally have one correct solution,” Rabī intones, “the CUBIX pieces in our show are both completed and unresolved all of the time depending on how the viewer feels. You can rearrange the pieces into millions of different solutions. There are images that come together as a whole, but the main idea is that the look of the piece is constantly changing, in the same way that life is constantly evolving. The mystery is in the process of putting it together.”
Ultimately for CYRCLE, the process may be paramount in the creative act and chaos is merely a challenge. “Once the puzzle is completed,” says Rabī, “all you want is another puzzle.”

Barry McGee at Berkeley (CA)
The University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) mid-career survey of San Francisco based artist Barry McGee. From the press release: “Using a visual vocabulary that borrows elements from comics, hobo art, sign painting, and other sources, McGee’s work addresses a range of issues, from individual survival and social malaise to alternative forms of community”. BORF Solo in Newcastle (UK)
Detroit native BORF has traveled to England for his solo show “Walls Are Two-Sided” at The Outsiders Newcastle. With this new body of work, Borf illustrates the derelict aspect of Detroit and elevates the decay to art by zeroing in on a detail of the building’s peeling and corroding facade and transporting that vision on to the canvas. The result in the words of the press release is: “Rothko talked about wrestling with opposing and competing elements to eventually discover an equilibrium, what he called a pocket of silence” says BORF. “For this show I was fighting through layers of ambivalence and opposites: graffiti as youth expression and Rothko as adult expression; the art market and property rights; education and improvisation, youth and adulthood.” This show is now open.

“Klimpt Illustrated” at Lazarides (London)
Gustav Klimt the famous Austrian painter is turning 150 years old and The Vienna Tourist Board has teamed with The Lazarides Gallery in London to give Klimt street creed in the hopes that younger audiences will start following him on Twitter to gain knowledge on the secrets of his longevity and hopefully on his craft as well. To this effect curator Sydney Ogidan tapped nine international artists to take inspiration from some of the master’s most iconic masterpieces and create their own paintings. The opening reception for this show “Klimt Illustrated” is tonight at Lazarides Gallery in SOHO.

Lush Does “Shitty Drawings in New York City”
We thought we noticed a change in the air when the Australian storm called LUSH landed on these shores. Well here he is, likely to offend a few uptight prone-to-nose-bleeds stiffs and even more likely to amuse a lot more of us loose New Yorkers. LUSH has been madly working on a series of drawings/illustrations for his show “Shitty Drawings In New York City” opening Saturday night at the Klughaus Gallery in Manhattan. Half political cartoons/ half comic book with a blunt appreciation of the mechanics of the male and female reproductive organs, LUSH’s commentary on social, political and popular culture can be right on the spot. Dimwits need not apply.

Shepard Fairey Does “Americana” (LA)
Shepard Fairey needs no introductions at this point in his career or this point in our dang blog. One can always be certain to find him busy at work and getting involved in as many projects as he can humanly fit in his schedule. Mr. Fairey is constantly looking for inspiration and finding it often in popular culture that is around and accessible to all of us. For his new show “Americana” opening tomorrow at the Perry Rubestein Gallery in Los Angeles the artist has created a new body of work inspired by the songs of the great artist-musician Neil Young. Shepard has found material for his canvases in the songs of Mr. Young new album “Crazy Horse”.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, Summer. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways… green grass, rolling sideways down a hill in Prospect Park and feeling dizzy at the bottom, park benches and a book, 55 city swimming pools, rooftop parties and films, flip flops, rose bushes, beer from the Turkey’s Nest in a big styrofoam cup, softball games, free out door concerts (hip-hop, merengue, rock, and the philharmonic), bike riding, the Cyclone roller coaster on Coney Island, a nap under a tree, stoop sales, 5 packs of tube socks on sale at street festivals, free Shakespeare in Central Park, Dominican card games on folding tables on the sidewalk, a whole day of aerosol spraying on a huge wall, every body-type on Brighton Beach, grilled notdogs, frisbees, the smell of coconut oil, the sound of birds, kids, and the icecream truck jingle.

“20:12” in London
The show “20:12” at The Curious Duke Gallery in London, UK is now open in time for the Olympics with a solo show by #codefc. The artist has been creating stencil art as a commentary on the imminent games to be inaugurated momentarily in London, using his signature image of a camera to play with traditional images of athletes shown performing various sport disciplines. We are incredibly proud to announce the opening of LALA Gallery on Saturday, April 21, 2012 where we will be presenting LA Freewalls Inside.
LA Freewalls Inside is a group show featuring over 40 artists who have helped make Downtown Los Angeles one of the biggest and most recognizable public art spaces in the world, including Shepard Fairey, SWOON, HOW and NOSM. Keep a lookout as we unveil the final line-up over the next two weeks.
So spread the word, bring a friend and help us break-in the space for the first of what will be many, many, more events.
Ahhh, spring. Birdies, jellybeans, the smell of tulips, lavender hyacinth, aerosol paint. Cyrcle is putting up a new royally purple piece to celebrate the change of the season at LA Freewalls and Carlos Gonzalez was there to catch it in bloom.
This section of Los Angeles is like so many – teaming anonymous streams of cars and trucks rumbling by, oblivious, almost menacing to you on the sidewalk with their rapacious roar as you ascend the ladder, can in hand, a glint of mischief in your eye. Headphones buffer the cacophony, the conversations with mates giving warmth in this garish flashing peopled no-mans’ land.
With a sense of satisfaction the Street Artist collaborative Cyrcle complete their first installment of a year-long series for the LA Freewalls project on Mateo Street next to Aiko, Saber, and Kofie.
