A solo show by John Breiner

 Life, death and rebirth, the constant cycle of existence.  Yet, the turbulence of a shifting dynamic on the planet has caused a major disruption in the natural order of things.  In this modern age, the Earth’s climate is increasing, causing certain aspects of flora and fauna to gain a foothold on developed land and take advantage of recouping expanses of once settled areas within the great American landscape.  Through chaotic economic conditions and unforeseen disasters, devastating setbacks have allowed once expelled elements to creep back into the neglected expanses, reaping havoc on our forgotten structures.  This encroachment of the wild upon once settled habitat symbolizes mans weakening grip on world.  Mighty Tanaka is excited to bring you our next solo show, Sooner or Later…We All Make The Little Flowers Grow, featuring the thought provoking artwork of John Breiner.   His juxtaposing views of the planets continual reclamation exemplifies the significant impact of our actions within an ever changing terrain.

Sooner or Later…We All Make The Little Flowers Grow suggests that humans have become an invasive species as the population has been growing with rapid acceleration.  The natural world responds by enacting new systems to rapidly break down buildings and infrastucture.  John Breiner references this to symbolize the decomposition of society and the spread of positivity to overcome all obstacles.

John Breiner uses a mixed media approach to his work that includes elements of photo transfer, acrylic paint, spray paint and illustration upon found books and old sheets of paper.  Through his beautiful interpretations, the work comes to life, inviting the viewer to visit to take a step closer and unravel the contrasting enigma.

Opening Saturday October 27, 2012, with a body of new work, New Image Art is pleased to present “Catharsis,” a new solo exhibition by Mexico City artist SANER, Curated by Medvin Sobio of 33third Los Angeles/Mid-City Arts.

Catharsis in the Poetics of Aristotle is defined as an emotional, corporal, mental & spiritual purification.  Through the experience of compassion and fear, the spectators of the tragedy experience a purgation of emotion, a purification of the soul, a reconfiguration of desires and passions; a new revolutionary formation of desire.
Catharsis represents the final act in a cycle of solo exhibitions Saner has been developing, where each one has looked to generate an emotional change over the spectator, guiding the viewer towards a path of rebirth, freedom & purification.
In this, the final act, the viewer is the element that gives life to the exhibition.  Catharsis will be a space that will remain wrapped in a psycho magical act of healing.  With an installation, performance piece, paintings, & works on paper; this collective act of creation, of encounter & confrontation is what will generate the liberation of the spectator.ABOUT SANER

Edgar “Saner” Flores is an urban artist, muralist, professor, illustrator & graphic designer.  Raised by his parents in Mexico City and surrounded by rich color and tradition, Saner developed an interest in drawing and Mexican Muralism early on.  “I visited Oaxaca a lot when I was growing up because my mother is from there, and certain traditions which they carried out there really caught my attention.”  He began expressing himself on paper and through graffiti art, later going on to earn a degree in graphic design from the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico.
His lively & humorous images of masked characters on public walls, found objects and other canvases are influenced by Mexican custom and folklore, color, mysticism, masks, and skulls.  A mix of these lifelong interests and passions has led him to become the artist he is today.  “The masks that I use are traditional masks from Mexico.”  The jaguars, coyotes, skulls, and other recurrent characters appear in my work because that parallel world is the real self, the real face. “
Saner’s work has been featured in galleries in Mexico, the United States, London, Berlin and Barcelona.  Recent projects & exhibitions include “Kidnap Express,” Mid-City Arts Los Angeles, “Nose Job,” Eric Firestone Gallery East Hamptons NY, “The Bone yard Project,” Tucson Arizona, “The Bone yard: Return Trip,” Pima Space & Air Museum, “The Wynwood Walls,” Miami/Art Basel.  He has collaborated with Kidrobot, Vans, G-Shock, HQTR Canada, Pineda Covalin, Persigna Store, Bacardi, Adidas Mexico, Televisa, and many others.

Marsea Goldberg, founder and director of New Image Art in Los Angeles, started the gallery in 1994 at her 10×10 design studio. Since then, the gallery has grown to attract a global cult following, grabbing the interest of art lovers and collectors worldwide. Renowned for it’s discriminating eye and solid curatorial skills, New Image Art Gallery continues to show the works of established and emerging artists coming out of the street, skate, fine art, and surf scenes. One half of the visual arts collective, Viejas Del Mercado, Medvin Sobio has Curated, produced, and consulted on various large scale mural & public art projects.  He currently serves as Art Director at Mid-City Arts Gallery & 33third Los Angeles, the largest street art supply retailer in the United States.  In 2011, he was selected as Co-Curator of Wynwood Walls, the outdoor street art museum founded by Tony Goldman & Jeffrey Deitch.  Was Co-Producer & Co-Curator for The Boneyard Project & brought on as a Consulting Producer on the HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD Docuseries which explores the power of public art.  A significant component of his advocacy is dedicated to multi-dimensional cultural awareness via art exhibitions and events.  He strives to encourage awareness of the culture that the artists have emerged from and their relevance to various stratums of American culture.

Monsieur A is known by his distinctive figures –  long lined characters with disturbing yet charismatic smiles. This Atelier de Production et de Création, develops precise execution in his deceptively naive contours or childish lines that depict more than we see.
Andre’s recognizable geography, cursive and dynamic hand style transforms his life into an oeuvre that carries his aesthetic values and fuses with his own stylistic criteria in a perfect constellation of art and fashion. Within the variable contexts, André oversize’s graffiti production to personalize spaces while constructing landscapes of identity and recognition. André could be described in Baudillard’s words “ingenious publicity in which each person becomes the impresario of his own existence”.
André Saraiva, has expanded the definition of art as itself, while re-defining “what an artist can do” – his new extended worlds manifest in production, process and exhibition. With this playful manifestation, André will take over the newly renovated project space of Anonymous Gallery, Mexico City. The space will surround the artist with his works on paper while this cross-cultural phenomena paints live in front of a viewing audience on the night of
October 11th.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
 
André Saraiva, also known as Monsieur André or Monsieur A, is a French graffiti artist. Born as son of Portuguese parents in Uppsala, Sweden, he has been living in Paris since his childhood. Saraiva started doing graffiti in 1985, quickly acquiring notoriety in the late 90s with Mr. A, a cartoonish character with a top hat, big smile, long legs, and a cross and circle for his eyes that could be found all over the streets of Paris. A famous member of the early Parisian graffiti scene alongside Invader and Zevs, he also made an appearance in Banksy’s street art movie ‘Exit through the Giftshop’. Thanks to his distinctive poetic and joyful style and his use of pink colour, he became instantly recognizable – for example in his Love Graffiti series, which he created in the year 2000 – and expanded into various techniques such as wall paintings and sculpture from there. Even installations now count to his repertoire as seen in ‘Art in the Streets’, recently on display at the MOCA in Los Angeles that was curated by Jeffrey Deitch and Aaron Rose.

StolenSpace Gallery are delighted to announce a solo exhibition of work by Shepard Fairey opening on 19th October 2012. This will be Fairey’s second major London exhibition, following his collaboration with the Gallery in 2007. It will feature a range of new works including mixed media paintings on canvas, works on paper, retired stencils collages, rubylith cuts, and as well as serigraphs on wood, metal and paper

Entitled Sound and Vision, the exhibition title is taken from the David Bowie song of the same name. Bowie has been a major influence on Fairey, because he was able to master music and visual presentation with equal virtuosity. Music is an artistic medium that Fairey reveres almost more than he does visual art. He comments: “Music is visceral, but also has the additional powerful layers of the lyrics, with their content and politics, and the style, politics, and personalities of the musicians themselves. No matter how much I love art, or try to convince myself of its relevance in society, the fact remains that music is much more able to reach people’s hearts and minds.” The artist hopes to be able to induce in people, even a fraction of the emotion that hearing a new song or listening to a familiar one can evoke.

Sound and Vision, will incorporate a diverse array of mixed media works, which embody both the political and social influences on Fairey’s work, particularly that which is directly inspired by music. It is not only David Bowie, but also the Sex Pistols, Roxy Music, Gang of Four, the Clash and Metallica which have had an impact on Fairey’s work. To encourage viewers to experience an interaction between music and art, the artist will provide records from his own collection as well as customised vintage turntables to enable viewer listening. This section of the show is complemented by a display of eighty works which have the same 12×12” dimension as an LP sleeve. The artist will therefore use both sound and vision to connect with his audience.

Over the last five years the artist has seen a meteoric rise with a series of international projects and exhibitions. In 2008 his portrait of the then Democratic candidate, Barack Obama, with the message of ‘HOPE’ under the illustration, became an internationally recognised emblem of the campaign and a symbol political change for many. Since last exhibiting in London, Fairey has continued to progress with his art and with a/ 20 Year Retrospective museum exhibition that began at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston in 2009 and continued to the Warhol Museum and Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati. Last year, he was commissioned by TIME Magazine to design a cover in celebration of ‘The Protester’, an anonymous figure representative of momentous world demonstrations such as the Arab Spring and Occupy movement.

Lazarides artists and special guests inspired by London’s infamous asylum will transform the five tunnels with their own creative pandemonium.

The exhibition will run from the 9th to the 21st October and feature work by the following artists: Antony Micallef, Artists Anonymous, ATMA, Conor Harrington, Dan Witz, Doug Foster, Ian Francis, Karim Zeriahen, Kelsey Brookes, Klaus Weiskopf, Lucy McLauchlan, Michael Najjar, Nachev, Tessa Farmer, Tina Tsang, Tobias Klein, War Boutique and 3D.

Following the astounding success of Hell’s Half Acre in 2010 and Minotaur in 2011, Lazarides Gallery and The Old Vic Tunnels are joining artistic forces for the third and final time coinciding with this coming Frieze Art Fair, running from 9 – 21 October.

This exhibition goes against the grain of society to bring you ‘Bedlam’ a term coined from ‘Bethlam’ London’s Hospital for the mad.  The infamous mental institute is the oldest in the country of which came to epitomise the brutality long associated with lunatic asylums all over the country dating back to 1247.

The meeting of minds between Lazarides Gallery within London’s foremost artistic platform The Old Vic Tunnels will creatively explore the well-intended beginnings of this legendary institution, to its final disgrace and reform. It will certainly leave you questioning your ‘compos mentis’ an experience that will showcase the line between genius and madness has never been so thin.

 ‘Most people that work in theatre are MAD, everyone involved in the art world is crazy, Steve Lazarides is probably the craziest of them all, which is why Bedlam,  the historic mental asylum, is the perfect backdrop for an art show, a stones throw from the original site. Built around the same time as the Old Vic Theatre it drew almost as many crowds; for a penny one could peer into their cells, view the freaks of the “show of Bethlehem” and laugh at their antics. The Kosmopolite Art Tour will host the international Graffiti event “JustWritingMyName” providing extra wall space for invited artists from Amsterdam and Den Haag.
The Kosmopolite Art Tour was originally initiated by three contemporary art collectives: Mac Crew (Paris/Bagnolet), Farm Prod (Brussels) and Aerosol Bridge Club (Amsterdam) in order to promote the development of pictorial art through the model of international artistic meetings and exchanges.

The project has started in three European cities in 2009 – Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris – with the objective to present an eclectic overview of contemporary pictorial art through mural creations and exhibitions. The project expanded internationally in 2011 involving the cities of Johannesburg, Jakarta, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Now the KAT will return to Amsterdam for the second time!

Low Brow Artique presents their first solo exhibition, The Penis Mightier Than the Sword, featuring the work of Dickchicken. Returning from nearly a three-year hiatus for one last show, The Penis Mightier Than the Sword will represent a spectrum of the artist’s work, including a combination of new and previously unseen images. This body of work will be on display to the public from October 12th – November 3rd with an opening to the public October 12th from 7-10pm.

In his own words, Dickchicken says, “this thing started as a joke. I was attempting to have fun. So I continued doing it until it was no longer fun[ny]. The graffiti community in NYC is full of high school style drama. When that crept into this idea it ruined it. So I made the call to cut it off. Now and again certain opportunities arise. If I think they are worth the time and effort I participate. This is one of those. So here we are, many years later and many experiences have come and gone. This idea persists. You don’t have to like it. You don’t have to hate it. Use whatever energy you have and create something better. “

At the height of this fame, Dickchicken created a series of faux-magazine covers as large panel pieces. Since imaging his Vanity Fair debut, these pieces have been placed into storage. In addition to these previously unseen images Dickchicken will unveil a series of self-portraits with religious figures including the Virgin Mary and L. Ron Hubbard. By inserting himself into Renaissance style religious portraits and glossy covers, Dickchicken’s comprehensive body of work inserts his tongue-in-cheek humor into the historical canon of art history.

21st century iconoclasts Trustocorp make their debut outside of the USA at The Outsiders Newcastle gallery this autumn. International Bank of Trustocorp is a landmark interactive show will appeal to anyone interested in contemporary art and future politics.

A paradigm shift in protest art, Trustocorp use a visual language more commonly associated with mainstream media and big business to pursue an insurrectionary agenda. The collective has placed fake products in supermarkets, installed ersatz magazine covers on newsstands and placed subversive street signs across America.

Trustocorp eschew the hackneyed politics of the established left in favour of ‘post post-modern’ politics that preach self-reliance, self-worth. Their maniefesto especially rejects our fearful, material and hedonistic contemporary society perpetuated by a nanny state and alarmist media.

For ‘International Bank of Trustocorp’ the accomplished apostates will employ their high production values to transform the gallery into a counterfeit counting house that examines the power of currency.

“We’re exploring the power of money in our lives on a local and international level,” a Trustocorp spokesperson explains. “From the high power gambling of Wall Street to the broken dreams of ‘Main Street USA,’ money is simultaneously the root of all evil and the solution to all problems. This show is our take on the global effect of greed and the need for money.”

Living in a Glass House, the latest free public art initiative of aMBUSH Gallery, shows that a better policy is that no one should throw stones, regardless of their accommodation, and simply look under them instead. You never know what you might find.
Presented by Sydney’s GLASSHOUSE and aMBUSH Gallery, Living in a Glass House comprises the work of fifty contemporary street, graffiti and urban artists from almost all the major cities in Australia. Located across the three levels of the GLASSHOUSE, the pop-up exhibition brings the most prominent figures in Australian art together in an ambitious and dynamic display of home-grown talent.
Produced and curated by aMBUSH Gallery, Living in a Glass House will exhibit new and original works by Brisbane artists Benjamin Reeve and Gimiks Born; Adnate, Itch, Lucy Lucy and Slicer, four of Melbourne’s indomitable AWOL crew; Gary Seaman from Adelaide; and Sydney’s own Brett Chan, Jodee Knowles, Deb, Bei Bad Girl, Bridge Stehli, Jumbo, Ben Brown and Ears, plus 36 more artists, hailing from across the nation.

From huge projections across historic buildings and the Manhattan Bridge to interactive performances in Brooklyn Bridge Park to whimsical art floating on the East River, the 16th Annual Dumbo Arts Festival will offer a free feast for the senses from September 28-30, 2012, organizers announced today.
This year’s schedule, which was unveiled by organizers today, cements the Dumbo Arts Festival as one of the city’s largest and most ambitious arts events. Over three days, an expected 225,000 art-lovers will experience extraordinary art by more than 500 artists from around the world.
Set amid the backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline in one of the city’s most tech-friendly and culturally rich hubs, the Festival will showcase installations in stores, lobbies, scaffolding, and alleyways, performances and exhibits on more than 50 stages, and tours of 100 open artist studios.
“The 16th Annual Dumbo Arts Festival will bring the entire neighborhood to life, transforming its streets, parks, bridges, buildings, waterfront, and even sky into canvasses, stages, exhibition spaces,” said Lisa Kim, Festival Director. “Best of all, it is completely free, enabling everyone to experience extraordinary local, national, and international art at a price that can’t be beat.”

Saturday, September 29th – 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

All outdoor projections are open from 6 p.m. to midnight all three nights.
