Upper Playground & FIFTY24SF Gallery Presents:
Lush Sells His Soul in San Francisco
FIFTY24SF Gallery presents “Lush Sells His Soul in San Francisco” a solo exhibition and installation by Melbourne, Australia’s LUSH opening August 5th at 7pm.
LUSH is a graffiti writer who likes porn, kittens, and making people angry. His work features male and female genitalia juxtaposed with comedic messages and comic book illustrative style. He sometimes makes people, especially other members of the graffiti community, upset with his pornography graffiti, tongue-in-cheek videos, and unfiltered twitter and interview statements. When he is at his most theatrical, LUSH makes artwork inspired by other graffiti writers, created in an absurdist style demanding a call and response. Some see the work as equally offensive, equally humorous. His recent photo shoots require naked female models/strippers/porn stars to interact with his graffiti. In a recent conversation, LUSH has called Larry David an idol. Is he serious? Who the fuck does this guy LUSH think he is?
Known as both a controversial talent and grand shit talker, LUSH comes to FIFTY24SF Gallery as a much-talked about artist who has invigorated the Flickr and Twitter community over the past 24 months with the spread of his graffiti. For his first solo show in San Francisco, LUSH explores the idea that gallery shows should be events more than a place to see art. Example: If you like women naked in front of your graffiti, bring the nudity to the gallery. LUSH and team have created a real-life installation peep show, featuring models from San Francisco’s iconic nude revue, the Lusty Lady. The exhibition will also feature a new series of works on canvas. Mostly, LUSH plans on keeping up on some contemporary shit-talk.
LUSH asks that you remember to bring your $1 bills to the show.
Hold Up Art Gallery Presents: Septerhed: “Suversive Holiday” (Los Angeles, CA)
Septerhed
Opening Reception on August 6, 2011 from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM
Exhibition Runs through September 1, 2011
Hold Up Art
328 E. Second Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Hold Up Art is proud to present “Subversive Holiday,” the first solo exhibition for the prolific wheat paste artist Septerhed. Known for his plurality of designs and characters, Septerhed has earned a respected place in the street art circles of Los Angeles. Though his background in illustration and graphic design helped to inform his visual aesthetics, it is Septerhed’s sarcasm and sense of humor that make his images not only enjoyable, but memorable. Generally, Septerhed’s images tend to originate from a digital composition, and are reproduced through either silk-screening, or by hand with acrylic paints. “Subversive Holiday” features a closer examination of three of Septerhed’s most recognizable characters (The GEO-HEDs, Toxins and Wolves), explaining the existence and nuances of each style as a specific mode of design. The exhibition will also feature a limited edition giclee print, “Don’t Mind Me” released exclusively through Hold Up Art.
“Septerhed’s activity and anonymity on the streets was what first caught my eye. I had fallen in love with his “geo heads” long before I even knew his name; bold, bright and always stood out in a sea of pasted posters,” shares Hold Up Art curator Brian Lee. “When I finally saw a body of his work at a street art show a year ago, I was blown away by the diversity of imagery, yet it all seemed to make sense within the context of Septerhed. I’m very excited to see ‘subversive holiday’, and the reaction it draws from our audience, the work he has put into this show is inspiring.”
Although Septerhed, has been an artist his entire life, he has only become an obsessive slave to his artwork over the last 5 years. A graduate of Otis College of Art and Design, Septerhed utilized his knowledge of communication arts to create his own personal brand of visual self-politics. His work leverages the symbolism that is ever present within modern society, along with cultural associations of love and hate, and life and death. Ultimately, Septerhed’s work explores his personal struggle, and aims to represent his allergic reaction to reality and fate.

Brand New Photos from Todd Mazer
Late afternoon Los Angeles was the scene of a new splash of wild magic from LISTER yesterday as he sketched out and created a sooper cool visionary for the downtown street scene. In his signature portrait style, the Street Artist created a monochromatic seer with rainbows arching out from inside her glorious mind. Just goes to show you can’t judge someone by their external appearance.

Steven P. Harrington and Jaime Rojo of BSA are curating some LA Freewalls with Daniel Lahoda in the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles over the next couple of weeks as part of a cultural exchange between NY and LA to celebrate some of the talented people who tell great stories with their art. Daniel is the mind and the man behind the LA Freewalls Project that has already brought a number of amazing artists and art to the streets in the City of Angels.
Photographer and BSA contributor, Todd Mazer was literally on call to capture Anthony Lister’s new piece. Great thanks to Todd, who stayed up late to give BSA readers these first pictures this morning.

The Site Unscene and Physical Goods Present “Mind Control” (Los Angeles, CA)
Mind Control: Opening Reception
8:30 – Midnight, Friday, August 5th, 2011
Peep Show Gallery
1621 N. Cahuenga Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90028
MIND CONTROL GALLERY SHOW OPENS ON AUGUST 5TH FEATURING STREET ARTISTS AND FINE ARTISTS FROM LA TO SAN FRANCISCO.
Los Angeles, California, July 12th, 2011 – On August 5th, The Site Unscene in conjunction with Physical Goods are proud to present MIND CONTROL featuring artists Eddie Colla, Bughouse, Destroy All Design, DD$ and Insurgency Inc.
MIND CONTROL is a curated study upon the topic of mind control as expressed via the imaginations of some of Los Angeles and San Francisco’s most well known street & fine artists. The curated show allows each artist to interpret the concept of “mind control” in a way personal to them and their work. The influence of the advertising, media, peers and society as a whole has a hold on each of our mind’s that is not only hard to ignore, but often times hard to even recognize. MIND CONTROL aims to shed light onto the constant bombardment of our minds by these outside influences, in a hope to support the idea of thinking for oneself. The opening night event will be the first in a month long series of events.
The artists exhibiting in MIND CONTROL inlcude: San Francisco based street artist Eddie Colla, Los Angeles design studio Bughouse, LA street artist Destroy All Design, LA street/fine art trio DD$, and Los Angeles based lifestyle collective Insurgency Inc.
Eddie Colla: There is a visual conversation that takes place on the streets of urban environments. This conversation is dominated primarily by advertising and utilitarian signage and assumes passive participation. Whether invited or not I am going to participate in this conversation. Public spaces were never intended to be coated from top to bottom with photos of consumer products. These spaces should, in some manner, reflect the culture that thrives in that space.
Bughouse: BUGHOUSE, an art and design studio based out of Los Angeles, is creative duo Rebecca Johnson & Jeff Klarin. Bughouse creates original artwork and handmade furniture that is dark-humored and inspired by vintage ephemera, pharmaceuticals and music paraphernalia.
Rebecca Johnson, one half of Bughouse was born and raised in Los Angeles. Her medium is chosen by what is most appropriate for the subject and mood, ranging from painting to mixed media to photography. Her subject matter often has a dark comedic sensibility. Jeff Klarin lives and works in Los Angeles as part of Bughouse. Exploring and pushing the boundaries of conventional fabrication and visual representation is what drives his creations. Many of his mixed-media pieces utilize photography, painting, illustration and transfer techniques that create organic ‘accidents’ that unexpectedly alter and transform the creative process.
Destroy All Design: Destroy All Design’s philosophy is just that, destroy everything you know in order to realize what true design is. The joystick image, iconic to Destroy’s work, is a symbol of simplified design, represents a time when design was simple, and serves as a symbol for his visual manifesto. With a background in graffiti, it is the unique mix of writing skill combined with an expert design eye that makes his street work so recognizable and appealing.
DD$: DD$, aka The Double D’s, is another incarnation of famed street crew Cyrcle. DD$ is a three man collective, each artist comes from different backgrounds of the artistic spectrum- graffiti, fine art, and design. They utilize negative and oppressive imagery to create hope and inspiration. DD$ strives to shed light on otherwise dark matters, playfully exposing the gray areas of life.
INSURGENCY INC: INSURGENCY INC’s mission is to ‘force one into self-evaluation and thereby into self-motivation.’ The collective, made up of artists, writers, photographers and revolutionaries, creates art that involves the use of everyday imagery with out of context ‘lifestyle’ copy to re-appropriate the imagery in a means to evoke emotional responses, while their blog and lifestyle installations at events throughout LA intend to achieve the same within their audience’s lives.
Mind Control is curated by The Site Unscene and is brought to you by Physical Goods. The Site Unscene is a new agency for a new kind of artist, which represents, aides and promotes the finest in LA street art and artists. Physical Goods is a multi-platform, artist collective, gallery/store currently based out of the Peep Show Gallery. Physical Goods, created by Brian Meiler is the future of art & retail, making great art available to the masses in unique ways.

Junk Food Art House Presents Anthony Lister
Opening Reception Friday, July 29, 2011 from 8-11pm
On view July 29 -August 29, 2011
Junk Food Clothing is pleased to announce Junk Food Art House Presents Anthony Lister, celebrating the launch of its innovative new platform Junk Food Art House — highlighting creative initiatives spanning art, film and fashion. Following a 3-week long teaser poster campaign on the streets of Los Angeles featuring “wanted” posters of lost DC Comics Super Heroes, Junk Food Art House will make its debut on Friday, July 29, 2011 with a special event held at HVW8 Art + Design Gallery. This event brings together a notable trifecta of collaborators: Anthony Lister, HVW8 Art + Design Gallery, and Junk Food.
For the project, Junk Food Art House has teamed up with internationally-acclaimed Australian street artist Anthony Lister. Known for his iconic imagery of Super Heroes, Lister customized the artwork of Warner Bros.’ legendary DC Comics Super Hero characters, including Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Aquaman and The Flash in his signature style. Lister comments, “Decidedly, I have chosen to use comic book characters as a metaphor to reference ancient mythological battles between heroes and villains, authority figures and survivalists, pseudo-equality and the general human condition today.”
Throughout the month of July, a series of mysterious and much talked-about street posters featuring Lister’s DC Comics Super Hero artwork, created exclusively for Junk Food Art House, were spotted throughout Los Angeles. The poster campaign will culminate in a launch event at HVW8 Art + Design Gallery on July 29. Transforming the space with custom murals throughout the gallery’s exterior and interior, Lister will unveil a large-scale site-specific painting for the show. The centerpiece will be an old-fashioned ice cream truck covered in vibrant graphics painted by Lister and will serve as a mobile pop-up shop, officially launching Junk Food’s entrée into mobile retail. The evening will also feature an assortment of not-to-be missed highlights, including a video installation displaying exclusive footage of Lister customizing the truck and the premiere of Junk Food’s t-shirt collaboration with Lister. A limited-edition collection of poster art will debut the night of the opening and be available the entire month of August in addition to Lister’s exhibition at HVW8 Gallery.
Following recent product installations in Colette, Selfridges, and Beams, this collaboration marks the premiere project for Junk Food Art House, a project highlighting unique artists followed by limited edition product capsules sold at leading retailers throughout the world. Andrei Najjar, Vice President at Junk Food, notes, “We are incredibly excited to launch our newest brand platform with Anthony Lister. Our DNA is built from art and creativity and Lister’s signature non-traditional approaches to his craft are similar to the values that formed our company over 12 years ago.”

Brooklyn Street Art Presents: “Street Art Stories” At MOCA Grand Avenue Ahmanson Auditorium (Los Angeles, CA)
STREET ART STORIES
Presented by Brooklyn Street Art
A Presentation and Panel Discussion About New Stories Told on the Street Today
In Street Arts’ latest chapter, the storytellers are hitting up walls with all manner of influences and methods. More than ever before, formally trained and self taught fine artists are skipping the gallery route and taking their work directly to the public, creating cultural mash-ups and highly personal stories of their own, altering the character of this scene once again. Eclectic, individual, and as D.I.Y. as you can imagine, these Street Artists may have knowledge of who came before them or not, but they are determined to be a part of one art scene that is perceived as authentic, relevant, and alive.
Join Steven P. Harrington and Jaime Rojo, authors and founders of Brooklyn Street Art and contributing Street Art writers for The Huffington Post ARTS, as they show and compare examples of work from New York’s streets today. Then join a lively discussion with knowledgeable panelists about precursors to this storytelling practice and how it may be evolving what we have been calling “Street Art” for the last decade.
Hosted by The Huffington Post ARTS and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) at MOCA Grand Avenue Ahmanson Auditorium, our panelists are:

The Pantheon Catalog Release Party: Saturday in Brooklyn
About a year ago Daniel Feral told us about this idea he had for a show at the Donnell Library across from MOMA to draw attention to the history of graff and Street Art in New York. It seemed like a pretty vast undertaking at the time, and in fact, the project gradually and quickly ballooned and incorporated much of the community and helped capture this moment in history as well as give perspective to the evolution that preceded it. With partner Joyce Manolo and a cast of hundreds, Mr. Feral has taken a deep dive and produced a tome that will be used for reference for years to come, along with his own diagrammatic explanation of the evolution of Graffiti and Street Art in the context of other 20th Century art movements.
This 426-page catalog is a hybrid of scholarly journal, popular magazine, and graff zine. 33 artists from the 1970s through today tell their own histories, in their own words and pictures, while local writers and photographers give an overview of the cultural milieu. The catalog includes a dedication to Rammellzee by Charlie Ahearn, essay on the Feral Diagram by Daniel Feral, and Street Art in the 2000s by Steven P. Harrington with photographs by Jaime Rojo, in addition to 20 essays, 20 interviews and over 400 images from the efforts of over 30 individuals.

SANER
Edgar “Saner” Flores is an urban artist, illustrator and graphic designer. Raised by his parents in Mexico City and surrounded by rich color and tradition, Saner developed an interest in drawing and Mexican muralism early on. He began expressing himself on paper and through graffiti art, later going on to earn a degree in graphic design from the Universidad Autónoma de México. His creations are influenced by Mexican custom and folklore, color, mysticism, masks and skulls. A mix of these lifelong interests and passions has led him to become the artist he is today. Brooklyn Street Art Presents: “Street Art Saved My Life: 39 New York Stories” in collaboration with ThinkSpace Gallery at C.A.V.E. Gallery in Venice (LA), California
Street Art Saved My Life : 39 New York Stories heralds the new highly individual character of stories being told on the streets of New York by brand new and established Street Artists from all over the world. Steven P. Harrington and Jaime Rojo, founders of BrooklynStreetArt.com focus on this flashpoint in modern Street Art evolution by curating a strongly eclectic story-driven gallery show with 39 of the best storytellers hitting the streets of New York.
Street Art Saved My Life : 39 New York Stories, the gallery show, accompanied by an LA street wall series by selected artists and a public panel lecture and discussion, intends to stake out the New Guard in street art while recognizing some powerful near-legendary forerunners.
The mainly New York lineup exhibits talent from other parts of the US and internationally (Australia, France, UK, Canada, Israel, Germany) and it is as steely, idiosyncratic and storied as the New York scene itself, including Anthony Lister, Adam Void, Broken Crow, C215, Cake, Chris Stain, Clown Soldier, Creepy, Dan Witz, El Sol 25, Ema, Faile, Futura, Gaia, Gilf!, Hargo, Hellbent, How & Nosm, Imminent Disaster, Indigo, Judith Supine, Kid Acne, Know Hope, Ludo, Mark Carvalho, Miss Bugs, Nick Walker, NohJColey, Over Under, Radical!, Rene Gagnon, Skewville, Specter, Sweet Toof, Swoon, Tip Toe, Troy Lovegates AKA Other, Various & Gould, and White Cocoa.
The staunch individualists in Street Art Saved My Life : 39 New York Stories give voice to the evolution of the Graffiti, Mash-Up, and D.I.Y. movements that birthed them; creating an eccentric, highly individual, and raucous visual experience on the street. With widely varied backgrounds, techniques, and materials at play, “The Story” is the story. With truths as diverse and difficult as the city itself, each one of these artists is a part of a fierce, raw, new storytelling tradition that is evolving daily before our eyes.
