POP International Galleries is proud to present BREAKING AND ENTERING –

UR New York’s first exhibition in conjunction with Miami Art Basel 2011.

BREAKING AND ENTERING is a demonstration of UR New York’s
vast range and ability to continuously produce groundbreaking urban
inspired art. Artists Michael Baca – aka “2ESAE” and Fernando Romero aka
“SKI” are committed to “breaking and entering” into the mainstream – letting their art loose on the world, all the while breaking the status quo and entering the art world on their own terms — offering intensely personal and colorful works of art with an amazingly beautiful and compelling yet universal appeal.

UR New York
tells the stories of a new generation of artists…those talented urban
and street creators generally hidden in the shadows and more often than
not found arrested and punished for nothing more than expressing their
massive talents.

UR New York
has grown up on the streets of New York City — both artists born and
bred in some of New York’s most notoriously tough neighborhoods.
Continuing with their fascination with and the allure of the street,
Mike and Fernando started their own “gallery stand” on the corner Prince
and Greene Streets a few years ago in SoHo, New York’s original gallery
district. Since claiming the street corner, Ski and 2ESAE have now
moved onward and upward, having been received by the gallery world and
are now fully represented by Pop International Galleries on West
Broadway.

Breaking the cycle of struggling street artists and entering the
professional art world with shows and collaborations globally, with
companies such as Nike, VH1, and of course Pop International, these two
authentic, skillful and versatile artists have begun to make their name
known. BREAKING AND ENTERING
will be the first time they will present an entire solo collection
making them some of the first artists ever to sponsor their own show in
Miami around Art Basel in the Wynwood District.

UR New York
is the premier collective to watch. Propelled by sheer determination, a
hunger for success and growing validation by galleries, collectors and
their peers, Mike and Fernando have a somewhat guerilla approach to the
art world — a point of pride for the two of them, who remain genuinely
grateful and humble. This unconventional approach has already allowed
them some early benefits resulting from their burgeoning success. They
have traveled extensively and work determinedly with kids from all walks
of life, earning admiration and respect the world over. “BE WHO YOU ARE®”
is their credo and they take their growing visibility seriously,
genuinely recognizing their responsibilities as they have an impact on
the kids they encounter, while still maintaining a solid work ethic and
commitment to their community.

BREAKING AND ENTERING will have pieces inspired by traveling the world and the different people that have touched their lives. Ur New York

This week UR New York is rocking the four-panel spot across the street from Woodward Gallery in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.  The born-and-raised New York duo, who have both done graffiti in the past, have been working hard year-round on the streets of Soho selling their art for about 3 years . With their folding tables displaying original screened and sprayed urban image collage, they’ve built a serious fan base. With themselves as their own best reps, they’ve also landed their work in shows and private collections and even corporate lobbies. Always hustling and always challenging themselves to take it to the next level, they’re pretty stoked to fill this spot that has hosted a number of New York’s hometown favorite Street Artists over the last few years.

To mark the new installation, 2easae and Ski wanted to do something new and creative so they painted everything by hand instead of using screens and stencils. The results are somehow more personal and inviting. Stretching beyond their comfort level, they also took on something more abstract. When an artist does something courageous like going outside what is safe for them, you gotta applaud. According to the guys, the end result was a feeling that they were more connected to this piece than others they’ve worked on. They also scored a greater appreciation for artists who work by hand.

Brooklyn Street Art: Can you talk a little about the actual shapes and symbols you used and what pushed you toward them?
UR New York: We decided to use different symbols, and arrows in particular, to represent the different directions we may take in life. When you look at our work traditionally it’s detailed and defined with elements of graffiti. We started this project taking a completely different route. We figured we’d use simple imagery to convey an abstract feeling.

Brooklyn Street Art: Can each panel stand as a piece by itself or is it meant to be as a single piece only?
UR New York: The initial thought was for the four panels to create a narrative. Artistically each panel was structured to stand alone but when they come together you grasp the full vision of the piece.

Brooklyn Street Art: Talk a little bit about how you feel about changing it up stylistically.
UR New York: Changing our style of work is refreshing. As much as we love urban landscapes and graffiti, we decided to try something different and slightly out of our element. We get a thrill out of trying new techniques and styles. Our audience and supporters are always expecting something fresh and new. It’s exciting to deliver and get positive and creative feedback.

Brooklyn Street Art: Do you always bring graffiti to the game?
UR New York: Our style is as unique as a fingerprint but an element of graffiti will always play a role in our artwork. It’s part of our background and we pay homage to the roots and culture of where this all started for us.

UR New York in Miami : Shooting Hoops at Art Basel

Brooklyn Street Artists 2ESAE and SKI, the duo known as UR New York, have arrived in Miami after a long drive from NYC for their big opening at Billi Kid’s “Art of Basketball” show December 2.  They started the 20+ hour trip Monday night and BSA spoke to them as they reached Jacksonville, Florida, emerging from the dark swamps of Georgia. They were excited to be only a few hours from their destination and to talk about the video they just finished for the show.

“Basically, instead of doing a time-lapse process showing the backboard being created we figured we would give an inside look into the process of making it in our studio. There was a lot of thought that went into it, considering that this project really hit home to us,” says Mike Baca (AKA 2ESAE) as he describes the way the story unfolds.  In the video, both Baca and his art partner Fernando Romero (AKA SKI) lay down multiple layers of screens and paint to build their piece.

On the small screen below UR New York also play some hoops on a New York outdoor court – so emblematic of the buoyant and fleeting scene on the streets of Brooklyn in warmer months.  In fact, you can see the ball they used at the show. Maybe they’ll get a chance to use it in balmy Miami.

Coming Up Friday: Gore B. and “Stokenphobia” at Pandemic Gallery (NY)

The long awaited return of Gore B.

– don’t know why I say it that way but it seems that the streets had a few more historical references and sudden intricate storylines when Gore B. was around.  His new “drawing” show opening at Pandemic Gallery in South Williamsburg tomorrow features densely layered elements in black white and silver – all of his favorites: painted portraits from early photos, symbols from science, religious and maybe astronomy textbooks, ornate filigranic linework, and an ongoing fascination with type styles and letter faces.

But Gore B. will not be alone at Pandemic by any means on Friday – “Stokenphobia”, a show about two geometric shapes, will feature the work of around 40 street artists and friends in a show of community love for signage.

For the non-eggheads reading this – stokenphobia is fear of circles – so Pandemic has provided small rectangular shaped metal signs to a number of people to create a piece on.

Says Robbie D. of Pandemic, “It’s kind of sporadic. There was no real theme except ‘Just do whatever you feel on the objects we give you.’ We provided the metal signs and basically everybody is allowed to do what they want.  So there’s no real theme to the artwork – it’s just about the shapes.”

Speaking about the makeup of the group who was invited to participate in the show, Robbie D say, “Mainly they are street artists but there are a lot of friends and artists who don’t work on the street but work in a studio. So it’s really just acquaintances and other street art people we respect and have known for a while now – kind of a close group of people that we know.”

PANDEMIC GALLERY PRESENTS: “STOKENOHOBIA”

Please join us for the opening of our newest exhibition, “Stokenphobia”. Featuring drawings from Gore B and hand painted signs from over 30 artists. We will be having an opening reception Friday, March 12 from 7-11pm.

Gore B has long been an integral part in the street art scene coast to coast, from hand painted signs bolted around New York City, to crisp roller letters hidden around Santa Cruz.  His work, painted either on canvas or scrawled across the walls of bridge underpasses depicts characters of regional importance and cultural significance.

“Stokenphobia” or the fear of circles and round objects is a fear we have decided to confront head on by displaying the work of many urban artists hailing from New York, Philadelphia, and California on large round metal road signs. If  this  circular display becomes too overwhelming for those afflicted by the phobia they need only to turn around and will find over 60 small rectangular signs painted by the same motley crew of unconventional art misfits. Pandemic is giving those afflicted with Stokenphobia a  chance to confront this debilitating fear.

It’s Getting Hot Down There: ART BURN MIAMI

Eartburner-mpresario and street artist Celso has a sense of humor about most things, and street art in particular.

Without reading too much into it, it’s easy to understand how some of the hype surrounding the humongus Art Basel in Miami this week does tend to turn off the hot-headed anti-capitalist anti-consumerist anti-consumption anti-homogenization-of-everything-in-our culture-types in our midst.

Not that any of these artists are in that category, but it is pretty funny to learn that this one-day only art show ends with all the art being burned, and none of it added to your burgeoning street-art collection.

Destination Art Space, a gallery within an upscale boutique merging fashion and art, is excited to kick off an art/fashion exhibition, “EXTRATERRITORIALITY SATORUTANAKA”- in New York Fashion Week featuring Takuya Ishikawa and Destroy & Rebuild.” This special exhibition will be held during New York Fashion Week.

EXTRATERRITORIALITY SATORUTANAKA is a recently launched new line by SATORUTANAKA, which is one of the most influential emerging designers from Tokyo, starting to present their AW2009 collection in New York City.

Designer Satoru Tanaka draws design inspiration from military fashion, work wear, fifties style and R&B culture. He has mixed and reconstructed these elements to create, EXTRATERRITORIALITY SATORUTANAKA, an experiment linking Past, Present, and Future.

Photographer Takuya Ishikawa, who has worked around the world with many medias such as magazines, advertisements, music jackets, movies, etc., is now collaborating with Tanaka. Under the theme of bones & flowers, Ishikawa has photographed various bones of monkeys, lions, buffalos, pigs, etc, and then put them on SATORUTANAKA’s t-shirts. There will be 50 different variations of T-shirt designs for this project.

Destroy & Rebuild is a three-man artist collective whose art is a fusion of various media such as graffiti, photography, paints, silk-screen, collage, and more. Each member started doing graffiti on the streets and subways in New York City, illegally. After years of creating work in and around the city, they decided to form Destroy & Rebuild on the premise that members used to destroy the city with their graffiti and now are rebuilding it through urban/industrial art.

At the reception party, these three creators, EXTRATERRITORIALITY SATORUTANAKA, Takuya Ishikawa, and Destroy & Rebuild, will unveil their cultural creativities and form them into one peace of art.
