BSA Special Feature: URBAN ART 2014 on Auction with Artcuriel

A film by Jérémy Jaoui

This is what it looks like now; a powerful visual documentation and summary of one plainly commercial aspect of this moment in the evolution of graffiti art/ Street Art/ urban art – and its collectability with a growing global artworld fan base. The video follows Artcuriel and it’s personable auctioneer Arnaud Oliveux as the crowd gathers and clinks glasses, listens to speeches, views live art-making and inspects a collection of fine art created by graffiti and Street Artists which will soon be auctioned.

As one observer notes while thumbing through the show catalog “Urban Art is becoming something real!” Now the vulgar rap lyrics that describe sexual acts to a beat which accompanied the visuals of the artists in the gallery are replaced with rarefied classical strings and no percussion when we enter the auction room where commerce takes place.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-Screenshot-Artcuriel-auction-2014-740Excitement in the packed house is palpable and the auctioneer is the entertaining and electrified ringmaster, with poised assistants tensely perched on the telephone with international bidders.

“With an artist like LUDO, Arnauld is being very avant-garde,” says a knowledgeable admirer while we see the piece reach a record price to applause and pieces are placed on the mantel by men in white gloves. “Urban Art is now happening as we wanted it to,” says Monsieur Oliveux to us from his desk.

Well edited and skillfully presented, the film by Jaoui Jérémy gives you a rare glimpse into a world far removed from the street yet inextricably tied to it – where one time vandals become art stars, collectible artists, performers and celebrity endorsers.  It’s your call whether it is a celebration or an indictment, and perspectives will vary according to where you sit, but here the elements are all on parade before your eyes and presented in a passionate way.

Building Detroit – Revok, Nekst, Pose

The graffiti and Street Art scene in abandoned Detroit is “thriving like I don’t think we’ve seen in the US for quite some time,” observes artist Pose, one of the few writers/artists who is straddling the street and commercial gallery world. “When you leave something and don’t care about it, we come here.” It’s a rallying cry for painters, a cautionary statement for authorities that encapsulates one of the primary dynamics of the graffiti/street art/public art scene.

But then Pose offers an additional sentiment that gets missed in these often simplified arguments. “We care about it, we’ll paint it all day.”

From MOCA in LA to MOCAD here, where both Revok and Pose have created large scale works, the institutional recognition of the contribution of the art form is remarkable. Simultaneously the freewill act of it a few blocks away from the museum has greater implications from a legal aspect.

Oh no! Complexity to contemplate.

Sheryo and Yok in Indonesia

“Sheryo and The Yok go to Indonesia to learn batik and sculpture” says their description but we think they may already know a thing or two about both. Here they are line illustrating with hot wax, adding a third dimension in clay to characters with phallus noses, and hitting up random walls throughout the city and on the beach with aerosol. Like any good guests, they make sure to credit their hosts here, which is real nice.  Oh yes, and there’s a gallery show at Turner Gallery in Purth March 21 – mentioned at the very end.

Coachella Walls: Date Farmers by Medvin Sobio

Hey man, ¿Qué haces? For this Coachella street-art-related event the dude Medvin Sobio is setting the scene again with  unscripted social outtakes and interactions are positioned as the main story – and he is framing it with this jukebox music. Yes, this is where The Eagles are national treasures, Marvin Gaye is a nice reminder of a time when singing about the environment could still get airplay, and MJ is always a party starter. Errrbuddy get up!

1. SWOON – The Run Up

3. Ben Eine and “Amusement”
4. “Salgado” From Sparky Stories

BSA Special Feature: SWOON – The Run Up

“The things that drew me to the city are both the intensity and the harshness,” says Street Artist Swoon in this new video from documentary filmmaker Joey Garfield. After more than a decade and half, she’s thriving on both and still in Brooklyn. The footage is of an earlier Swoon and during her initial forays out into the street to wheatpaste her hand cut creations on tattered walls and rusted doorways.  It is a glimpse of a young artist in New York, and it will ring familiar to the new arrivals to this harsh intense city to see her balancing a bag of clothes on her handle bars and crossing 4th Avenue on her way to the laundromat.

In his description of the piece on Vimeo Garfield says that it was filmed “before the term Street Art” which may indicate the 1960s since books were published with the term in the 70s and Richard Goldstein wrote a big piece about it for the Village Voice in the early 80s. This video looks looks like it was shot in the mid 00s, but we take his point to mean that the current explosion was occurring around the very time Swoon was beginning as well.

In fact, that is what makes this rough collection of very personal moments with Swoon on the cusp of her first big solo show so refreshing. As we watch her prep for the Dietch Projects installation and she observes that it is much larger than she had guessed it would get, we are all anticipating her new installation opening at the Brooklyn Museum next week. Similarly the scale of “Submerged Motherlands” has expanded amazingly and it is only beginning to match that of Swoon’s imagination, and her will.

Medvin Sobio announces Coachella Walls

Medvin Sobio knows how to present a story before it even happens. A co-curator of Wynwood Walls one year and the Boneyard Project, Sobio debuts this video to announce the first annual COACHELLA WALLS, hosted by The Date Farmers – an event which is described as “an arts driven community revitalization project”. The video is shot like a film and sets the stage for very good things to come.

Participating artists schedule to participate are The Date Farmers (Coachella), El Mac (Arizona), Nunca (Brazil), Saner (Mexico), Andrew Hem (Cambodia), Liqen (Spain), Albert Reyes (Los Angeles), Vyal Reyes (Los Angeles), Sego (Mexico), The Phantom (Los Angeles), Jim Darling (Texas), and more.

In this gentle meditation by Edition Slurp we find Miss Van painting and langorously stroking the canvas with brush while she was at Wynwood Walls in December. Read more about the event Women Rock Wynwood Walls at Miami Art Basel 2013

Cane Morto + Ema Jons

A night time escape captured by El Pacino and Tanguy Bombonera appears to accompany Italian bruta expressionistas Cane Morta in a large scale night time collabo with Ema Jons while traffic whizzes by obliviously.

Virtuous Reality * Adam Void and Ryan Seslow

To file under experimental: a collaboration by practitioners of art in the street that merges the styles of both Adam VOID and Ryan Seslow. Sound and vision chops together a pastiche of images to lull you to sleep and to jolt you awake you from your hypnotic solid state dream life.

In Memory of Shawn Whisenant by Spencer Keeton Cunningham

“You can grab your skateboard and your camera and go outside, and the world is yours,” says Whisenant to the camera as he describes one of the perfect days in the street.

A fine and poignant tribute to artist, skater, photographer and friend to many on San Francisco’s streets, Shawn passed away earlier this month.  The stills, music clips, interviews and commentary give a sense of the open approach he had to creativity, to art making, to others – and here these reminders of him are pulled together in an endearing and regardful way. Our thoughts go out to Shawn’s family and friends during this time.

BSA Special Feature: Borondo and Narcissus

In this video by Fabiano Caputo we see a London installation beside a busy watery channel between two nondescript bridges. It is simple concept executed brilliantly and presented without gimmickry or chest thumping – even though the inspiration is that fella who fell in love with his own reflection.

Fukushima: Happened 3 Years Ago

A helpful reminder that radiation lasts thousands of years. Any questions?

A Wynwood Timelapse – Miami, Puerto Rico, and Spain in Effect

Doesn’t look like much is happening at the beginning but the weather is always nice even when it isn’t in Miami. Then suddenly the details emerge and the composition makes sense. The collaborative wall includes Trek6 (Miami / Puerto Rico), DonRimx (New York / Puerto Rico),Txemy (Spain) & Separ (Puerto Rico).

Ian Strange: FINAL ACT

A film, photography and installation based project by street artist Kid Zoom, now establishing himself as visual artist Ian Strange.

These houses condemned for demolition in Christchurch, New Zealand provide fodder for artmaking after a devastating earthquake in 2011 made 16,000 of them unsafe to inhabit. Taking influence from artists like Gordon Matta Clarke (see below), who was doing his site-specific “building cuts” in the 1960s and 1970s, Strange brings this work to a more camera and exhibition-friendly level by hiring construction professionals to selectively remove portions of the facade and bringing a brand name cinematographer as partner to record it with environmental back lighting that causes the family homes to glow from within.

“FINAL ACT is in part an archival documentation of these Christchurch homes and a continuation of the artist’s ongoing exploration into the home and its role, particularly in Western culture, as a social icon.”

Louis Jensen Profiles Ronin Tomoshima in The Mission

The continuation of a series whose Kickstarter we supported called “Spraying Bricks”

Says Jensen, “I originally had no intention of producing a film on Ronin, I was simply picking up some general footage of San Francisco. However, I was inspired by his story so thought it necessary to share. Art is the freedom to express, there are many more creatives in The Mission who are just like Ronin. So if you’re passing through The Mission on your travels, spare a penny or two for the local artists, who each day are making this world a colourful and vibrant home.”

BSA Special Feature: TOOFLY in Miami

“There is a different dynamic that takes place when women get together and paint or build or create something,” explains Queens born Toofly as she scales the ladder in Miami during Art Basel this year. The short by Alexandra Henry gives voice to the artist, designer and organizer as she describes coming up in the 1990s wall painting surrounded primarily by dudes. Now as she moves to a different stage and embraces her Ecuadorean roots, Toofly is joined by a new generation of women who are laying claim to the street and adding their voices to the conversation.

8 Artists, One Day in La Perla

An overcast day in Old San Juan is still better than a sunny one inside an office cubicle, ya herd? Here’s a gently rolling survey of a community called La Perla, who in one day received new gifts bestowed from Alexis Diaz, Faith47, Axel Void, Filio, Inti, Conor Harrington, Poteleche, and Franco Jaz. Captured by Tost Fims, it is free of so many of the video making conventions of Street Art film-making that it may be pulling the genre in a new direction.

UNO in Bolonga, Italy

UNO and Matteo Talone take wheatpasting to a new very long expanse in Bologna, hand coloring meters and meters of pop inspired black and white image/text patterning for the Cheap Festival.

Phlegm / Run / Christiaan Nagel in London

A teaser for a series of films (Last Breath) that will be made documenting the beautification of soon-to-be demolished buildings in London. Touring the remains of structural decrepitude is not new, but doing so artfully like this is.

Our little Valentine to you …

The sweet yoga couple Kristina Serna and Joerael Elliott, who go by the name of Soulvision, show us some zen-like poses on the roof while Joerael takes a break from painting a mural. “We don’t have money for much, we just hang around,” says the soundtrack by Kotchy.

Spidertag in Madrid: Mucho Verde, Nuevo Rojo

Whip out the midi tech muzak and grab the suitcase full of yarn because estamos en Madrid, kiddies. In the urban squatted garden of Solarpiés, Spidertag found a great wall and some vegetation with which to begin of a new minimalism in his work. Seems simple enough, but that’s when it is deceiving.

HotTea in St. Paul

Yep, Hottea is back with one strategy for shaking off the cold.

2. Story Of Abstract Ritual From Jeff Frost
3. Boohaha & Don Forty: Μαινάδες-Maenads in Athens, Greece.
4. Pixel Pancho in Santurce

BSA Special Feature: PLOTBOT Ken hits Acid Tanks

In this film by Isabelle Petit we can revel in the physical and material qualities of paint, dripping, smearing, speckled and strewn. With your air mask on you can  accompany these urban explorers as they venture into the carcass of industry that lays barren and toxic, corrosive and threatening to life. It’s a drums and bass soundtrack that accompanies the bubbling, spraying, steaming pastiche and the Berlin based Plotblot Ken gives an ominous darkness with his own industry in the detritus of that city, but really it could be anywhere in the abandoned industrial areas that litter our globe.

Story Of Abstract Ritual From Jeff Frost

“Hi I’m Jeff, an artist based out of Southern California. This is the story about how I became a nomad and embarked on an endless adventure,” begins photographer and director Jeff Frost as he describes his very visually stimulating and magical dance of inverted Joshua trees with light, motion, and sound — and many volunteers.

Boohaha & Don Forty: Μαινάδες-Maenads. Athens, Greece.

Oh no! It’s more foreboding music and broken glass as the camera hovers and slowly inches across the floor! Fallen leaves, dry leaves, desiccated branches with leaves, fluttering leaves. Then forms in darkness rapidly move in the shadows, maybe sawing something, maybe jumping on or stabling something. Don’t be afraid, it’s just a temporary sculpture installation in an abandoned space in Greece… with an excellent soundtrack.

Pixel Pancho in Santurce, Puerto Rico.

And to round out the collection with one more haunted and futuristic soundtrack, Pixel Pancho and Tost Films treat you to a stop action vision of how he creates one of his insectual future disaster scenes while the crazy cloud atmospherics of nature and post-production blurring are punctuated by the truculent punching of drumsticks and the sidewinding slathering of rusty razoring guitars.

One of the females on the scene who consistently turns in ever more expansive and high quality work. No need for bragadoccio, just skills, which she has for miles. Here is a new video of her painting a mural for a business improvement district project in downtown Hollywood, Florida, directed by Miguel Endara.

Art as a Weapon: Trailer

“Street Art, Creativity, & Revolution collide in this beautifully shot film about art’s ability to create change. The film opens on the politically charged Burma border at the first school teaching Sreet Art as a form of non-violent struggle. Under the threat of imprisonment and torture, the students use stencils, spray paint and wheatpaste to engage the public and question authority. 8200 miles away artist, Shepard Fairey is painting a 30’ mural of a Burmese monk for the same reasons and to support the struggle for Democracy in Burma.” from Breadtruck Films.

Now screening :

1. Artful Ad Busting: Vermibus Melt Ads and Minds Across Europe
2. HotTea is an MN Original: Bares Soul for Public Television

BSA Special Feature: Vermibus Replaces Lightbox Ads with Art

“Dissolving Europe”

Ad Busting work on the streets just doesn’t happen enough these days, does it?  Seems like we are slammed from every angle by ads on every surface in every social and professional situation, music video, televison show, and movie. They are so insidiously well designed to take up space in our minds that we can’t flush them out with Liquid Plumbr or even Drano.  See?

So how remarkable this campaign by Vermibus is, who tells us of his rather artful brandalism with a scenic video trip  – whereby he replaces ads with remade versions of themselves. Traveling by train, he dons an orange vest and carries official looking customized tools to hijack these slick ad blocks that guild the tonier neighborhoods in Europe. “It was around 6 Countries over 18 days,” he tells BSA, “and I made 100 Interventions.”

Like a Francis Bacon with swirling brush strokes of turpentine carving into skin and tracing eye sockets and cheek bones in circular motion, Vermibus melts the flesh and reallocates adipose like a plastic surgeon of the grotesquerie. Occasionally he smears away the entire face, leaving a quiet storm in its place. While the transformations of the unspeakably beautiful into a cabinet of curiosity does undoubtedly trouble an onlooker, the glow from behind blows the mind in one swoop while you hurriedly look for a logo or a tagline or explanation that makes it all okay.

Other pieces are more impressionist than disfigured, meant to be blurred pleasantly in the minds eye, emblematic of an ideal.  But usually it is an ideal that has run amuck, and thanks to great video by Xar Lee and a sound track entitle “A Painter’s Journey” by
music composer Marcello De Francisci, you may reconsider the effect of ubiquitous advertising in our built environment and our minds.

HotTea is an MN Original

Minneapolis based Street Artist HOTTEA gets the documentary treatment here from PBS/TPT and MNoriginal. A very thoughtful and informative background look at how he does his work, how he thinks about it, conceptualizes it, sees it.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-740-HOTTEA-Screenshot-Jan2014

AND you will find out where that name came from courtesy of a dramatic re-enactment!  Without spoiling the end, he gets tasered. Oh dang I think I just blew it.

Two thumbs up for frank vulnerability and long live HOTTEA!
