Guerrilla Garden
This November Black Book Gallery will host an exhibition featuring a handful of Denver artists who all congregate in an influential and very active collaborative space, Guerilla Garden.
Jolt is the mastermind behind Guerilla Garden and his newest project can be found at 10th and Osage, a 5,000 square-foot architecturally integrated fine art mural. Quentin Rice stands with the elite in the graffiti art world and has recently taken his mad painting skills to the canvas. JJ Rivera is a modern day renaissance man with a background in design and fabrication and works with a variety of clientele, including the Children’s Museum. Diego Rodriguez is a talented young print maker with a background in drawing and is currently pursuing his MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. Barth Quenzer is a fine art painter and teaches Visual Art in Denver Public Schools and Art Education at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. All of these artists have very unique styles and creative methods that blend to form a cohesive yet eclectic visual experience. D*Face
Metro Gallery is excited to present D*Face’s first solo exhibition with the Gallery. The London street artist, known for his fluorescent prints, dark portraits, and interpretations of popular culture, has presented numerous sell-out exhibitions around the globe. D*Face’s 2011 exhibition at Metro Gallery will bring the artist’s bright, bold and comical style to Melbourne. While the artist is most commonly recognised for his collaboration with pop singer Christina Aguilera on her ‘Bionic’ album cover, amongst street art-enthusiasts, D*Face represents the avant-garde of street art, pushing boundaries in and outside of the gallery.

Lady Pink – Evolution

Lady Pink is the first woman in graffiti based art. In her current solo exhibition “Evolution,” Lady Pink re-masters work she once created as public murals. Lady Pink muses on old lettering outlines which have evolved from three decades of writing. To the cultured eye, Lady Pink’s street tag can be identified from the period in which it was deliberately constructed. The colorful POP- surreal canvases today, have her trademark name interwoven throughout the elaborate image, as if to authenticate her mark in art history. Lady Pink’s unique personal vision has been communicated throughout her evolution from subway writer to fine artist.
Sandra Fabara, aka, Lady Pink, was born in Ecuador in 1964, raised in Queens, New York, and studied at the High School of Art & Design in Manhattan. While a student there, she met a group of graffiti artists and began writing at age fifteen. She was soon well known as the only prominent female capable of competing with the boys in the graffiti subculture. Lady Pink painted subway trains from the years 1979-1985. She appeared in theaters in the starring role of Rose in Charlie Ahearn’s 1983 film Wild Style and quickly acquired hip-hop, cult figure status. That same year, Lady Pink was featured in the landmark Graffiti exhibition at the West 57th Street Sidney Janis Gallery where she met the elite collectors of the artworld.

Lady Pink’s canvases are in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, New York and the Groningen Museum, Holland. They were featured in the major exhibitions “Art in the Streets” at the LA MOCA and “Graffiti” at the Brooklyn Museum. Lady Pink continues to mature as an artist, selling work internationally and producing ambitious murals commissioned for universities, corporations and institutions. This year, Pink’s art has also been seen on television commercials for the search engine BING.

Teebs
The juxtaposition of gentleness in the images and the technicolor aesthetic lends itself to the subtle execution that Teebs uses to immediately define a mood within his work. Much like his music, the tone in his artwork is one of intoxicating amusement. It’s whimsical, gentle and joyful on the surface but upon examination unveils some of the more intricate and abrasive elements. ‘Lady Luck’ will feature many large-scale works on wood, hand-painted installation elements and a handful of original artwork created on blank record sleeves. Through this body of work Teebs has found himself, once again, speaking and working within a language he truly understands.

BREAKING AND ENTERING is a demonstration of UR New York’s
vast range and ability to continuously produce groundbreaking urban
inspired art. Artists Michael Baca – aka “2ESAE” and Fernando Romero aka
“SKI” are committed to “breaking and entering” into the mainstream – letting their art loose on the world, all the while breaking the status quo and entering the art world on their own terms — offering intensely personal and colorful works of art with an amazingly beautiful and compelling yet universal appeal.

tells the stories of a new generation of artists…those talented urban
and street creators generally hidden in the shadows and more often than
not found arrested and punished for nothing more than expressing their
massive talents.
UR New York
has grown up on the streets of New York City — both artists born and
bred in some of New York’s most notoriously tough neighborhoods.
Continuing with their fascination with and the allure of the street,
Mike and Fernando started their own “gallery stand” on the corner Prince
and Greene Streets a few years ago in SoHo, New York’s original gallery
district. Since claiming the street corner, Ski and 2ESAE have now
moved onward and upward, having been received by the gallery world and
are now fully represented by Pop International Galleries on West
Broadway.
Breaking the cycle of struggling street artists and entering the
professional art world with shows and collaborations globally, with
companies such as Nike, VH1, and of course Pop International, these two
authentic, skillful and versatile artists have begun to make their name
known. BREAKING AND ENTERING
will be the first time they will present an entire solo collection
making them some of the first artists ever to sponsor their own show in
Miami around Art Basel in the Wynwood District.
UR New York
is the premier collective to watch. Propelled by sheer determination, a
hunger for success and growing validation by galleries, collectors and
their peers, Mike and Fernando have a somewhat guerilla approach to the
art world — a point of pride for the two of them, who remain genuinely
grateful and humble. This unconventional approach has already allowed
them some early benefits resulting from their burgeoning success. They
have traveled extensively and work determinedly with kids from all walks
of life, earning admiration and respect the world over. “BE WHO YOU ARE®”
is their credo and they take their growing visibility seriously,
genuinely recognizing their responsibilities as they have an impact on
the kids they encounter, while still maintaining a solid work ethic and
commitment to their community.

The Barracuda Wall in Los Angeles is a safe outlet for Street Artists and graffiti artists to try out ideas without worrying that they have to look over their shoulder. The boxing club inside is owned by Miguel De La Barracuda, thus it’s name and it’s a good spot to get seen, if only for minute before it’s replaced.
Paul Insect (photo © Carlos Gonzalez)What this fight club gives the lie to is that Street and graff artists are somehow at odds with one another, a mythology propagated by young hot heads sometimes. In fact, this high profile wall in LA shows that most peeps are big enough to allow everybody to get a chance to express the creative spirit, and often they collaborate. A quick bit of Googling will show you a diverse list of work on the Barracuda wall over the last couple of years, including people like Ron English, Gabe and OG. Defer, Prime, Gabe88, Anthony Lister, Escif, Sanir, Gregory Siff, Shepard Fairey and AWR MSK, Hush, Chad Muska, Cyrcle, Free Humanity, and David Flores. It’s a never ending reinvention for the never ending traffic on Melrose Avenue, a gift from a business owner to his community and the artists.
Photographer and BSA collaborator Carlos Gonzalez captured some excellent night shots of Street Artist Paul Insect at work on the wall one night last week. Masking out the portions of the wall for painting with a roll of masking tape, alternating sharp lines with drippy, Insect put up a pair of eyes to keep track of a piece by Risk below.

Brooklynite Gallery is proud to present, “Thinkers of This”, an exhibition from two well-traveled, street artists, STINKFISH and OTHER.
Drawing inspiration from all things that make a city tick, Colombian artist STINKFISH turns faces of unsuspecting people into vibrant portraits full of energetic emotion.
With work created on reclaimed surfaces such as vintage record covers, magazines and metal shelving, STINKFISH’s work cleverly mixes beauty and grit. Using a color palate that captures the flavor of the South American streets, this artist’s imagery does often originate from his own camera lens, but with all the time spent hitting the pavement, it’s no surprise discarded snap-shots are used at times to tell a story.
Striking women, proud men or gaze-filled children are often the subjects before STINKFISH adds his signature touch —an intricate tribal pattern to their features. Whether it be using stencil techniques or hand-drawing these patterns, Colombia’s premiere street artist’s images evoke a sense of cultural pride all while mixing in his post-youthful discontent and love of punk music.
Canadian artist OTHER has been kicking around this scene long before the term ‘street artist’ was one. Beginning with his freight train paintings that often consist of chalk white, weathered-faced vagabonds, floating on top of colorfully patterned, twisting-limb figures, OTHER has always made it a point to immerse himself in the very same culture he depicts.
Symbolic shapes, utensils, and typography in and around figures are the “sign language” he uses to communicate thoughts, ideas and dreams aloud. Curiosity often takes OTHER down the most windy roads, in the most remote places to seek out locations to work outdoors. These journeys often later feed into the back story of his paintings. Sometimes old signage, numbers, text bits and tags from other artists who’ve left their mark can become unplanned collaborations of sorts. Traveling and painting in places like northern Serbia, Chile and Romania with stories that seems to rival those of Hunter S. Thompson, no city or town is too far off the beaten path for this nomad artist.

White Walls is pleased to present Circulatory System, the new collection of work by Los Angeles-based artist Augustine Kofie. This will be Kofie’s second solo show with White Walls, and will include 30 recent works including smaller collage case studies on paper, hand painted multiple screen prints, assemblage on wood, paintings on canvas and wood and a large wall installation. The opening reception will be Saturday, November 12th, from 7-11 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through December 3rd.
The works comprising Circulatory System feature a clean delineation of geometric forms and divisions of space with a technical precision that resembles architectural drafting. Kofie’s understanding of illustration and linework results in a style of meticulous rendering that never seems cold or sterile due to the delicate sense of balance maintained within each composition. The muted palette softens the sharp lines, and imparts a simple elegance to the complicated arrangements of shape.
The vintage-toned color scheme- the pale seafoam and mint greens of the sixties and the varying beige shades of worn paper- fit perfectly with the collage aspect of the work. Found imagery and ephemera are interwoven into many of the paintings, constructing a new way of looking upon fragments of the past.
Kofie uses a similar approach of artful combination, rearrangement and layering to create a soundtrack that will accompany the exhibition, reflecting the theme as well as setting the tone for the collection. The 40 minute soundtrack is not an itunes mix but what Kofie calls a true mix, meaning a well- collaged assemblage of original beats, pulled dialogue from various films and re-edited songs.

Venice Beach, CA (October 2011) – Post No Bills proudly announces Paul Insect’s first major US solo exhibition. The show will feature an ambitious breadth of original works on paper, from one of street arts seminal figures.
TRIPTEASE REVUE will feature unique originals, exclusive limited edition prints and hand-finished works in Insect’s visceral style, mixing bright colors and arresting imagery – blending sex, politics, death and pop culture themes with a satirical edge.
The show will introduce a new body of work featuring masked voyeurs, explicit thematic paintings, plus signature babyheads, and a wide array of other sensory surprises. TRIPTEASE REVUE represents a new stage in the evolution of Insect’s art.
Paul started the renowned design collective “Insect” in 1995. He quickly found himself outgrowing the design industry and began placing his work on the streets. 2003 saw his first show “The Hills Have Eyes”, and in 2007, Paul exhibited at the famed Pictures On Walls (POW) Christmas show “Santa’s Ghetto” in Bethlehem, which saw him paint alongside Banksy and other POW artists on the separation wall in Palestine. Insect also gained notoriety for creating definitive album artwork for San Francisco hip-hop producer DJ Shadow.
“Bullion”, Paul’s first major solo show in 2007 at the Lazarides Gallery, saw him inconspicuously place real gold bars with bite marks on the streets of London. Before the show opened, Damien Hirst reportedly spent £500,000 buying up the entire show. His breakout follow-up show, “Poison” with Lazarides in 2008, took place in an abandoned sex shop in London’s Kings Cross and featured his iconic bronze Playboy Bunny skulls and his beloved babyheads – which have become some of the most recognisable images on the streets today.
