BSA Special Feature: Christian Omodeo Talks About “Street Art – Banksy & Co.”

It’s impossible to enter a chatroom or a bar frequented by graffiti/Street Art types today without some mention of this exhibition in Italy. The topic centers around an unresolved, largely heretofore undiscussed question of any removal of illegally placed art from property for any purposes except to destroy it. Here one of the curators of the exhibit, Christian Omodeo takes you on a tour of the complete exhibit discussing tags, photography, collectors habits, the relevance of an object as a conveyor of culture. Finally the interviewer, Good Guy Boris, broaches the subject of works taken from the urban wild. The topic is tackled head-on with Omodeo very clearly laying out a case for …

Guido Van Helten on Abandoned Silos in Australia

A beautifully shot feel-good story of a small town farming community decimated by corporate industrial farming in Brim in the Wimmera region of Victoria, Australia. It is a familiar story about the disappearing family farm and our control of the food supply that has happened across much of the so-called First World but most people still haven’t connected the dots. Here artist Guido Van Helten focuses on the local story, the left-behind individuals affected directly by economic downturn and loss of community – and paints them heroically across an architectural archetype that rises triumphantly above the land, a row of grain silos. Juddy Roller produces, Round 3 Creative directs.

CTVà Street Fest 2016 Recap

Highlights of the CVTA Festival – Street Fest in Civitacampomarano in Campobasso (Italy). A small town of 400 celebrated for 4 days in April with Biancoshock (Italy) , David de la Mano (Uruguay) , Pablo S. Herrero (Spain) , Icks (Italy) , Hitnes (Italy), and ONE (Italy).

BSA Special Feature: Jorge Rodriguez Gerarda: Changing The Face Of Barcelona

“It’s not necessarily street art and its not necessarily the known directions of contemporary art,” says Jorge Rodriguez Gerarda as he describes his mural paintings of a woman he photographed. His critical eye toward the way images and messages are marketed to us by advertisers is not new, he says, having devised ways to culture-jam and deface ads in the public space in New York in the past. Now he has developed a voice that in praise of the everyday person and is giving it volume on this vast façade in Barcelona.

Nychos X Udon Lords Crew in Taiwan

Building and pumping adrenaline is the cohesive device that ties together these images of people in action and the audio outtakes from adventure films, evangelists, propaganda and advertising slogans. Nychos loves to rip the mortal coil open for you to examine its contents and his metaphor is the innards of animals. This vicious/comedic somewhat exploding dragon is in itself a symbol to generations of people and by juxtaposing it with text based graffiti lettering and these intercut messages you know he is examining the beast from as many angles as possible. Director Cory Ring captures this quote in Taiwan: “But what we know is art is not a crime. The crime is the state of mind” to end the brief but effective visual and aural onslaught.

ERICAILCANE / Mexico City

Rapid drums and bass and reggae keep the painters animated for the creation of “The Rabbit & the Fox”, a new mural by the Italian Street Artist Ericailcane in Mexico City.

Images and editing by Alice Bettolo.

Northwest London’s Pref takes us into his studio and onto walls in a test of how he interprets words thrown to him freestyle. His overlapping word and letter styling is compelling and his point of view is clear. But hang in there for the paper-cut collages!

BSA Special Feature: Os Gemeos Mural: Hangar Bicocca Building

Graffiti writers and assorted urban artists have a romantic fixation with the steel monsters that snake through our cities and across the backyards and fields of entire countries. For the urban art culture subways and freights have distinct but overlapping associations with freedom, wanderlust, a daredevil mentality, … and Brazilian brothers Os Gemeos have just created their latest ode to the subway train in Milan – almost as big as any writer’s dream.

Tilt: Voyage – Aller Biennale Marrakech

We had the honor of seeing this sawed in half car with luggage stacked on top in Jardin Rouge with French graffiti artist TILT in February and to hear the stories about how it was made. The first part of a 2 part story about migration, families, city fok, country folk, and the stories we tell – this amazing sculpture stands on its own.

Ugo Rondinone: Seven Magic Mountains

An astounding large scale “earth work” by Ugo Rondinone is taking place outside of Las Vegas in the desert. This informational video lays out the scope of the two year installation produced by Art Production Fund, New York and the Nevada Museum of art in Reno. Curiously, the artist himself does not appear in the video.

BSA Special Feature: La Pintura. Graffiti Documentary. Trailer

“You cannot totally enslave human nature. We will always thrive.”

“The city probably hates us. I don’t give a fuck about them because they are all as corrupt as shit.”

La Pintura is a newly released graffiti documentary (series) about the motivation, purpose and commitment of Latin and South African graffiti writers, and the context is helpful for understanding the risks that are taken as well as the drive to “get up” repeatedly. This story has been attempted many times – La Pintura looks like an action film driven by storylines and examination of social factors that form the subculture.

Saving Banksy: Trailer

Another Banksy-driven documentary, of which there will probably be enough for a festival before it’s all over. This one focuses on the people who endeavor to take them off the street to sell.

Spencer Keeton Cunningham and Lauren YS go “Batty”

Because, you know, who doesn’t want a Zombie Bat to get wall time? With their colorful personalities and riveting stories? These two Melboune based artists recently did this one and made a video to capture it.

Wall To Wall: Benalla, Australia

A haven for slick murals by commercial painters and illustrators and Street Artists in Benalla, Victoria , Wall To Wall is a successful venture by a mural business to bring new art to the streets and hopefully more commercial work for the artists and organizers. Great choice of the WAR mix at the beginning.

BSA Special Feature: Carlos Cruz-Diaz & Spectra by Selina Miles

Optical art, public experimentation, scientific research, kinetic engineering have all contributed to the half century of study by artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. He’s “been doing street art longer than most people have been alive,” says the narrator.

Screen-Brooklyn-Street-Art-E-Carlos-cruz-diaz-selina-miles-740Shot-2016-04-15-at-9.21.23-AM

Now 92, based in Panama, he continues to work in-studio with geometric abstraction putting to the test color and its measuring its effects on us and our built environment. A current generation of street artists are invited in studio to work with their hands, to conceptualize visually and oversee production of their work in material and form. The initial contemplation evolves into a way of thinking and a way of imagining the work and the artists place in relation to public space that transcends image making and creates a different dialogue. Screen-Brooklyn-Street-Art-C-Carlos-cruz-diaz-selina-miles-740Shot-2016-04-15-at-9.21.23-AM

Hearing Mr. Diez compare this moment of convergence in technology, communications, and creativity to the 1960s is undoubtedly an inspiring spark to the generation that will continue forward. Now that the artists have grasped the material world, they delve into the virtual. Like many artists and creators who are working with the newest tools of virtual reality, this collection of street artists are still experimenting – all the time realizing how appreciation is rooted in the perceptual abilities rather than the materiality. One of the speakers talks about being at the starting line, but in many ways it is clear that race already has already begun.

Djalouz – Petites Chroniques Urbaine

Parisian graphic designer turned graffiti artist Djalouz has a unique volumetric approach to his wildstyle shards that envelope the city’s remaining phonebooths. He explains how he fell in love with a medium of expression that he is committed to while he’s sketching out a Winnie the Pooh character. Stay a little longer and see the wildness of his expressive 3D forms that crawl across every surface, including the ground.

Between The Lines With RISK

Risk talks about his evolution from a kid in New Orleans sketching in his notebook at school to getting up with a crew in LA, painting all over public space and property to gain a higher profile and retain the thrill of hit-and-run, and some highlights of his professional career. In route from illegal to legal he developed a reverence for color, form, and technical experimentation and aspirations for museum quality work and large scale public sculpture. Just don’t tag his stuff please.

BSA Special Feature:VHILS: Debris in Hong Kong . NOWNESS

Vhils has made a high quality short movie based in Hong Kong that asks many of the existential questions of workers in the developed world in 2016. Crisply told with an attenuated attention level, VHILS walks you through his creative endeavors while revealing the conflicting feeling that accompany the frequently soulless existence of a capitalist race. The tightly clapping soundtrack is also soulfully sexy, the layers are blasted away with punishing style, and there is plenty of debris.

“Shiny” from Daniel Cloud Campos

Eye candy for the animation set, you may never toss your clothes on the floor thoughtlessly again. There is a story line here, but you may lose it while marveling at the creativity flying around the room.

Pøbel and Donald Trump in Hollywood

Pøbel took a walk down Hollywood Boulevard to make a political statement in Donald Trump’s star. The valley girls took one second to look up from their phones and like oh my god surreeusslaay they like so freaked out I am not even kidding.

Also, what is the criterion for getting a star exactly?

BSA Special Feature: Herakut: “Masters Of Wrong”

HERA + AKUT=HERAKUT – a back-to-basics introduction to Herakut today, since new fans are joining the fold and need to become acquainted with a duo that has been on the street around the world for years and has been moving into galleries for a while also.

Here at the white box Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles for their “Masters of Wrong” show it is a different view entirely from the street surely, including paintings evenly spaced across white walls as well as an area for a more immersive environment.

Outside, “The wolf that wins is the one you feed” is the Cherokee wisdom they paint on the side of the local high school, and in the commercialization of the Street Art world, we see this enmeshed dichotomy more daily.

Let the softly kinetic paddling of the marimba escort you through their political and social commentary, now more overt and obvious and  satirical than ever, as they show you their new show and their new works for exhibition and for sale.

Shark Toof by Koncrete

Good to hear the story directly from the LA artist about the deliberations that go on when creating the image. It is interesting to see what the construction is, and how skillfully Shark Toof integrates his formal painting training into the vocabulary of graffiti and the street. His sharks are pleasantly realistic and scary and comical all at once – how is that possible?

HM Heads – Copenhagen. Spray Daily

And for those of you who are bored with the legal walls, here is a collection of videos of aerosol train pieces that appear to be largely illegal and immense. HM Heads in Copenhagen lead the tale with stealthy crawling through the weeds on hands and knees up to the locomotive over a dramatic/thoughtful guitar duo of anxious plunking and low wailing. After finding a suitable location between parked trains and some testing of the aerosol valves, the outlining begins in a deliberate and planned lay of lines and fills. The lyrics begin and within the first few lines the vocalist says “I have lost the will to live”.

Shortly thereafter a wall of scourging guitars builds and the camera shot gets shakey – and the shot quiets down again for some smooth linework and polka dots. Aside from the blurred faces and the jaunty, somewhat tentative movements of the painting crew, you would not have reason to think that this is done without permission. Is it? The video ends with a very long sequence of trains pulling into stations – crisp modern cars with colorful outcroppings of characters and letters, sometimes complete cars. The volume hikes upward, the Prodigy starts talking about smacking their bitch up, corks are popped and the furtive busting through fences increases as the unfettered aerosol continues.

Gary Stranger. The London Wall. Global Street Art

And we end this weeks collection with Gary Stranger from the MSK Crew doing this completely legal mural on something called The London Wall, a rotating art gallery that has works related to, you guessed it, London.

BSA Special Feature: Olek’s Crochet Group Performance in India

An original idea combining art and activism as performance in public space, again conceived of, directed, and performed by Olek. Her second trip to India, Olek intimately studies the sociological structures that enable some while restrict others and in a gentle and firmly inspirational manner begins a crochet revolution.

The physical practice of creating crochet taps deeply into historical roles based on gender and class, among others. It is art, craft, and work simultaneously. The artful placing of non-performer persons performing in a public space – a crochet flash mob, if you will – activates the environment powerfully. Add to this a symbolic denial of speech or sight by way of gag or blindfold and you have a silently shocking referendum on societal inequality, and a very personal appreciation for the path of the individual.

Among her many missions is to support Maitri to reduce gender based violence. “They are doing so much for those who need,” she tells us.

Narcelio Grud and a Mobile Restroom

A social scientist of a different stripe, Narcelio Grud constructs the project and places it in the public sphere to observe how you/we interact with it. Knowing what details are necessary to provoke a reaction is part of his genius and the product of insightful study. Encountering one of his installations, people are unwittingly, willingly, the performers. Welcome to the show.

Más by Mateo in Montreal

Covering a ruddy multi-planed surface like exposed brick by brush and roller is no quick and easy feat. Mateo shows us how to use brush, aerosol, and stencil to bring to this Montreal wall a reminder to sit quietly and calmly contemplate. Her eyes have been blindfolded with a sign that says Más; as in “No Más“, no more visual information flooding at you from different directions. Be calm.

“In a society of consumption where everything keeps going faster and we always desire more,” he says. “We shouldn’t fail to remind ourselves to slow down, and therefore take time to better ourselves as individuals.”

BSA Special Feature: Sofles / Wayfarer by Selina Miles

Selina Miles has just directed an epic excursion through the pleasant looking Collingwood and Fitroy areas of Melbourne and the graffiti culture there. The prolific and talented writer Sofles rides and runs center screen on this guided tour of his aerosol stomping ground and this (nearly) one continuous shot drone film is a revelation. Again Miles pushes the documentation category forward, going beyond merely recording toward capturing, creating a sense of drama, certainly poetry.

Omar Musa grabs you with his words before you even know where you are and holds your heart tethered to a string and pulling you along these streets and alleys and back lots. Many times this piece is soaring in its singularity and its sense of collaboration.

BSA Special Feature: Wall Writers: Graffiti in its Innocence

The depth of scholarship and research that Roger Gastman puts into graffiti history is only exceeded by his passion for the people and the culture that coalesced in the neighborhoods and streets of Philadelphia and New York in the genesis story of Wall Writers: Graffiti in its Innocence. He opens the doors to people who until now have been hidden and difficult to reach, and gives them an opportunity to tell the story of their lives then and how crucial the graffiti scene was to their experience of the city. He also examines the impact their work had on spurring the first of various art-in-the-streets scenes that evolved afterword.

Currently on tour for the 350 page tome and the documentary film, Gastman is bringing some of these original writers to cities to meet you, and possibly you may see the film’s narrator, Mr. John Waters.

Pixel Pancho: “Teseo e il Minotauro” in Rome

In a city steeped in art history where every camera shot looks like a classic movie scene you have to be cognizant of the critical analysis that will be directed at your new mural from every Giovanni, Adriana, and Luca who are walking by or hanging out of the window. These are the countrymen and women of Pixelpancho so he takes it all into consideration and presents a classic of his own, merged with a steam-punked futurism of robots who are rather romantic in their own way.

Pixel Pancho: “Teseo e il Minotauro” in Rome

Read The Label: Blood, Sweat and Years.

A full length film about graffiti and skateboarding from this moment – a collection of skate, graff, rap, beatz, cops, vandalism, illegal mark-making, and legal murals that tells a story as seen by people who do it. BSA Special Feature: Cane Morto: AMO -TE LISBOA  ⁄ AN IGNOMINIOUS STREET ART MOVIE.  The full movie.

Cane Morto is haunted by the vicious trash-talking spiritual guide who insults and implores them to recover their graffiti gonads by foregoing the limp-dicked mural route that all of their friends are following.

Not quite a manifesto nor a morality play, AMO-TE Lisboa follows the Italian collective on their Portugal quest to assuage their own consciences and retain street cred virility – all the time being licked by fiery tongues of contempt of those who would have them clearly identify themselves and their allegiances.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-Film-3-Cane-Morto-740-Screen-Shot-2016-02-18-at-10.38

We’re usually impressed by these guys’ bombastic and sarcastic tirades about the strictures of the Graffitti/Street Art/Urban Art/Contemporary Art dogmas – and their willful insistence on making their own path nevertheless.

This ranting, whining, bragging trio of road-trip roller romeos never let you down with their parodies of almost everything and everyone as they hit bold, ridiculous and cutty spots all around town and interact with people on the street – including many who weigh in to insult their work.

Wallflowers they are not.

Brooklyn-Street-Art-Film-2-Cane-Morto-740-Screen-Shot-2016-02-18-at-10.38

A full-length movie like this helps Cane Morto secure their own uncomfortable place in these ongoing debates of artists/writers by mocking them to their face and making crude and poetic paintings – while crying hot righteous angry tears, then begging for forgiveness.

Pure drama! Pure feeling! And a grande mestolo of comedy ragu.
