Independent Art Fair (Manhattan, NY) – Armory Week

The second edition of INDEPENDENT, the award winning temporary exhibition forum devised by and for gallerists will take place at the former DIA Center for the Arts and building at 548 W 22nd Street March 3-6, 2011 during New York Art Fair Week.

INDEPENDENT will take place on the second, third and fourth floors of the building and will be open to the public free of charge, Thursday from 4 to 9 PM, Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 8 PM, and Sunday from 12 to 4 PM. The layout of the exhibition is customized to reflect the spatial and curatorial concerns of each of over 40 international participants, who are presenting solo and group exhibitions as well as shared collaborative presentations.

INDEPENDENT strives to reexamine traditional art fair models and methods of presentation, in response to the changing attitudes and growing challenges for artists, galleries, non-profits, curators and collectors as the experience of viewing and interacting with contemporary art in a group context.

The international list of participating galleries and non-profits was developed through conversations and shared conceptual engagements as opposed to the application process that typically characterizes the contemporary art fair. In so doing, the participants enter into a consortium of shared ideas and vision for their approach to their contemporary art practice.

INDEPENDENT was conceived by Elizabeth Dee (Elizabeth Dee, New York and founder of X Initiative) and Darren Flook (Hotel, London). The 2011 edition of Independent was developed in conjunction with creative advisor Matthew Higgs (White Columns, New York) as well as co-directors Jayne Drost and Laura Mitterrand.

BSA Snow Day: “Took My Breath Away”

New Yorkers woke up today to find our city covered in snow again – this has been happening a lot, people. No schools, no buses and most certainly scarce taxis to get to places. By midday we are certain things will be back to normal but for the early risers it was a bit difficult to navigate the streets and get to work. Maybe it’s better to stay in bed. We took some images of what we saw in the morning to share with you. Enjoy them!

Images of the Week 01.23.11

Tonight it will be 7 degrees farenheit in Brooklyn, and the wind will blow down the East River to the Verrazano, around Coney Island and the Rockaways in a bashing fashion. New York City in January can be an inhospitable and unfriendly city, especially if you are a new arrival. “Where are all the people?” New Yorkers, all clad in blacks and grays pile out from the subway tunnels in droves and scurry fast down the sidewalk, like ants whose mound has been disturbed. The puffy fashions often mute gender, causing a great many otherwise fashionable or sexy dudes and dudettes to look like large tubers. Outside is a place to pass through as you stomp toward your dwelling without looking around or upward. Exhausted by layers of fabrics and zippers and buttons and laces and pulling on, over, and off – dropping bags and backpacks, the peeling off wet socks and salty boots are the final salvo before collapse. Depressed yet?

The flip side of this is that a lot of Street Artists are working in their kitchen/toolshed/studio right now and really putting a lot of effort into it – some are even stockpiling like squirrels for spring. If it is sunny for a minute in the afternoon, and you can peer over your scarf on the icy snow piled sidewalks of Brooklyn for a second you’ll see there is some new Street Art here and there. There is one reason to go outside and it’s encouraging to see that some street artists that call New York their home have been getting up despite the elements. It’s not really surprising to find that Street Artists are a scrappy lot; it kind of goes with the territory. Nonetheless it can bring a smile to your frozen face. Happy Winter.

A Survey of Works and Installation by Ellis Gallagher AKA Ellis G

Ellis Gallagher, AKA Ellis G, is the quintessential street artist, having created a highly unique and stylized interpretation of the City and its surroundings that New Yorkers take for granted. Through tracing of shadows with sidewalk chalk, his artwork is the very definition of temporary, marking a specific time and place that few are lucky enough to stumble upon. Mighty Tanaka is proud to bring you Permanently Temporary, A Survey of Works and Installation by Ellis Gallagher AKA Ellis G.

For the first time ever, original Ellis G shadow and chalk drawings will be made available to the public. The installation for Permanently Temporary will double as a performance piece during the opening reception on Friday, January 21^st, as he will create custom shadow and chalk artwork on site for the gallery visitors. This special event translates an otherwise temporary form of art into an obtainable milestone of artistic interpretation.

Ellis Gallagher has paid his dues time and time again on the streets of NYC and throughout the world, as he has created an iconic technique that is recognized globally.

BREAKING: Faile and Bäst in Action

Fresh Images of Two of Brooklyn’s Best Known Getting Up

BSA caught up with the Brooklyn Street Artists Bäst and the Faile Collective on a snowy, pretty and serene Saturday morning on the streets of the People’s Republic of Brooklyn. While the artists assiduously jockeyed with ladders and stencils and paint on the sidewalk, the late waking Williamsburg morning unfolded around them. Friends and family stopped by to say hello, surprised passersby snapped photos, and a rumpled dog walker stole a glance while yanked down the street by his master. The 16 foot high industrial doorway is still damp with a panoply of pop/pulp/consumer culture images and text integrating recent graphic images seen from Faile paired with witty references to their buddy and longtime collaborateur Bäst. One of their largest recent installations, the new blast of monochrome stencil posters are sprayed on rough rectangular patches of white, arranged salon style in this brand new gallery of the street.

WHOLETRAIN

Florian Gaag tells the story of a crew of four “writers” – David, Tino, Elyas und Achim – who observe the hierarchies, the values, the rules and the codes of the graffiti scene. Night after night they make off for the subway stations of the city, intent on leaving opulent images behind. But as another crew appears on the scene, and the four feel challenged, a creative battle ensues, one that will change the lives of these young people for ever.
We are confronted with life taken to the limit. Constantly on the edge of legality. Always on the run from the law. Urban space must be reclaimed. Friends are made and lost. Unbridled creativity and doing things for the sheer love of it are watchwords too.

New SWOON “Walki” Print

As she readies to return to Haiti (interview next week), Swoon is offering a new print to support The Konbit Shelter Project.

“The Walki print is an immediately touching portrait by Swoon of a boy named Walki who lives in the village of Bigones and spent time with the Konbit Shelter team at the community center building site this last summer. The print is made of a three-layer screenprint on handmade Indian jute paper measuring 13″ x 21″ and is limited at an edition of 300 – all proceeds from the sale will go towards support of the Konbit Shelter Project.

The Konbit Shelter Project was created with the idea that a group of artists, engineers, architects and builders could pool their individual knowledge, resources and time to make a lasting difference in post-earthquake Haiti”

BSA Technology and Art UPDATE: This weekend the new Tron movie comes out to thrill and chill techno geeks everywhere. Apparently they took 28 years off of Jeff Bridges with new developments in CGI. I’ve pre-ordered the personal CGI device coming out this spring by Apple – the iDigress personal age reducer should enable me to jump fences and run through empty lots with more agility. Speaking of Hi-Tech wizardry, take a look at the new LoopTaggr, which really cuts down on your stenciling time.
