BSA Special Feature: Royyal Dog: “Prettier Than Flowers”

Royyal Dog (Chris Chanyang Shim, 심찬양) is a Korean graffiti writer and street artist from Seoul, Korea. In this video his photorealistic skills are on display in this video from a few years ago, the sunny day reminding us of spring and the promise of warm breezes, sunshine, and new love. The portrait radiates while balancing floral details, traditional dress and messages written in Korean caligraphy

Shuko & Friends via I Love Graffiti

“Spray-painting trains in 2022 still is a very important part of the Graffiti movement,” say the folks at ILoveGraffiti.de, who produced this video on Berlin based graffiti writer SHUKO. Within a minute you can see that SHUKO is active on subway trains and s-trains, a thunderous rush of adrenaline powering the circumspect movements of aerosol-wielding people for a half century. For the last couple of years, Berlin’s trains have been showcasing the work of many artists in heavy numbers and quick succession.

BSA Special Feature: Yoko Ono / Imagine Peace Digital Billboard Campaign

You wouldn’t know it by the continuous bombing that the US has been doing over the last 20 years or that Russia has been doing in Ukraine for the last 20 days or so, but it doesn’t have to be this way. We refer to a January article about it in Salon that says the US drops an average of 46 bombs a day, and they are not the only ones who are talking about this. They refer to the “December 2021 New York Times exposé of the consequences of U.S. airstrikes, the result of a five-year investigation, was stunning not only for the high civilian casualties and military lies it exposed, but also because it revealed just how little investigative reporting the U.S. media have done on these two decades of war.” Why don’t most of us know about this?

Let’s disincentivise war and make it completely unappealing for those who profit from it. And as Yoko has been saying for decades, Imagine Peace. Her new campaign of digital billboard messages are in London, New York, Melbourne, Seoul, West Hollywood, Berlin, Milan… As you listen to the atmospheric sounds on this video of her billboard in Piccadilly Circus in London, it’s surprise the number of American accents you hear, and the traffic sounds don’t sync at all with the action on the street. Obviously it is not meant to be a documentary, rather an aspirational idea.

BSA Special Feature: Pejac: “SO FAR, SO CLOSE” The making of a print.

A recent print by street artist Pejac has a sudden additional resonance as we consider it. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is directly adjacent to Europe and NATO member countries, yet in another perspective, it feels far away for many Europeans.

In an interconnected world that is reliant upon trade and diplomatic ties, and one that is weighted with entrenched war industry interests, no one is far from it today.

“This delicate piece of art depicts a bird’s-eye view of a battle in an infinite trench. ‘‘Sometimes perceiving someone as a friend or foe is just a matter of perspective’, Pejac comments in reference to his artistic rendition of the absurdity of combat.”

“At the tail end of October 2021, a former train manufacturing site in Berlin was home to a 10 days-long exhibition. It was Pejac’s fourth self-produced solo show that saw the Spanish artist push his exposition practice to new levels. Having at his disposal eight different rooms and spaces, Pejac put on display over forty new artworks that literally came in all shapes and sizes.”

BSA Special Feature: ‘Gold Mine’ by Pejac

Pejac recently completed a series of interventions within the oldest prison in Spain, the Penitentiary Center of El Dueso. Located at the entrance of artist’s hometown of Santander, overlooking the Cantabrian sea and surrounded by marshes, the prison built at the beginning of the 20th century on the remains of an old Napoleon’s fort was another challenging setting to carry out his poetic interventions.

For 11 days, its walls, courtyards, and corridors became the artist’s workplace, giving life to the Gold Mine project in that sense. The project integrates three singular pieces, which as a whole represent the value of the human condition, its resistance to adversity, the need to create, and its desire, above all, to leave a mark.

“A prison itself is a place wrapped in harsh reality and at the same time, I feel that it has a great surrealist charge. It is as if you only need to scratch a little on its walls to discover the poetry hidden inside.” PEJAC

And on another side of the coin, Doug Gillen of FifthWall TV talks about graffiti and street artists who go to prison as punishment for doing illegal graffiti on the streets.

Memoria Canera

Said Dokins, Cix, and Spaik: Memoria Canera was part of a three mural series made by the outstanding Mexican Street Artists Said Dokins, Cix, and Spaik at the Maximum Security Penitentiary in Morelia, Michoacán.

The project intended to shed light on a discussion about Cultural Rights and how artistic and cultural practices can be a valuable tool to mediate against exclusion and marginalization. By disrupting the space with color and text, symbols and patterns, the environment is transformed. The new murals are “Puedes Volver a Volar” (You can Fly Again) by Spaik, “Estado Mental” (Mental State) by Cix, and “Memoria Canera” (Memories from Jail) by Said Dokins.

Calmer, more measured perhaps, and still pissed off at those who appropriate the culture and then mow it over, here’s Doug Gillen examining a community led mural program being dissed by a fast food corporation in Cardiff, Wales. More alarming perhaps are the middle people who smooth the path and take a cut, according to this new episode of Fifth Walls, called “Cultural Vandals”.

DOES: Cement Graffiti piece at Amsterdam’s STRAAT Museum

An unusual feat of art-making that brings his piece into another dimension, DOES builds up the foundation for his lettering with a carefully applied layer of cement. STRAAT Museum has the story and DOES brings the skillz.

New Border. Imagine a different kind of Southern Border between the USA and Mexico.

The project is called “New Border” and it proposes a constructive alternative bilateral, ecological and humanistic solution to the wall erected (in part) under the Trump administration on the decaying US-Mexican border.

The Greek Bar Jacket

Here’s an hour and eight minute film from the House of Dior. It tells us about the making and the evolution of a collection. There’s no surprise to discover that many fabled collections have been inspired by ancient cultures and their peoples. This particular collection is a tribute to Greece and the designers’ challenge is not to appropriate directly from the culture or make it look like a museum. This film is an excellent complement to the current exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum: “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” currently on view until February 20th.

For artist Tuco Wallach the street art story has nearly always been a family affair that mixes easily with his Humask campaign. His psychological treatise on man’s relationship with himself and society and masks may be internal, but the actual street practice is often externalized to include friends and family to create, place, document the new works that go into the public places. Here, as a chill holiday recording of a moment, we see the intimate and precise care that goes into his process – a process that is open and welcoming, and participatory. He says the video is about wood cabins, family, shadows, lights, friends, and Humask.

In the depths of New York winter, we like to escape to that sticky and warm time in summer when the air and the bees buzzed in unison, the thick richness of the days and nights, lingering in reverie. At the time we called it Bastardilla in Love With Bees and the Taste of Summer in Stornara, Italy. We dare you not to fall in love or at least be enchanted.

“You can tell a lot about a city just by reading its walls.” Okay, Saber, you have our attention. And it’s shot by Chop ’em Down films? We’re there. Here the graffiti writer and fine artists narrate the police state of the LA during one of its more dismal periods caught on camera – and the record of a constant state of uprising.

Now a grand don of graffiti looking back, he sees the fall of LA hasn’t halted, only intensified, but his heart is still in it. He has become performative, crystalizing the movements of his work and his history into a gestural full-body modern performance; rebellious and distraught and yet full of passion – his own evolution from the street to the studio to the street again.

The new piece is regaled with celebration and song in Dorado, Puerto Rico.

Curated by Liza Quiñonez of Street Theory Gallery, artists Cey Adams, Sophia Dawson, and Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez, celebrate African American and Latinx heritages in a city and a social climate that is always on the move. Nationally and internationally renowned Brooklyn artists with histories and talents for miles, the three painted new works in DUMBO that combine elements of fine art, hip hop, and pop culture – with a background of deeply needed conversations about racial and social justice in this city, and this country.
