Wall \ Therapy 2013 Friday Update 07.26.13

Skunk in the tunnel. ROA is back in Rochester.

But he’s not alone – a number of new artists arrived mid week to get the aerosol festivities reinvigorated. Not that they were flagging.

WALL\THERAPY has been up on a record number of walls all week – a rolling panoply of artists and organizers and volunteers and paint and sandwiches and water bottles and cherry pickers and neighbors stopping to watch and ask questions, offer opinions, and send it out on Instagram. Wednesday night was a meet and greet and panel talk with some of the artists and last night was a full on party at a local club. The wide variety of installations is providing entry for a lot of conversations online and in the street about the art and the artists – which is always good for building engagement with public space.

Here are new process photos from the last couple of days from Binho, Cern, Chris Stain, DALeast, Ever, Faith47, Gaia, Mr. Prvrt, Range, ROA, Siloette, Thieven Stephen, and Wise2.

Special thanks to photographers Sara Czernikowski, Jason Wilder, Alex Stuart, Josh Saunders, Lisa Barker, and Mark Deff, for sharing these great process images with BSA readers.

Chris Stain got started earlier in the week and didn’t really like his original piece, so he regathered his ideas to do this brand new piece derived from a photo he took of his son Kesh this spring. Combining an urban cityscape from Queens with the portrait, Chris explains, “Lately I’ve been inspired by double exposure photography and I wanted to explore those possibilities in my own work.”

Wall\Therapy 2013 Wednesday Update 7.24.13

POWWWWW!

Conor Harrington’s right hook is emblematic of the impact that the huge number of artists are having on Rochester right now for WALL\THERAPY. “It’s been a very well organized event and painting side by side with this line up of artists has been a blast,” says NYC graffiti veteran and globetrotter DAZE as he improvises his piece.

Meanwhile Martha Cooper is watching/shooting “Mike Ming about to attack his super colorful wall”, Lady Pink is talking to some neighborhood youth about her work, and EVER from Argentina is showing off his international collection of paint brushes to Deb Vanwert while Jason is snapping photos of him. And the weather is great since these are the two weeks a year when Rochester gets above 60 degrees. We’re up north yo! Just kidding.

Our update today contains fresh stuff from Mike Ming, Cern, Faith47, Gaia, EVER, Pose2, St. Monci, WiseTwo, Siloette, LNY, Binho, Change, Conor Harrington, DAZE, FreddySam, Lady Pink, and Range.

Special thanks to photographers Jason Wilder, Alex Stuart, Josh Saunders, Lisa Barker, and Mark Deff, for sharing these great process images with BSA readers.

” The painting I’m working on is a bit improvisational in that even though I had made many provisional sketches for it before hand all that changed once I was in front of the wall. At least part of my inspiration for the painting is coming from my experience here in Rochester – The center of the wall features the Rochester skyline as seen from Hyland park. Everything in the painting is drawn to this center,” explains Daze.

WALL\THERAPY 2013 Daily Checkup and Scan of Founder Ian Wilson

WALL\THERAPY began in earnest this weekend with a Friday kickoff party that welcomed arriving artists and the local community together and then jumped directly into the making of art with many murals going up on walls around town in Rochester simultaneously Saturday and Sunday. The dual pronged focus of WALL\THERAPY is a mural festival that draws Street Artists and graffiti artists from around the world to work alongside local artists and to raise awareness of people’s access to medical technology.

Street Art and medicine; You may wonder how the two are related, and the answer is that these are two of Ian Wilson’s greatest passions. A Brooklyn born graff writer who went on to pursue a career in teleradiology, Ian works long doctors hours at his regular gig in a local hospital and puts this WALL\THERAPY event together with partners, volunteers, and community members. Finally, he is working to bring imaging and diagnostic equipment to communities around the world who don’t have this basic tool to treat disease.

Since BSA supports people who actually give back, we are very happy to be the Media Partner for WALL\THERAPY and are proud of the artists who are lending their talents to this initiative in this northwestern town of New York State.

This year the roster has expanded to include an eclectic mix of a few serious old skool NYC graffiti names spanning 4 decades, a healthy handful of international and nationally known Street Artists that are defining the scene today, and some important local talents.

Daze. Work in progress. WALL\THERAPY. Rochester, NY. July 2013. (photo © Jason Wilder)

As a group they represent a solid lineup and are a reflection of the inclusive approach that WALL\THERAPY is taking, while skewing toward high quality. The list includes Bile, Binho, Case, Cern, Change, DalEast, Daze, Ever, Faith47, Adam Francey, Freedom, Freddy Sam, Jessie & Katey, Labrona, Lady Pink and Smith, Lea Rizzo, LNY, Mike Ming, Mr. Prvrt, Faring Purth, Pose2 and Range, ROA, Sarah C. Rutherford, and St Monci among others.

All week we will bring you exclusive new images of the creative progress and some insights into the personal stories of some of the artists as they create their works in this unique combining of art, science, and community inspiration.

Thanks today to photographers Jason Wilder, Alex Stuart, and Mark Deff for sharing these images with BSA readers.

Images Of The Week: 07.14.13

We’re in the thick of summer now ya’ll, get out the lime popsicles and 40 SPF sunscreen and let’s ride our bikes out t0 Coney Island. New Yorkers don’t need those waves like Cali to be happy, we just like the sand and the crash of the waves and waft of french fries from up on the boardwalk. Check out that lady dragging the cooler up the beach inbetween all the towels and tanning babes and boys, “Budweisahhhh! “Ice cold beeaaah heeeah! Get ’em while their cold! Get ’em while I got ’em!”  Hey, wanna go in?

Welling Court 2013 Is a Blast, Was the Last

This was the last edition of Welling Court.

Or it will be if you don’t help.

Garrison and Alison Buxton have spent countless hours, elbow grease and their own money to make this huge non-commercial Welling Court Mural Project happen 4 years in a row – giving free walls to a few hundred artist during that time.

Cost to us: Zilch, Zero, Nada

Cultural workers extraordinaire with a Rolodex list as long as the banquet table at an Italian wedding, these two have given more Street Artists artists more free opportunities than a block full of GO-GO bars. Wait, that didn’t sound right. But you get our point.

If not, here’s the point: Go pledge 10 bucks or a hundred bucks to their fundraiser for all the fun and true community spirit they have brought people for the last four years.

And this means all the artists who have been helped too. Should we start naming names?

After you pledge some money to their Indiegogo come back here and enjoy brand new images of the 4th Annual Welling Court installation. It may be the last time. And then all we will have left are logo-smothered festivals sponsored by cool “urban” lifestyle brands, real estate agents, energy drinks, and/or the Chamber of Commerce and The Daughters of the Revolution.  Jeez that’ll be fun, won’t it?

Swinging Trunks – Cernesto Gets Elephantine in London

What ya gonna do with all that junk inside your trunk?

“I got to do two nice murals in London,” says Cern as he flies back to dirty old New York for the Memorial Day Weekend in time for the official start of Summer. It looks like there is a lot of elephant love going on here, no? “It’s a metropolis of sorts built upon “upside down” elephants. It became the foundation for other hybrid creatures to dwell in.”

This one is not human-centric, he says, it’s elephant-centric. He says that he was in the aerosol zone and this “gravity defying romance unfolded above Bricklane as more elephants got to visit London. ”

Badunka dunk dunk and the trunk trunk trunk, know what I’m sayin’?  Come on Summer! Bring it.

BSA Film Friday: 04.12.13

Our weekly focus on the moving image and art in the streets. And other oddities.

Now screening: “Spray Masters” and “Tunnel Stories” Sunday in Brooklyn, Simon Silaidis Calligraphy-Graffiti “Skyfall”, Cern is becoming a Balloonatic, and Jim Vision and The Blue Walls of Buenos Aires.

BSA Special Feature:
“Spray Masters” and “Tunnel Stories”

Above is a still from the “Spray Masters” trailer, which features New York can wielders from the subway train era, Futura 2000, Lee, Lady Pink and Zephyr. Union Docs will be screening the documentary SprayMasters and the short film Tunnel Stories. It is a great opportunity to hang with some storytelling film people and the filmmakers Geoff Duncanson and Manfred Kirchheimer will be in attendance along with the series curator Reid Bingham (Cinebeasts) will be in attendance.

“Spray Masters” will be screening this Sunday at Union Docs. Click here for more information:

Simon Silaidis Calligraphy-Graffiti “Skyfall”

A stunning featurette that focuses on the gestural full-bodied application of the calligraphic graffiti work by Simon Silaidis to a large rooftop. There are a number of people today who have brought this sense of formal refinement to the hand of the graff oeuvre and it remains to be seen who takes the mantel since it keeps expanding. For sure, when you choose your winner, there will be someone to ink the award certificate.

Shot and directed by Alex Loannou, shout out for editing to Sectiongraphix.

CERN is Becoming a Balloonatic

Graffiti artist Cern ran with the YMI crew in the nineties and has evolved into a fantasy surrealist in recent years with large murals, signature birds, and idealized figures. Couple of years ago (or less) he told us that he was playing around with balloons as an experiment to augment his installations on walls. Uh-oh, looks like he’s fallen into a big balloon vortex and the fascination with balloons has, well, ballooned. In this new video we see how far he can take it, or rather how far balloons have take over Cern.

Props to Jeremy Rocklin for the camera and editing work.

Jim Vision and The Blue Walls of Buenos Aires

We end this weeks selections with dubby meditations on Street Art by Jim Vision in Buenos Aires. Because sometimes a wall just needs a splash of blue. Or many splashes of blue. Also, barbecues, sunshine, families, babies, buses, horses, angels, and devils.

BSA Film Friday: 03.29.13

Our weekly focus on the moving image and art in the streets. And other oddities.

Now screening: Vexta in Kochi, India, “Crimes of Minds” video for the new book, and Yok, Sheryo and Fecks in Mexico

BSA Special Feature:
Vexta in Kochi, India.

Australian born Brooklyn-based Street Artist Vexta was in Kochi for the first Biennale on 12/12/12 and in this new video she is learning about translating her work across cultures, opening a dialogue about gender roles, and adjusting to the reality of painting with an inquisitive audience always watching.

The short film by Rah Akaishi and Aaron Glasson with a soundtrack from Isnod sets itself apart by presenting a montage of images of life in Kochi for context, narrative insights from Vexta, and a light  popping of music and camera cuts that keep it all engaging.

“Crimes of Minds” Music Video

Here is something unusual – a music video made to support a book of Street Artists. “Crimes of Minds” comes out in April and features the work of BEST EVER, BEN SLOW, GUY DENNING, MORTEN ANDERSEN, FINBARR DAC, SLY2, C215, ALICE PASQUINI, LILIWENN, JEF AÉROSOL, WEN2, ANTOINE STEVENS, DA MENTAL VAPORZ (BLO, BOM.K, BRUSK, DRAN, GRIS, JAW, KAN, SOWAT), PAKONE, KOOL KOOR, TSF CREW, CELESTE JAVA.

Spearheaded by artist Liliwenn, the two year project was produced by the Sugar Rush non-profit and turned the French port town of Brest into a street gallery and a jumping off point for artistic expression with 26 international artists, 11 photographers, 6 video artists, 10 musicians and a number of partners, including the town council.

The musical artist is Mattic based in France and the wall art is by UK duo Best Ever.

Cat People and Dog People ; Street Artists Bring Trusted Friends

Street Artists are just as attached to their pets as anybody else, and given their reputation for being sort of secretive loners, maybe more. It’s not common but the appearance of cats and dogs on the street without leashes happens once in a while in carefully rendered drawings, illustrations, paintings, stencils, wheatpastes and stickers.

Whether it’s the formal portrait studio quality of C215’s cat stencils, Tazz’s red-nosed glowering dog stickers, or the plump and wide eyed feline hunter wheat-pastes of QRST, these animals are an important aspect of the autobiographical nature of today’s Street Art scene.  It is said that observing a pet gives you a good idea about an owners disposition. If so, what would you say about the artist who uses an animal, whether as portrait, amulet, or metaphor – to tell their story on the public thoroughfare?
