BSA Special Feature: Monumental Shadows: Rethinking Colonial Heritage

Last month we covered this Berlin-based project addressing the staining effect of colonialism and racism on everything we see and the structures that we interact with and are formed by today in so-called Western culture. To see the documentary progression of the project and hear the voices of those who executed it is powerful – and instructive.

“We have to deal with people who feel entitled to exclude other people from participation, from conversation, from civil rights, from society, from history,” say Various and Gould.

Brilliant pieces and campaigns like this that require so much time and energy and resources are carefully planned and considered, and quietly have the opportunity and potential to change hearts and minds – even to alter the course of history.

OSGEMEOS: SEGREDOS – Ep. 3

“It’s nice that the story isn’t made from one point of view. There are many accounts, and from various elements,” says artist Soberana Ziza, and you suddenly realize that this is the very dynamic that makes this series by OSGEMEOS about Hip Hop so ardently insistent on grabbing your attention, and communicating the steely core of a culture born from our common streets.

There are many voices that make a scene, and not only the loudest ones, and that is an important quality that gives such resonance to this scene over time, wherever it grows. Here we get a brief look at the inherent misogyny evidenced in society generally, and therefore in the culture of Hip Hop specifically.

Are we surprised? “What place is not hostile to women,?” asks Soberana Ziza.

“The world spends an astounding US$423 billion annually to subsidize fossil fuels for consumers – oil,…”

There is not really a lot to say after that.

Os Gemeos: Secrets – Ep. 02

Possibly more important anthropologically than their autobiographical artworks, OSGEMEOS has given us all a huge gift with this new series that documents the rise of hip hop culture at the precise juncture where it intersects with another city far away to the south. Through precise, on-point interviews, they point the spotlight on the crucial elements that formed and pushed “the culture” forward internationally, and personally.

Hypercourt Dendermonde

In the small city of Dendermonde in Belgium, the magic of the drone is helping to bring the new trend of painting basketball courts to video. Literally it seems like we are seeing one per week from all over the world – This one is with the Viewmasters2021 Project, which also created 5 murals around the city, along with this court designed and executed by Drukdoenerij (http://www.drukdoenerij.be) in collaboration with curator of the project Bart Warnier of Whamoffice.

BSA Special Feature: CROSSROADS: Life in the Resilient City

To live anywhere for any period, one needs to develope a certain resiliency, maybe even a strong cortex. During the Seoul Biennialle on Architecture and Urbanism this year, responsible urban growth was focused upon like never previously – with people and systems at their core.

“Five cities. Five stories. This documentary looks at the urban experience from the perspective of people living at the interface of the changing world. In New York, Seoul, Mumbai, Paris and Nairobi creativity and imagination is necessary to survive and thrive as the cities they live in constantly evolve.”

BSA is proud to debut a new collaborative print with Shepard Fairey and Shepard Fairey – a true honor really. Released by Urban Nation today it is a print made from a brand new original artwork commissioned for the Urban Nation Museum and our exhibition “Martha Cooper: Taking Pictures”.

During his development of the canvas last year Shepard was interviewed in Studio Number 2 by New Deal. See this video and you can learn a little about the new print going on sale today.

“Landless Stranded” by Pejac

As long as we’re in Berlin, we’ll be checking out PEJACs new show here this week and of course, we’ll be heading out to Holy Cross Church to see this powerful new public statement, “Landless Stranded.”

“As most people are familiar with distressing scenes involving refugees only through television images, it’s a bewildering sight to behold in an urban setting, high above street level. It’s as though reality has been dismantled in one location and anomalously constituted anew somewhere else,” says Pejac.

BSA Special Feature: MANTRA in the Wynwood Jungle

For this installment of BSA Film Friday week we offer you our own home-made video observing French street artist and naturalist Youri Cansell AKA MANTRA as he painted in situ among the plants and animals in Miami. Tuesday night’s conversation with our editor in chief Steve Harrington and the artist on the grounds of Wynwood Walls revealed the exacting nature of the artist’s contemplative study of the very pillars of our Earth-anchored existence.

More clinical than didactic in his descriptions, his study of this species and their endangered circumstances is nonetheless passionate. Speaking against a video backdrop of Mantra painting enormous murals around the world, his sharp eye is surpassed only by his reverent appreciation for beauty, executed in precision and warmth.

Here in the temporarily verdant environment created in the gallery by curator and artist Peter Tunney, MANTRA appears to be painting in the forest preserve, surrounded by the lush and the leafy, anchored by a full-wall photo by friend Ryan Lynch of an Equadorian reserve.

A graffiti writer as a teen, an ardent and self-professed amateur entomologist and preservationist in his thirties, Mantra took it as a near-mystical sign when he spotted an actual caterpillar eating leaves on a plant next to him. He has been painting in near solitude while visitors quietly mill around behind him and he looked down to see the unique markings of this visitor, identifying it as a Monarch butterfly en route. Now the artist says that he is ever-clearer of his future projects – as we are of his future successes.

BSA Special Feature: Nathan Paulin on a High Wire Between Tour Eiffel & Theatre National

After gawking at the Arc de Triomphe here last week we wandered into one of our favorite outdoor arts – the tight wire walker, specifically Nathan Paulin, who walked above the crowds at the Eiffel Tower September 18th. A precursor perhaps to Parkour and more likely progeny of the circus, the art of walking high above the ground and risking life and limb and managing poetry at the same time is outrageous to some, sublime to others.

Man on Wire. Twin Towers with Philippe Petit

In 1974, Philippe Petit, a 24 years old artist from France, performed what to this date we consider to be the most extraordinary unauthorized street art act ever pulled off in the world. On the morning of August 7, Mr. Petit walked across the Twin Towers on a high-wire without any safety precautions. No net, no harness. Just his mind, his balancing pole, and his body.

Mr. Petit’s meticulously planned stunt involved illegally rigging a 440-pound cable between the towers with the help of a small crew. He performed for 45 minutes at 1,312 ft (400 meters) walking 8 times back and forth along the wire, sitting, looking down, and waving to the stunned crowd below. Nobody will ever do that again. The Twin Towers are gone but Mr. Petit is still here, with us in NYC.

The Spanish street artist Pejac debuts a 45 piece collection of artworks for his show called APNEA in Berlin at the end of this month, his largest show to date.

“Most of the works were conceived while the world was holding its breath. APNEA for me means breathing again’’, Pejac comments in reference to both the pandemic and the title of his show. ‘‘During a time of lockdown, painting within the four walls of my studio felt like a liberation and a lifeline. APNEA represents this contradiction.’’

BSA Special Feature: Christo and Jeanne-Claude, a Final Triumph in Paris

Bet you are wondering when the big unveiling is! Dying to see what is underneath?

A tribute to the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, famous for their large scale, site specific outdoor installation, this is the final triumph! Or Triomphe, as you may wish.

Climbers, cloth, and red rope have encased the famous monument and star that lies at the center of twelve radiating avenues, L’Arc de Triomphe this month – a public celebration of the work of the two artists and their lifetime of work together.

Today we dedicate Film Friday to this project and the various ways it is being described and interacted with by the public.

BSA Special Feature: Thierry Mandon Living Outside

We dedicate this Friday’s edition of BSA Film Friday to French performance and conceptual artist Thierry Mandon. Mr. Mandon conveys his art through performances and installations by using himself as the subject of his compositions, his tableaus of unremarkable domesticity exposed publicly.

Video and photography open the door to the work with the rest of the world as only a handful of people are present while he dangles himself from abandoned buildings or performs an act of solitude openly on the streets. Day-to-day is elevated – the mundane activities of living reframed as sublime acts. Recontextualized, these ordinary moments spawn a feeling of performance, implicating you in the scene.

BSA Special Feature: A Kaleidoscopic Journey Through Money

The confidence and reverence that humans give to currencies is as much an article of faith as any religion can conjure. In fact, it is a requirement for any money not backed by gold – your faith. The motifs and icons and design flair employed in its presentation to the user are indicative of our values as well. Here the director and designer Lachlan Turczan breaks apart the elements, finds their similarities and differences, and delightfully, mesmerizingly, re-flows the results to a musical soundtrack by Blake Mills.

“I made hi-resolution scans of banknotes from 23 countries ranging from the 1800s to the modern-day. Machine learning was used to further enhance these scans so that I could zoom in on the intricacies of the engravings. Using replacement animation techniques, the guilloché patterns wash over the viewer in a barrage of linework and geometry. Iconic scenes throughout history are also shown: the age of exploration leads to industrialization, wonders of the world are replaced by office buildings and icons of freedom stand in stark contrast to images of slavery. The project culminates with the collective eyes of all world leaders staring back at the audience.”

BSA Special Feature: Faith XLVII X KOLEKA PUTUMA

South African Street Artist Liberty Du, known as Faith XLVII shares her new collaboration with Koleka Putuma, the South African queer poet and theatre-maker, this week on BSA Film Friday.

“South African women are brave. Strong. And not just a little strong. They are strong down to their bone marrow. They have known great suffering. And still, they sing. What an honor it’s been to know such women! I’ve been humbled in my life again and again by the sheer resilience of friends. The pain is inexplicable. In the first 3 weeks of lockdown, more than 120 000 cases of Gender-Based Violence were reported across the country. We are exhausted from the news each week. Our sisters, mothers, grandmothers, our children were violated, abused, and murdered. Working on this project alongside Koleka Putuma is not something I take lightly, Koleka is a force. Her words break up open in order to really have real conversations about what’s happening.”

Moments Like This Never Last. Cheryl Dunn/Dash Snow. Trailer

The mythmaking stories continue to propagate about this anti-authoritarian creative skateboarding graffiti-writing white guy from a wealthy family who died too young in a drug-fueled life of experimentation and excess. Cheryl Dunn pulls all the stories together to help establish his talents and hijinx as veritable proof that the early millenial was onto something new in the graffiti/street/art milieu of IRAK crew of 2000s New York – partying hard and hitting the heights.

9 Ways To Draw a Person

The possibilities are absolutely endless, if you are to follow the guidance of film director, artist, animator Sasha Svirsky. By mixing abstraction, collage, and animation, he pulls you in and reawakens your earliest knowledge about creativity, reaffirming that you too, can draw a person.
