BSA Special Feature: Roma Street Art Tribes as Captured by Dioniso Punk

Gwen Stacy Parts I and II

Disorderly, discordant, and richly chaotic, these two videos are centered around the Italian street art paintings and artists whom you will recognize from our earlier postings on community/gallery organized urban art programming – but within the context of historical art publicly displayed, peoples movements, patronage, fascism, the classics.

Dioniso Punk allows everyone to talk – neighbors, artists, organizers, curators, public philosophers, elected officials, psychologists, sociologists, entrepreneurs, posers, professors, historians, students, an opera singer, the petite bourgeoisie, international visitors and hapless puzzled opinionated locals.

Discussions at panels cut into impassioned discussions by senior women in the courtyard or didactic examinations in the street – some for illustration, others for whimsy, none to be ignored. More of a fact finding mission than cogent analysis, you may find it difficult to follow the narrative and so it is better to let go and allow yourself be battered by the insights and observations delivered with the jumpy cuts and uncompleted thoughts and discussions, preferring instead to sink into the tribe of the humans, here selectively displayed for your pleasure and hopefully, edification.

(turn on the CC (closed captioning) if you do not speak Italian)

Featuring interviews with Solo, Gaia, Diamond 0707, Maupal, Best Ever, Bol23, Jerico, Guerrilla Spam Sen One, Sabrina, Dan, Stefano Antonelli (999 Contemporary,) Marta Ugolini (Galleria Ca’ D’Oro), Agathe Jaubourg (Pasolini Pigneto), Alìn Costache (YUT!), Edoardo Martino (Villaggio Globale), and Eleonora Zaccagnino (Acid Drop).

Special Guests: Mp5, Alice Pasquini, Mr. Thoms, Jessica Stewart, Sandro Fiorentini (La Bottega del Marmoraro).

BSA Special Feature: Joe Caslin and The Castle

Appearing on a privately owned castle façade in the days leading up to the referendum in May that made Ireland the first country in the world to vote for same-sex marriage, Joe Caslin’s illustration of two long trestled beauties appeared here as a counterpart to a coupled male version he did in Dublin. Caherkinmonwee Castle in Co Galway (circa 1450) has mottled exterior that transforms the portrait into a monochromatic painting from a distance.

You’ll be happy to know that the adhesive is made with potato starch.

Of course, it’s all in the planning, the 14 hours of pasting, camera work and of course the soundtrack – here longingly, celtically yours from Róisín O. Rather melts your limestone heart, doesn’t it?

Luxury Living

Popular in cultural conversations in cities these days is the vision of the artist as unwitting gentrifier who, upon losing his lease is dismayed by his own effect on a neglected urban neighborhood — now overrun by construction cranes and opportunists with dollars in their eyes. This dramatically scored mini-adventure is the only way that some artists can still afford to visit the neighborhood they once made attractive and hip.

BISSER in Williamsburg:

Speaking of rapidly gentrified artist neighborhoods, here is Bisser visiting Williamsburg, Brooklyn to drop some serious art for the enjoyment of  those new bankers and corporate professionals. The new arrivals may take friends to pose for selfies in front of this mural on their way to brunch but would otherwise keep creatives like Bisser perpetually insecure as a 2nd class graphics “freelancer” without sick days, vacation, or health benefits in their corporate offices across the river.

La Machination: KOLEO

A sweet stencillist illustration that suddenly takes additional meaning in this brief recap of a new piece by KOLEO.

According to the descripton: “KOLEO presents “La Machination” (machination: machine / plot), a mural where automatons create organic creatures, treated badly. The creatures get together to become one and fight back. Then, they separate again to infiltrate the machines and destroy them from the inside. Later, a child finds a broken automaton and starts to repair it. The mural can be seen as an allegory of the wrongdoings humans can do to each other, that they end up fighting, before the next generation forgets their history and repeat the same mistakes.”

We start this week off with some home made subway train porn with a soundtrack by the Brazilian Girls singing in French. It’s a mesmerizing reverie with some good shots of 5 Ptz.

Jet Martinez, Painter & Muralist

American painter and muralist Jet Martinez from Oakland talking about his show last month in Denver – his influences from Mexican culture, folk arts, and contemporary culture.

Monochrome: Sofles

Great writer of course. That’s why you’ll endure the advertising for the paint company here.

Mutiny of Colours – Iranian Street Art Documentary

Take a look at this interesting project, and over-the-top special effects that are meant to be comedic, if not darkly reinforcing some stereotypes you may have. It’s not easy to make a documentary and this one is about a burgeoning scene in Iran, a country where the penalties for graffiti are draconian.

HULA paints “Imua”

Follow Hawaii born artist Hula on his surfboard as he paints “Imua”.

Epic Rap Battle : Ninja Turtles V. Dudes of the Renaissance

Yo, did you see our piece on Owen Dippie’s new mural yesterday? Somebody sent us this epic rap battle between the masters of Renaissance painting and the cartoon action heroes of your childhood. Cowabunga dudes!

“Rubble Kings” Opens Today: Gangs, Graffiti, Hip-Hop in 1970s NYC

An outstanding recounting of the fierce gang culture born of despair and “white flight” that blighted New York City, Rubble Kings helps put in perspective the evolution of a people being pushed out of the American Dream grabbing it by the balls and reclaiming it as their own, remaking it in their image.

That may be the overly romantic view of an unjust and needlessly brutal time full of violence and murder, with innocent everyday people caught in the middle as victims. And certainly as oppressed as these former gang members were, the thought may cross your mind that the heroic roles depicted in this story are reserved for one gender almost exclusively. That said, props to the director Shan Nicholson that Rubble Kings presents a meaningful and compelling context for the unwinding of the social, political, institutional constructs that shook folks to the bone; an economic violence that decimated neighborhoods and communities.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-Copyright-Perry_Kretz_3_Rubble-Kings-740-2

Rubble Kings. © Perry Kretz

Well edited storytelling with actual footage, pertinent interviews, and invented animated scenarios, the story traces the evolution of the Black and Latino experience following the killing of the Kennedy brothers, Dr. King, and Malcolm X, and the death of hope for a people who were just starting to see a chance at sitting at the table of equality, an opportunity at a middle class existence – even as the Vietnam War started claiming many young lives. Defenseless against unresponsive politicians, obtuse bull-headed urban planning, corrupt real estate owners who burned their buildings and contemptible landlords ignoring their responsibilities, high unemployment, a booming drug economy, and a general perception that the police were working against them, these street gangs became a new force of order and disorder; the kings of the rubble.

Aside from the lawlessness in the face of abandonment, the John Leguziamo narrated documentary features a well arched story that presents some crucial insight into origins of  the birth of the Hip Hop movement: a grassroots-based all-city community reconciliation that enabled new coalitions and drew directly upon what became Hip Hop’s central tenets including Emceeing (MCing), DJing, Breaking, and Graffiti. With emotional and riveting accounts from gang members like leaders of the 2,500-strong Bronx based gang Ghetto Brothers, Benjamin Melendez and Carlos Suarez, you are able to see the dynamic tension between neighborhoods and philosophies, the depth of turmoil on the streets, and the weight of responsibility leaders assumed.

Musically a direct connection is drawn to the Afro-Cuban and Latin funk of the late 60s/early 70s blending with rock, eventually incorporating disco and electronic influences; a true melting pot worthy of a New York cultural movement. Also interviewed are musical pioneers like DJ Kool Herc, credited with originating hip hop music in the early 1970s in The Bronx, and Afrika Bambaataa, whose ZULU Nation is credited for integrating the needs of the community with inspiration and positive aspirations, weaving it with the creative spirit and a desire for an inclusive common culture celebrating style, strength, and power.

Rubble Kings opens today in New York at AMC Empire 25, in Los Angeles at AMC Burbank 8, and Chicago at AMC Country Club Hills 16. A wider national release will follow. It is also available on iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, GooglePlay, Sony Entertainment Network and VHX.

INDECLINE: “This Land Was Our Land” (Largest Illegal Graffiti Piece In The World)

Saying they have just completed the largest illegal graffiti in the world, the anonymous INDECLINE took six days in April to complete this half mile wide statement on a disused military site in the California’s Mojave Desert.

Impressive as hell of course, and Woody Guthrie is an American hero and yes this land belonged to other people before it was claimed by the US and it has been severely damaged by the war machine. But outstanding questions here are: which eight graffiti heads can afford 6 days, 250 gallons of paint, sprayers, power leaf blowers, range rovers, and a $20K budget to pull this off? Also is the name related to the Adobe Creative Suite at all?

Read a good interview with them on VICE.

Al Karama: Boa Mistura Reverse Paints the Message in Casbah

This old town in Algiers called Casbah has been a World Heritage Site, as declared by UNESCO in 1992 but it has fallen into disrepair. The Mediterranean port is known for its white painted facades and features, something Boa Mistura says they found quite poetic. In their customary fashion the collective finds a way to write inspiring messages while preserving the history and character of the town.

Mutiny Of Colours: (Trailer) “Peace A Message From Iran”

Coming next week the Kickstarter for the filmmakers who are creating Mutiny of Colours. They have run out of money to finish their documentary and are reaching out to ask for support. The film follows Iranian street artists who are targeted for attention by the authorities for “promoting Satanism” among other accusations. Their fundraising starts June 28th, and we’ll tell you about it again when we get closer. In the mean time here is a teaser for the unfinished project from the directors, Zeinab & Paliz.

BSA Special Feature: Born and Bred: The Rise of Street Art in Bushwick

It’s all about Joe! While you were looking for a brunch spot or a beard wax or simply at your navel, Joe took an opportunity to connect artists with walls and did more for the “scene” in Bushwick than an L Train full of pilgrims ever could. He cleared the way for a slew of local and international artists and writers looking for an opportunity to exercise their creative speech and courted the press with his local native personal story so often that you can imagine a Netflix series will be next.

In our mind, Joe is just a true cultural worker who probably saved many peeps from taking themselves too seriously. There was, no doubt, plenty of Street Art and graff in the neighborhood for years before he started getting walls for artists but this guy more-or-less opened the flood gates that answered a need many had for a welcoming public space to see and discuss art.

There is no actual “collective” unless you think of the collective audience of old-timers, new kids, and tourists who have been able to participate and contemplate and consider the creative spirit that is alive in each of us and on display here in many different iterations. That is who is called the collective WE.

Collettivo FX and Their Enormous Wall in Castellarano

This is an actual collective called Collettivo FX (Marco AvantGarde Cavazzoni and Emilio Campana) who slaughtered a wall with animals in the municipality of Castellarano, a town of 13,000 in Northern Italy. The drone cam shots and the sound track by Brian Eno are masterful and mature, adding to the scope of the collective’s undertaking.

Lek and Sowat Show How to Make a Print

Lithography enhanced by hand, this is a mixture of 19th century know-how and contemporary art. If you want to know how an art print is made, now you know.

TELLAS at Altrove, courtesy @BlindeyeFactory

You did you see our piece on the Altrove Festival yesterday? – Largely Geometric : Altrove ’15 Delivers Abstract Murals to Catanzaro. If you did you saw the work of Tellas, and this is a spritely video recounting the wall in its creation.

Sh*t Brooklyn People Say

Okay before you get your attitude all snarly, this is just one slice of Brooklyn. Brooklyn has something like a hundred languages being spoken on the streets and in the stores and hair salons and funeral parlors and restaurants and 54% don’t even speak English at home. That’s a fact. But this is still funny. One slice. You gotta better video? Send it to us!

Rap Quotes ATL: Dirty South Edition

We’re here in the Waffle House in the dirty south talking about putting up site-specific rap lyrics all around Atlanta. Pass the syrup please. This Rap Quotes project has taken you from New York to LA and Philly and now to the gateway. It’s a treasure hunt, it’s educational, it’s musical, historical, geographical, features strip clubs, – fun for the whole dysfunctional family! Big ups to Jay Shells and Animal New York for keeping this flame high!

Narcelio Grud – Cinetic Graffiti

The latest project incorporating hand made creations and artistic vision, Grud may have perplexed more participants than titilated with this one; a hand-powered sound installation.

DourOne in South Park LA by Phil Sanchez

The neighborhood of South Park hired DourOne to paint this mural in Los Angeles through their business improvement initiative. The commercial artist from Madrid has done a number of jobs with alcohol brands so his chops are smooth and this multi-sliced portrait is meant to evoke the character of various neighborhoods in LA.

Haeler Keeping Detroit Alive

Another entry from Animal New York this week – the graffiti artist Haeler in Detroit, where all things are running wild right now as entrepreneurs, artists, prospectors, and snake oil salesmen are laying claim to the bones that the banks left. Sidenote: why do people sound like Darth Vader in these videos?

This costume shop in Los Angeles got very lucky this spring when Barcelona based Miss Van visited and asked them if they would like their facade freshly painted. Along with local talents Victor Castillo and Easo Andrews, Miss Van created a bit of costumed magic that will undoubtedly increase sales.

The video is directed, shot, and edited by “Birdman”.

Rallitox Invites You to Walk Over Immigrants for Free.

A social experiment in Berlin this March by Street Artist Rallitox invited passersby to walk on top of Immigrants. A politically and socially charged topic in many countries today, Germany is struggling to strike a balance about where it stands on immigration. It is surprising how many people were willing to try it out, and how many nervously smiled as an upswelling of conflicting emotions were undoubtedly released in all participants, including those who watched.

Kinetoscope: Angelina Christina x Ease One

Slab City is sometimes billed as an isolated desolated off-the-grid sort of place in California so it was an adventure for Christina Angelina and Ease One discovered the remains of this abandoned water tank and transformed it into a circular mural. They call it The Kinetoscope.

Cranio in Breda, Netherlands for Graphic Design Festival

Sort of odd for a festival with this kind of name on our site but we clearly acknowledge the continuum of creativity extends beyond labels today. Brazilian street artist Cranio here provides a look at his technique with cans for creating his instantly recognizable figures.

Michael Beerens: Captivity and Freedom

A community/business improvement initiative for the city of Richmond, Virginia, the past few years have featured a diverse roster of talents who dig the vibe and paint the town. This feel-good recap of the 2014 mural program gives an idea how initiatives like this can invigorate a local scene and how connections are made as a result.

A monochromatic wall can help tie together different styles of painting and writing. In this ad for a mural painting service, these street artists give a great demo of collaborative work on a hundred meter wall in Collingwood, Melbourne.

Cane Morto & Borondo Combo In Lisbon

You can never tell how much of this wild-man flailing of the arms and manic yelping at the sky and alleged illicit portrait painting is genuine with Cane Morto – but surely you can tell that there is a screw loose somewhere when looking at this teaser for their upcoming movie.

BSA Special Feature: C215 In the Footsteps of His Favorite Painter: Caravaggio.

Here is a new short documentary that follows the unique pathway of Caravaggio, as told by one of his biggest fans, the street artist and master stencillist C215 visiting Palermo. He says he is sure Caravaggio would be a street artist if he were alive today. Who would argue?

Quick Tour of Street Art of East London: BUSH

We get many video submissions every week and this one really caught our eye because it features two fellows whom you are convinced are going to be singing the lyrics to the soundtrack at any moment — but in fact they never do anything of the sort.

Perhaps they are just telecommunicating the lyrics to us. Possibly they are here to adorn the street art and graffiti, or provide a measuring guage for us to more accurately estimate the various sizes of aerosol pieces. Expressionless and unfazed, they could be modeling their handsome fashions. Perhaps they are protecting the cameraman from thugs who could sneak up on him unannounced. You just don’t know.

“My work is low-fi and I work on no budget and work with unsigned musicians and reaching out to the wider creative community only for this video as I feel there hasn’t been one like this created out there about London,” says Eric, who made the piece. That last bit is probably true. Eric, thank you for sharing. Regards to the actors, and thanks for the tour.

Vinz: Feel Free Project  (NSFW)

“The naked people with birds heads represent freedom. They are naked because they have nothing to hide.” explains the street artist Vinz, who was adopted by the gallery system nearly seconds after these bare breasted birds first began appearing on public walls. This is a good opportunity to hear the artist speak for himself and to understand the various visual codes present in his work and their corresponding meanings.

Woozy in Athens: Moving Shadows

This car burning during protests against the Greek government takes on a second meaning as street artist Woozy walks up to the burned metal and plastic carcass and begins painting upon it. The shock of the reality leaves you stunned, even as he begins to transform the charred car with art.

BSA readers will dig this animation of David Bowie’s “Life on Mars,” Gladys Hulot, also known as Hyrtis, brings Bowie to slink through the cracks and around the concrete underground, dripping with piercing drama, and plenty of distinctive style. The voice here is stunningly replaced with a musical saw, giving the chameleon just one more layer to his multiple identities.  Not precisely street art, but Bowie’s ties to the street are undisputed.

The Reinvention of Normal: Dominic Wilcox

“By doing the ridiculous, something else might come of it,” says Dominic Wilcox, and we couldn’t agree more.

“Just off the wall. And that is what I’ve always encouraged in him.” says Dominic’s dad.

“I had this idea to come up with something creative every day for 30 days,” says the artist.

And this is how we all move forward.

Rallitox: Chicken Murder on Williamsburg Street Corner

Insert joke about hipsters here. Actually, this is Williamsburg – hipsters left a few years ago and only return to reminisce. Nonetheless this installation and the blasé reactions of the passive consumer class to Rallitox’s installation are illuminating. Please take your photo and move on.

Also interesting to note, Rallitox reports that a dead animal is cheaper than aerosol paint or markers for making art.
