Eine Gruppenschau mit 9 Künstlern aus dem Umfeld der Street-Art Urban-Art, die Schablonen als ihr Stilmittel gewählt haben. Sie sind aus halb Europa, was heisst diese Ausstellung ist eine gute Gelegenheit für Leute die speziell interessiert sind an dieser Art von Graffiti Kultur, um sich einen Überblick zu verschaffen was da so abgeht.
Christian Guemy kuratiert.

Alle der Insgesamt neun Künstler aus dem Umfeld der Street Art, Urban Art und Graffiti Kultur, werden ihre Werke erstmals in der Schweiz zeigen.
Epsylon Point (FR), C215 (FR), Eime (PT), Btoy (ES), Orticanoodles (IT), Kris Trappeniers (BE), Leckomio (DE) und Snik (UK), sind sogenannte Stencil Artists und gehören
mit zu den bekanntesten in Europa. Sie nutzen überwiegend den öffentlichen Raum als ihr Medium und Schablonen als ihr Werkzeug.

Einer der berühmtesten unter ihnen ist sicherlich Christian Guemy aus Paris, auch bekannt unter seinem Künstlernamen C215.
Sein farbenfroher Stil, sein Talent, Mut, und seine unglaubliche Schaffenskraft sind ein wichtiger Teil der Stencil-Art Bewegung, die immer mehr Fans rund um den Globus findet.
Er hat schon an zahlreichen Ausstellungen teilgenommen, wird in zahllosen Publikationen erwähnt und kürzlich ein eigenes Buch “Community Service” veröffentlicht. Seine Werke findet man von Oslo über London, Paris, Moscow, Rom, Barcelona, Berlin und in vielen anderen Städten, über ganz Europa verstreut, bis hin nach Casablanca, Brooklyn, Sao Paolo und Neu-Dehli.

Erstmals in der Schweiz widmet sich eine Ausstellung exklusiv der Stencil-Art, dieser eigenständigen Richtung innerhalb der Graffiti Kultur.

BLADE The King of GraffitiStarkart Exhibitions of Zurich in partnership with ArTicks Gallery of Amsterdam are proud to present a solo show by legendary graffiti artist Steven BLADE Ogburn, who will be making a rare personal appearance at the opening.

Starkart Exhibitions opened tree years ago, putting the emphasis on exploring and developing new concepts, for presenting, perceiving and curating art. This evolved into a cutting-edge urban art space, showing various styles of contemporary art, laying the focus on: graffiti, street-art, and urban interventions. Since then, various projects, resulted in a series of highly successful exhibitions with local and and international artists. Focusing on providing a supportive environment for the arts and their role in the community, Starkart Exhibitions draws an increasingly large and diverse crowd.

Owner Roman Lew who is into Graffiti since more than 20 years himself, is personally curating the upcoming BLADE show, which will feature a selection of his oldschool full train canvases as well as more recent abstract works in a style which the man now known as The King Of Graffiti has referred to as abstragraff. Using the name BLADE, Steven began writing graffiti in the early 1970s, during the infancy of what would grow to be a worldwide art movement. Prior to 1972 he mainly produced ‘single hits’ on walls and the inside of trains. These simple tags evolved into more elaborate early pieces, but it was when he began painting the outsides of trains that BLADE found his medium. Over 5000 trains bore his name between 1972 and 1984, earning him the title ‘King of Trains’ among his friends and contemporaries.

Running concurrently with the BLADE solo show is a group show, ‘Stencil Bastards‘, featuring nine international stencil artists and curated by Christian Guemy

Henry Moore is credited with saying, “There’s no retirement for an artist; it’s your way of living, so there’s no end to it.” Moore’s words outline art making not simply as profession, but as compulsion. Make Ends Meet is an exhibition that celebrates the repetition of a daily grind, as it features the incredibly inventive, yet remarkably labor-intensive works of Jonathan Brilliant, Mathew Curran, and Olek. Only compulsion could inspire these artists to employ the countless connections, cuts, and knots necessary to create their works.

Jonathan Brilliant’s oeuvre appropriates the throwaway accessories of the coffee shop – the wooden stirrers, the cardboard sleeves, and the plastic lids – to create tension-woven installations and an assortment of prints inspired by those installations. His large-scale forms, utilizing thousands of these often overlooked items, thread, engulf, and cocoon space. His concentration on such materials speaks not only to his personal attachment to the coffee shop; as he writes, “In my vision [of the installations as the “Goldsworthy of the coffee shop project”], the coffee shop is my natural environment and source of inspiration for materials.” It also demonstrates Ray Oldenburg’s urban sociology theory that locations like coffee shops are the “third place” in an active community, following the spheres of work and home. Brilliant’s installations give abstracted form to this third place. Because coffee shops are communal locations for sustenance and socialization, their contents are immediately recognizable to a wide audience. However, in his methodical, excruciatingly exacting constructions, Brilliant combines these items in such a fashion that he negates their seeming familiarity and insignificance. Their resulting beauty instead appears sublimely foreign.

Mathew Curran has spent years exploring the potential in stencil art. An art form that offers technical possibilities of traditional printmaking and also represents a form of urban art, each stencil requires hours of cutting with an unforgiving X-acto blade. His current stencil work negotiates the intersections of natural and urban life. For him, nature is “a background character in every one of our interactions,” regardless of one’s location in the world. To communicate this duality, he has started turning to representations of white-tailed deer and ravens. While the choice of animals as his subject matter may seem to suggest an essential, potentially simpler, state of being, he uses jagged strokes to remind the viewer that the frenzy of urban life is echoed in the chaos of nature. Ravens have a long-standing connotation of death, and he utilizes studies of hunted, dead deer in his compositions. For him, these animals are metaphorical stand-ins for the complexities of survival across habitats and species. In this exhibition, he evolved from his traditional black-and-white palette, and he introduces the color of North Carolina red clay in his works to make specific reference to one of the current background characters of his home and environment.

Olek has spent the past decade in America “aggressively re-weaving the world as she sees fit.” She describes her own compulsion best when she writes, “A loop after loop. Hour after hour my madness becomes crochet.” Whether she uses wool or balloons, few things are safe from her intervention, be it covering the Wall Street Bull or entrapping a shopping cart in crochet. Olek is an artist for whom the entire world is her inspiration and installation. Past pieces include reclaiming entire rooms with crochet, filling a gallery with balloon sculptures, and creating full body suits before sending their wearers into the streets. Drawing from anything between intangible text messages and found everyday objects, she absorbs all into her process and allows them to reemerge covered in her multi-looped, hyper-colored, crocheted visions.

Hendershot Gallery New Street Art Print Show

Prints are often a good way for an artist to reach younger collectors and those with limited funds, and a good way for a gallery to get the doors open for traffic with a new generation of collectors. Hendershot Gallery new show in the Bowery opened last night with a Street Art centric collection of (mostly) prints that hit a nice cross-section of some of the current action on the streets. In addition they invited Gilf!, Clown Soldier, Chris Stain, and ASVP to hit some walls in the basement stenciling, screen printing or wheat pasting directly on the surface, so see if they’ll lend you the key to the dungeon while your are there.

Artists also included in the show are: Anthony Lister, Gaia, Gilf!, Icy & Sot, Imminent Disaster, Judith Supine, Know Hope, Labrona, Other and Paul Insect.

SILENT ART AUCTION & FUNDRAISER
We are pleased to announce Young New York: A Silent Art Auction & Fundraiser, Tuesday May 29, 2012 at White Box in the Lower East Side.  This one night event will benefit Young New York (YNY), an art focused social justice program working with 16 and 17 year olds who, legally classified as adults, have been thrown into New York State’s adult criminal justice system.
The funds from the silent auction will help build the first stage of the program – a series of cutting edge creative workshops with fifteen young New Yorkers. The young New Yorkers will work closely with a team of successful artists, designers, teachers and social workers to responsibly and creatively develop their message around their own experiences with, and hopes for, the treatment of youth in New York State’s criminal justice system.
The evening will feature the works of Steven Holl and Steve Powers ESPO along with many other established and emerging international artists whose work touches on the realm of the social in urban space, thereby creating a dialogue with the work being developed in the YNY workshops.
The space for the event has been provided by White Box, food provided by Maimonide of Brooklyn, and drinks provided by Bomb Lager.  Additional support has also been provided by Loci Architecture and gopro.
Young New York is supported by the Goodman Fellowship at Columbia University and Brooklyn Defender Services.
