“LETTERS FROM AMERICA” continues its UK invasion with an all-American Independence Day celebration on Wednesday, July 4 at Black Rat Gallery. Open to the public, the exhibition transforms the London tunnel into a bunker of America’s most wanted artists, showcasing new works from RISK, Ron English, SABER, and TrustoCorp. Gallerists Jan and Bruce Helford add, “Corey Helford Gallery is proud to be bringing U.S. artists to a UK project of this “Olympian” scale and finishing with a celebration of four of the top U.S. street and graffiti artists – RISK, Ron English, Saber and TrustoCorp – in a gallery that’s been home to some of the finest street artists in the world, Black Rat Gallery.”

The exhibition of paintings and sculptures will feature an original Bob’s Big Boy statue customized by RISK, as well as SABER’s famous flag series, which serves as a commentary about the National Healthcare System and his personal challenges with it. For the show, SABER will unveil first Union Flag piece, titled “The Flag Of The National Healthcare System.” “Quite literally, I paint for my life,” he says. “Every painting I touch, I try to envision my pieces on a travel into the future as a record of the great emotional value as well as artistic merit that can only be matched by someone living under such extreme conditions during these tumultuous times. I only hope that after I am gone, these pieces will be hung on the walls of a different era where we as nations care more about nurturing its citizens than perpetuating the system of profit over life.”

The opening reception for “LETTERS FROM AMERICA” at the London Pleasure Gardens is free and open to the public. Outdoor installations will be on view until December 2013. The opening reception at Black Rat Gallery is private and by invitation only. All of the artists will be in attendance on opening night, and the show runs through July 18, 2012.

Hungry for Sugar, Fat and Money!

U.K. born artist Jon Burgerman has risen to become a prominent figure in the recent boom of practitioners who traverse the disciplines of contemporary art, design, illustration and entrepreneurism. His award winning work can be seen globally from gallery and bedroom walls to cinema and iPhone screens. A sense of British self-deprecation, dry humour and modern-day anxiety imbues his work along with an enthusiasm for salad.

Four years ago Burgerman applied to tender for a job for ‘a large sporting event’ (one which he is not legally allowed to disclose). It involved the devising of a set of mascots. Having designed many variations of mascots, tweaking and adapting them to the feedback of the event organisers after many meetings, presentations and pitches spread over two years, Burgermans work had made it to the final two options. Excited and nervous about the possibility of having his characters chosen for the large sporting event a concern also loomed that the large sporting event would in fact own his work and exploit it for as much financial gain as possible. Whilst away in China, Burgerman received a phone call explaining that his characters had not be chosen.

To soften the blow of not having his art work grace the grand worldwide stage of a large sporting event he has now decided to create his own tiny, localised, sporting event in response, entitled The Hungry Games.

As well as devising a series of artworks, mascots and sundries for the exhibition, Burgerman has invented a collection of sporting activities. Much like the arts, new, young sporting events also need patrons, with sponsorship an integral part of the project. Each event will have its own local sponsor, who will also be represented in the exhibition. The opening night will feature a series of actions that require audience participation, such as The Soda Pop Race, Vegetable Toss Off, Cheese Grating Racing and more.

The artwork surrounding the exhibition will include a series of paintings relating to the events and sponsorships from the likes of The Empty Bottle, Very Best Vintage, Bite Cafe, Color Wheel Studio and more,  referencing popular sporting actions and slogans. Also featured will be merchandise, multiple cut outs and medals designed by the artist.

The Hungry Games, aims to satisfy the viewer in their desire for mascots, commercial tie-ins, collective experience and spectacle, whilst leaving them hungry for more.

The Inauguration will be held on Saturday July 21, 2012 at 6pm sharp with the help of our frineds at The Color Wheel Studio in Chicago’s Wicker Park.  The Opening Ceremonies will continue until 10:00pm and the show will be on display through August at Pawn Works 1050 N. Damen Ave. Chicago, Illinois.

Bob Bar Presents: Pamela Castro AKA Anarkia Boladona “The Myth” A Solo Exhibition (Manhattan, NYC)

Inspired by the classic existentialist text The Second Sex (Le Deuxième Sexe) by French feminist scholar Simone de Beauvoir, Brazilian graffiti artist Anarkia Boladona’s exhibition The Myth interprets the various stereotypes mythologizing the female “other.” Focusing on the relationship between sexuality and gender, Boladona depicts recognizable religious figures (such as Eve), and then counters, complicates, and compliments them with empowering mythological figures of her own creation.

Panmela Castro is an activist artist whose social policy work, primarily focused on gender equality, provides the core inspiration for the content of her provocative paintings. With her work, Castro challenges patriarchal notions of public space as related to sexism, sexuality, subjectivity, and power relations. She has a BFA from the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and is currently in the Master of Arts program at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. She has received numerous awards including the Hutúz Prize for Graffiti Artist of the Decade, the 2012 Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation Award for Extraordinary Women, and the Vital Voices Global Leadership Human Rights Award. In 2012, Newsweek Magazine nominated Panmela, alongisde Brazilian President Dilma Roussef, as one of the “150 Women Shaking the World.” With years of experience writing graffiti and fighting for women’s rights, Panmela has been invited to paint in cities across the globe, including but not limited to: Berlin, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Paris, Prague, New York, and Toronto. www.panmelacastro.com. Dark Lights continues Stormie’s exploration into the characteristics that define humanity.

By shining a light into the darkness his work seeks to uncover what lies beneath in each of us.

Dark Lights explores the idea that a “villain” in society can still possess a captivating human quality when the light is shined within them.

By contrast a pillar of society exposes their “dark side” as they stand still under the light.

About the Artist

Stormie mills began painting in 1984. the first mark on the world began on a dark wet night that fuelled the relentless all consuming passion to create an image.

More than 25 years later stormie has more than made a mark in the global context as a highly collectable artist that has seen him travel around the world producing large scale commissions and transforming the concrete landscape in barcelona, greece, london, los angeles, miami, melbourne, new york, perth, sydney and tokyo.

Using a combination of acrylic, dirt, spray paint and graffiti remover and working predominately in a palate of black, grey, silver and white. stormie has crossed many boundaries of painting from, 40 metre scaffold facades on buildings, to inside discarded draws, to the tiniest detail on a fallen leaf and to the finest of belgium linen.

In between painting stormie dedicates time to giving back to the community often speaking to students in schools as well as presenting to formal forums. in may, stormie was invited to present at the agideas international design week, one of the largest and most prestigious design festivals in the world.

Stormie’s work reflects a deeply personal expression of emotion motivated by the notion of isolation. each work is a communication of the human condition engaging the viewer to explore beyond the image on the surface. each work stormie creates is compelling and continues to attract collectors for his unique statements on life.

Almost a year after we first showed with London based Remi Rough we invite him back to unveil his only UK solo show of 2012 at Newcastle’s Unit 44. It’s been an incredibly busy twelve months for the London based artist and it’s been a pleasure to witness new objectives and ideas formulate for his upcoming show How to Use Colour and Manipulate People opening June 22. We also receive Remi on the back of possibly the most visually significant project in our nations capital transforming a Boutique, London hotel into a stunning canvas with four of his fellow Agents of Change.

There are few artists whose recent works could be described as “painting visual haikus” without the reader needing to roll their eyes, but Remi Rough is one of them. South London born and bred, Remi has been breaking boundaries for over 27 years. Transcending the traditional and somewhat idealised vision of a graffiti writer, he is passionate and unforgiving in his creative progression.

He moved from the streets to the galleries with his debut art show in 1989 and has since gone on to exhibit in London, Paris, Perth, Tokyo, Santander, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Berlin, Ibiza and more cities dotted around the globe. He also took part in New York’s Underbelly Project in 2010. As Arrested Motion wrote: “Remi is that rare breed of artist whose work you can equally enjoy in an outdoor setting and also in a gallery/home without it feeling awkward and out of context.”

His work has also appeared in countless books and was featured in the award winning ‘Ghost Village Project’. Remi was invited to speak in front of a sell- out auditorium at the Tate Modern, as part of its Street Art exhibition in 2008 and in 2009 he published his first book “Lost Colours and Alibis.”

His most recent works are a big departure from his earlier paintings. The sculptural work is reminiscent of Serra, his lines and forced shapes brought to life as 3D objects in both wood and clay. ascending to a third dimension seems almost obvious with Remi’s work. Whilst Remi’s new paintings are more referential to his earlier work from 5 years ago but using bitumen and matt emulsions and still maintaining a tight narrative of tension which is constant in his work. These are abstract works, yet they are firmly rooted in reality. “These new works made perfect sense to me… The idea of taking something into a third dimension is so obvious, yet so hard to achieve. The movements and lines within graffiti have blurred so much in the past decade I felt I needed to change the way I paint to adapt to change, I still feel that way everyday,” says Remi Rough.

The Private View will take place June 22 at 6:30pm at Unit 44 in Hoults Yard.

Sound the alarms!  Teddy Troopers are invading our shores!  They are storming the beaches and parachuting down from the sky, driven by their insatiable appetite for world domination.  Wearing oversized helmets for protection, these restless little bears are descending upon the streets of NYC and will stop at nothing until their goal is accomplished.  Is there anyone who can save us from this occupying force?  Luckily, mankind has a champion who can turn the tide and bring us salvation through his astute knowledge of the Teddy Trooper.  Mighty Tanaka is pleased to bring you The One Man Army, featuring the explosive artwork of Flying Fortress.  Armed only with a paintbrush and spray can, he is this nations best line of defense.

 

The One Man Army heralds the arrival of Flying Fortress, in his first solo show in New York City.  He has been consistently progressing his art form in both galleries and city streets throughout the world, building a strong international following in the process.  Based in Hamburg, Germany, this Street Art legend has been active for well over a decade and his unique “Teddy Trooper” iconography can be seen on nearly every continent.

 

Through a variety of interpretations, Flying Fortress provides fun and exciting artwork that anyone can enjoy.  He will be showing both original artwork as well as limited run prints.  The One Man Army has something for everybody.

20:12 is a project by London-based artist #codefc that has developed over the past couple of years as a humorous social commentary on the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics.

Using stencil interventions onto London city landscapes, #codefc presents athletes’ imagery in all their splendour and vigour, performing the Olympian feats for which they are known against a backdrop of reconfigured and stretched Olympic rings, their faces replaced with cameras and camcorders – the artist’s signature mark.

20:12 places the glorification of the Olympic Games brand and  the notion of “sportivity” well and truly within London’s urban context, which is in itself potent with particular socio-political circumstances and challenges faced as hosting city. In addition to highlighting these conditions, 20:12 looks at the commercial and creative cultures and economies created through the Olympics machine, in the form of merchandise, official and unofficial artistic outputs, and branding exercises.

20:12 has seen different incarnations at important street art hubs in London, including Cordy House and Red Gallery in Shoredich, the Westway in Ladbroke Grove, and South Bank. The project will culminate in an exhibition at Curious Duke Gallery during June 2012.
